My first lecture at NUS

I had quite the exhausting day today… I stayed up late this whole weekend working on my lecture for the 2nd year pharmacy students. I was a bit stressed but I’m not sure why. Perhaps because it’s been more than 2 years since I’ve given a full length lecture. It was a very busy morning at the Cancer Centre so I didn’t get to leave until 1:30pm although my lecture was at 2pm. So I didn’t have a chance to go have lunch then had to hike about 15 minutes to NUS to meet up with Joyce before heading to the Lecture Theater (LT). After my 1hr 45min lecture, I had to hike back to NUH to go back to work. It was still quite busy so I didn’t get to leave until after 6pm to head to my Chinese class. All the buses to the MRT were full so I didn’t get to the MRT until after 6:30pm and got to my class exactly at 7:00pm. I had class until 9:30pm then headed home.

What a long day…

CNY Party at my workplace

It was such a busy day today… even though we did all we could to do things efficiently so that we could head to our CNY party at work. The pharmacy organized a big party at the Staff Club at NUH, which is basically a workout and rest room for the staff, it even has motorized massage chairs to relax in. The party today had lion dances, food, games, singing, and prizes. Ron and I only stayed for a bit of it though because I was really tired.

We all received red pocket when we entered and each had a number for the lucky draw. I gave all of mine to our pharmacy assistants and technicians to see if they’d be lucky.

Long Beach Revisited

This week was Ron’s school’s “Dragon Week” so they’ve been having events most days: movies, lectures, parties, lunches, dinner, etc. Tonight (unfortunately scheduled for V-day) was dinner at Long Beach Seafood at IMM. We had dinner here the first month we arrived in Singapore but this time it was free 🙂

Yummy chili crab again among other things… we of course again ate too much but I think it was a hit with all the students who are only here for a short period of time.

Sahara at Boat Quay and Max Brenner Chocolate Bar at Esplanade

Today Joyce and I spent the day shopping on Orchard Rd before heading to Boat Quay to meet up with Ron, Timo, and Elina for dinner. This is the first time I’ve eaten at Boat Quay but I’ve walked by there before and I don’t like the people who stand outside their restaurants trying to convince you to come inside. They usually sort of get in your way and shove menus into your face to draw you inside… but Ron wanted to go out there to eat since they were going to check out some bars later on.

We had dinner at Sahara, North Indian and Arabian Cuisine.

Afterwards Joyce and I went to River Hongbao again to check out the fireworks but there were none… either we missed it already or there wasn’t any planned.

But then we treated ourselves to some ice cold chocolate shakes at Max Brenner Chocolate Bar. A couple jumped in front of us to get a table which was a table shared by two other couples… we waited a bit longer but ended up getting our own table only for the two of us. Joyce had a strawberry and dark chocolate shake and I had a milk chocolate banana shake. The strawberry flavor was quite light though, the original version is supposed to be white chocolate (which isn’t really chocolate). But the banana one was pretty nice.

I look forward to going back there again to try their famous fondue.

Lemongrass Thai Restaurant at the Heeren

The second day of the CNY holiday… again nothing much to do because things are still mostly closed but the movie theaters were open so we went to see the movie called CJ7. It’s a great movie for kids and adults, at least I was laughing and having a good time watching the movie.

Afterwards we went for coffee at the The Coffee Club before exploring Orchard Rd to see if any places were open to shop. The big department stores Takashimaya, Isetan, Tang’s, etc were all closed. Quite disappointing. So we finally decided to go find something to eat.

We ended up at the Heeren Shops at the Lemongrass Thai Restaurant. The place was pretty empty so it was easy to get a large table. We thought it’d be a good deal too since they had a big sign out front where it said we’d get 15% off for using our American Express card.

I enjoyed the meal, especially the pomelo salad. But when we got the bill and tried to pay for Amex, that’s when we got upset. As I mentioned, there was a huge sign out front stating that you get a discount if you use your Amex. The waitstaff told us, “oh… it doesn’t apply on public holidays and today is a public holiday”. So we asked them why they have a huge sign out front… they just looked blankly at us with no answer.

We paid the bill and I don’t think we’ll ever go there again.
