Hangzhou

Today’s bus ride was over 2 hours but we finally arrive around 9:30am. We visit the West Lake area and the Su Causeway.

There were tons of other tourists like us as well, they came toward us like a swarm.

There were peacocks just randomly grazing and sitting around:

We took a little tour on the lake.

They next took us to a green tea museum and grower. They offered us some of their mid-grade tea where you can eat the leaves and gave us some information about tea (which I unfortunately could not understand much).

We stopped by the Lingyin Temple (Flying Peak) and took this interesting picture:

Does it look like the Chinese word for “heart”? Our heads are supposed to be the 2 dots on top.

The famous laughing Buddha:

We then stopped by another silk factory, this one was The Center for Hangzhou Silk Showing & Shopping. We learned here that the double pupas are used for the inside of blankets because the threads are intertwined and can’t be unraveled. The single pupas are used to make the thread because it can be unraveled by machine.

The left are “double” and the right are “single”.

The place also did a fashion show for the customers to see their clothes. It was rather corny but they do make nice things.

We headed back to Shanghai and Ron and I had a craving for hot pot. We found ths place called “789”. Each person has their own pot with their own soup and you order shared additives. The best thing about this place was the choice of sauces that you make yourself… it was a bit overwhelming and we had a hard time choosing.

The only shady thing about this restaurant was that we tried to use a credit card to pay and they told us it was rejected so we ended up paying cash instead. When we got back to the apartment, we called our credit card company to find out what was wrong and they said there wasn’t anyhthing wrong because the restaurant requested authorization three times and received authorization each time but the restaurant chose not to actually post the charges! Sounded very shady to me… they probably just wanted the cash instead so they could likely not report it… the food was pretty good and filling but I don’t know if I’d recommend the place if they have business practices like that.

Tomorrow we leave for Macau!

Suzhou

We met up with our bus at 7am and headed to Suzhou, it was a little less than two hour ride. Our first stop in Suzhou was the Humble Administrator’s Garden which is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. It was a very peaceful place with lots of water features.

I forget what Ron was trying to do…

It was really chilly but really pretty next to the bamboo…

Our next stop was the silk mill. The first thing we remembered is when we were in Korea and ate those silk worm pupa, we saw them in the case about the life cycle of a silk worm. In the middle is the pupa:

As I mentioned, it was really cold so we bought some hot soy milk from a street vendor. The guy poured it into a long plastic bag so was kind of slippery like those toys that are filled with gel and if you squeeze them, they jump out of your hand. Anyways, it was a great 1RMB handwarmer but it tasted terrible, bitter and burnt even with sugar in it.

Next stop was Hanshan Temple where we signed the New Year’s wall scroll.

We also were lucky because Jan 1st is the only day where you can ring the large bell they have in the temple. You’re supposed to ring it 3 times for good luck and prosperity. You pay a nominal fee to do it and it’s worth it, it sounds really cool.

We then stopped at the next pagoda on Tiger Hill but we did not go in, just took a picture:

Our last temple stop was the North Pagoda which is 9 stories tall. Jan 1st is the only day you’re allowed to climb all the way to the 9th level. The rest of the year you can only climb to the 6th level.

We had some free time after the last temple and explored the outskirts of the temple area. It was very similar to Nanjing Rd with all lots of shops and eating places. We only had about an hour before we had to head back to Shanghai.

We arrived back in Shanghai around 6:30pm and had a quick dinner before heading to bed early because tomorrow’s tour also starts at 7am.

Blog has been down….

Our blog has been down for the last few days because we forgot to renew our account… but now everything seems to be working again so I’ll be back to updating soon. We’re in Shanghai right now and will be heading to Macau in a few days before going back to Singapore.

I’ll update this post when I update with new posts.

Happy New Year!!!

New Year’s Eve at XinTianDi and Nanjing Rd

We met up with Ron’s INSEAD classmate Harry, who is from Shanghai, and Harry’s friend Chris. We had lunch at a restaurant called Butterfly Garden to introduce us to some Shanghainese food. Please see our album for more photos but my favorite dish was a sweet and warm dish of red dates stuffed with sweet rice cake:

After lunch we visited Chris’ store called Yogo Juice. The store was right near the restaurant and she treated us to some drinks. The serve fresh fruit yogurt smoothies similar to Jamba Juice in the US. I tried a hot drink made of a fruit called “acai“, pronounced “a-sah-ee”, made into a latte. It’s hard to describe the flavor because I think the soy milk kind of took over the flavor but it was a bit nutty. It is supposed to have tons of antioxidants.

Afterwards, Ron and I went walking around XinTianDi. There was a bit NYE concert featuring the Taiwanese girl group “S.H.E.” but unfortunately tickets couldn’t be purchased. Tickets could only be earned by spending over $500 in the mall and that ended a few weeks back. So unfortunately we missed out.

We did manage to book tours to Suzhou and Hangzhou for the next two days. The tourist information centers are actually pretty useful. We were a bit shocked though that the English speaking tours were THREE times more expensive than the Chinese speaking tours. Since we’re on a budget, we chose the Chinese speaking tours and Ron promised to translate for me.

We tried to find somewhere to go to watch fireworks or something so we tried Nanjing Rd but there were no fireworks, just another concert. Since it was getting close to midnight and we were pretty pooped out, we ended up taking a taxi home and watching fireworks inside the taxi cab! When we got back to the apartment, we watched the rest of the fireworks on TV.

We did have a midnight snack at McDonald’s where they have a taro pie (instead of an apple pie). It was yummy!

We have to meet the bus at 7am for our tour so I leave you with the slideshow of our photos for the day:

YuYuan Gardens

We headed out to YuYuan Gardens and the surrounding “Old Town” so shop, eat, and walk around. We entered the gardens a little late, around 3:30pm or so and they close parts of the garden around 5pm so we didn’t get to see everything. We had some fun making some funny poses 🙂

There’s no window pane here but hope you get a laugh:

Ron vase:

We also ended up eating quite a lot during the day. It was endless snacking but oh so good.

Soup dumpling (you drink the soup with the straw then eat the dumpling afterwards):

Stinky tofu:

Black corn:

Takoyaki (octopus balls):

Roasted squab:

More stinky tofu and xiao long bao:

Black sesame rice ball soup:

Fresh fruits coated in sugar and sesame seeds:

After more dumpling soup, today with noodles, for dinner, we watched “I Am Legend” which we bought for 5RMB from a street vendor today.
