Cute Cats

Sorry that I’ve been lazy about posting lately. I’ve actually been having some problems with my iBook lately, just with the iPhoto program… whenever I try to download my pictures from my SD card, it locks up so I get frustrated and give up for the day.

So I will update soon, but for now watch this really cute YouTube video of sleeping kitties. It’s just too cute. I really miss my babies.

Raining… not only water, but cabinets…

It’s been really wet in Singapore the past few days.. actually almost the past week. Every day it rains either a tiny bit or a lot!

But that’s not the only thing that’s “fallen” this week. Yesterday we had an incident at work where suddenly a huge cabinet came crashing down. The cabinet was maybe 5 ft x 5 ft with cubby holes and a few cabinet doors. It was used to hold binders of files and some books. Suddenly you heard a few cracks, a crash, then half the lights went off. One of our poor technicians was injured as it hit her elbow and hip. She was cornered between a counter and the fallen cabinet. She could do nothing except try to protect herself. She suffered a few abrasions and was sent home for a few days to recuperate. The fallen cabinet dented the computer CPU, ripped out the light switch, broke a few letter trays, and scattered all the binders, papers, and books all over the floor. It disrupted our work for quite a while.

However, the response from the hospital was quite good. Within 10 minutes of it falling, someone from (I think) engineering came by to see what happened and right away called other people to help out and survey the incident. Our “big” boss also came by to check out the scene. I only had a chance to help to clean up a bit and walked our technician to the Emergency Dept to get checked out. By the time I got back, the cabinet was removed and they were taking photos of the wall where the cabinet has been nailed in place. Apparently it was not so secure because there weren’t that many nails.

It was a rather scary incident as we have quite a few cabinets that are mounted on the wall but they will also be looked at to make sure they are secure. Our technician stayed home to rest today but should be back at work tomorrow. I take that as a good sign that she wasn’t seriously injured as it could have been much worse. Anyone of us could have been standing right in front of that cabinet and who knows how we would’ve reacted…

The Marmalade Pantry

Today we had a girls day out although it was almost ruined by the rain. But we still managed to have a good day and enjoyed ourselves. Singapore is designed really well for shoppers on Orchard Rd, they have many underground passage ways so that when it rains, you don’t have to walk outside, you just follow the maze underground to different shopping centers 😛

We had Sunday brunch at a place called The Marmalade Pantry. We unfortunately did not get to enjoy any of their baked goods because we were rushed to go see a movie… but that just means we’ll have to go back there again. They have yummy looking breads, cookies, and cupcakes. Our brunch was pretty tasty.

Our refreshing drinks: mango lassi, strawberry-banana smoothie, and apple lime ginger juice.

French toast with figs and carmelized apples (the forgot the honey ice cream I just realized…).

Joyce with her vegetarian fritatta.

Pan seared tuna nicoise.

Getting ready to enjoy our Sunday brunch.

After brunch we went to see the Disney movie “Enchanted”. The movie was so hilarious, a bit corny, but lovely. I’d watch it again. It’s a real “chick-flick” and it’s a real “feel-good” movie.

I spent the rest of the afternoon shopping for gifts (for others and myself :P). Joyce and Siew Woon had a spa appointment from 4-6pm. They sounded like they had a relaxing time so I will join them next month.

We had fish and chips for dinner at Takashimaya (at the food court on Basement Level 2) before heading home. The rain has slowed to a drizzle but it was still quite wet so it was almost impossible to catch a taxi. Joyce and I ended up taking the MRT and going 2 stops away in order to catch a taxi together. We live in the same direction so it saves a bit of money.

It’s tiring walking around and shopping. I hope tomorrow at work won’t be too crazy.

Por Kee Eating House

After a whole day of watching soap operas and Ron spending a whole day on studying, we went out to eat at a place called Por Kee Eating House 1996. It has an indoor air conditioned part and also an outside eating area. I was glad our friend reserved spots indoor. They had some unique and quite tasty dishes.

We had “appetizers” or roasted peanuts and pickled spicy cucumbers with pineapples. Plus of course the standard sauces of chili sauce and picked jalepenos.

First entree, the champagne spareribs. They were sweet, sour, and salty all at the same time and the meat was very tender.

Spinach with mushrooms.

Thai fish soup.

Bean curd with vegetables.

Some sort of local vegetable.

Roasted chicken.

Cereal shrimp (the fried batter was sweet and salty).

Fried seafood sticks.

Cheering to a good meal…

and unfortunately back to studying for everyone. Finals are starting at the end of the week but then we’ll be off for winter vacation for almost 3 weeks… can’t wait!

Famous Islamic Restaurant

After a long week of work and a long week of classes, we were looking forward to attending Friday Foody at the Famous Islamic Restaurant near Arab Street.

We took the MRT to Bugis and walked to the restaurant on North Bridge Road. Not many shops were open at this hour and the restaurant itself was quite empty.

They served us these appetizers of chip-like things, lentils, and cucumber appetizers:

We tried 2 different types of mutton (lamb) sides which were very good. The meat was very tender, no “game-y” taste, and very buttery.

The main course was chicken briyani, also available instead with mutton or fish.

It was quite a feast… with way too much rice for me, I could not finish it all. But after eating those carbohydrates, I was even more tired than I started out so we headed home.

It’s been nice to have a relaxing evening at home, spending some time with our flatmates. Exams are coming up for them so they’re going to be stressed out soon.

I’ve started watching the Korean drama “Jewel in the Palace” and I’m not quite hooked yet but it is very suspenseful…
