Zanze’s Cheesecake

Ron picked up a cheesecake from Zanze’s for us to try since he happened to be in area. He heard that they sell the best cheesecake in San Francisco and is very unique.

It’s boxed up with a bit of fishing line to portion out the cake (top left corner).

He ordered the plain but apparently they also have flavored cheesecakes, blueberry will be my next pick.

The cake was very light and airy, a very light graham cracker dusting on top. I ate two small slices and I was stuffed, it’s deceiving how filling it is.

Kara’s Cupcakes

I was in the Marina with some friends for The Warehouse Sale, I was able to find some good deals on dresses for $20 each. You really have to be in the mood to dig around and find your size and also the accept some flaws on the dresses like stains or threads. But overall, it was a good shopping day.

Since we were in the area, we stopped by Kara’s Cupcakes since I’ve heard such rave reviews but have never had one myself. They all ended up sounding so yummy that I got five of them.

From top left to right: passion fruit, strawberry cream, meyer lemon
From bottom left to right: banana caramel, peanut butter milk chocolate ganache

I liked them, the filled ones are better. But there really is a lot of frosting on the cupcake, I wanted a bit more cake to go with the frosting. I still ended up eating all the frosting since I didn’t want it to go to waste, for $3.25 each, the frosting is like $1.

Gitane Restaurant

Had a lovely dinner with Shirley & Patrick at Gitane Restaurant. The restaurant is hidden away and may be a bit difficult to find but it’s worth the search. It was our first time trying cuisine from the Basque region.

For appetizers, we tried the Bastilla: sweet & savory, crispy pastry with duck, chicken, raisins, almonds, moroccan spices, orange gastrique.

and the bacon bon bons: sauteed prunes stuffed with goat cheese, wrapped in smoked bacon, anise and cinnamon port sauce. Highly recommended, not just for the concept, but also for the flavor (especially if you like prunes and goat cheese).

For drinks, I tried the Gitane Cobbler: amontillado sherry, triple sec,
lemon juice, diced peach & apricot, cinnamon. Really tasted like a stone fruit cobbler, that little bit of cinnamon made it something special.

We ordered three entrees to share, first, the sea bass: pan seared, arroz negro, grilled asparagus, parmesan tuile, romesco sauce

Next, Cataplana: portuguese fish stew, monkfish, baynes clams, hot chorizo, fingerling potatoes, bell pepper, lobster bisque

Lastly, Cordero: pan roasted domestic lamb noisette, rolled & stuffed with herb mousseline, tapenade, pisto manchego, baked polenta

Side order of choux: sauteed savoy cabbage julienne & smoked bacon

We shared two desserts, pan con chocolate: toasted baguette, spanish olive oil, vairhona chocolate ganache, vanilla fleur de sel. The olive oil gave it an interesting twist and the salt made it extra sweet.

Quatre Quart: tempranillo braised seckel pear, carmelized vanilla pound cake, carmelized almonds, citrus whipped cream. Yummy pears and cake and everything!

Looking forward to our next dinner in a few months!

Keeping Warm

Unfortunately I think I caught some bug, around 4:30pm I suddenly felt really weak and hot. I felt like I had a fever but didn’t actually take my temperature. To be safe, I went to bed, took some ibuprofen for the sudden aches and flushing.

After a long nap, I woke to Ron taking some photos…

I wonder if the kitties sensed that I was going from feverish to chilly so they (at least the boys) decided to surround me.

Their eyes were following Ron as he walked around to wake me up, maybe a bit protective and also they didn’t want to wake up either 😛

That was a good nap. I felt a lot better but still had a headache.

Weekend BBQ

We had a bit of a last minute BBQ at Ron’s parents’ house in Millbrae. The family wasn’t home though, they all already had other plans so we had their use of their entire house.

It was a chilly day but we made the best of it. Thanks to Ron for doing the majority of the cooking while most of us stayed warm inside eating and playing Wii.
