Brother’s Korean BBQ

We enjoyed some good Korean BBQ with our friends Susan & Ken. We
attempted to go to Brother’s Korean BBQ on Geary Blvd. The original
restaurant is #4128 and it was packed! There were groups waiting
inside and waiting outside. By the whiteboard where you sign your
name and the give the number of your party is this small white sign
that says they have a restaurant down the street at #4014 if you want
faster service with the same great food.

We smelled totally like charcoal and meat when we left the restaurant
but we left happily stuffed.

We ordered the soft tofu soup. It wasn’t very spicy but had lots of
ingredients and a good soup stock. Sorry the photo is a bit fuzzy,
it’s my cell phone camera.

We also had the kalbi and bulgogi. The guys helped to cook a yummy meal.

They threw in a complimentary plate of spicy squid. This was pretty
good, sweet and spicy.

We had soju and beer to top off our meal, the best accompaniments to our meal.

Tiffany & Alex’s wedding at Crow Canyon Country Club

We made it just back just in time to be part of Tiffany & Alex’s wedding. This morning we were to arrive at Tiffany’s mom’s house in Concord by 1pm so I was frantically trying to figure out what to do with my hair. Ron helped me with my hair and I think he did a pretty good job. He’s for hire if you need help 🙂 Check out the photo below.

After we arrived at her mom’s house, before the guys could come in, we made the guys do some door opening games. Alex had to announce what he loved about Tiff, transfer 8 M&M’s in 8 seconds from one bowl to another with chopsticks, and sing a song to Tiffany’s satisfaction… they sang “Say a Little Prayer” by Dionne Warwick… “the moment I wake up, before I put on my makeup”… can you imagine 6 guys singing at the top of their lungs??

They had a tea ceremony with the family before heading to take some photos at the Bollinger waterfall and then heading to the country club.

The wedding ceremony went off smoothly, none of us tripping or falling on the long walkway. Then we headed into the reception. Tiffany warned us the day before that each bridesmaid/groomsmen couple had to do a little dance to a random song as we entered the dining room. It was a bit embarrassing but my partner Patrick suggested we do “the robot” which I don’t think I did very well but at least could fake. Man, so nervous!

It was a fun reception but we were still a bit hungry, so afterwards, a bunch of us had In-n-Out for a snack before calling a night.

Congratulations Tiffany & Alex!

Kincaid’s Bayhouse

Tonight we went out with Ron’s family for a dinner to celebrate all our birthdays for the next three months. Since everyone will be busy, they wanted to have one big dinner in case we didn’t have time to celebrate during our actual birthdays.

The rib eye is better than the prime rib. The crab cakes were really good. The drinks were unique, I had a lavender martini!

Move-in Day and In-n-Out

So today we moved into our new SF apartment but the first thing we had to do was to empty our PODS storage unit in Vallejo. PODS is an excellent concept where they drop off a container at your doorstep, you fill it up on your own time, then you schedule them to pick it up and they store it for you while you pay a monthly fee.

Our problem with them came when we wanted to have the POD deliver to South San Francisco so that we could unload it into Ron’s dad’s warehouse. From Vallejo to South SF is about 40 miles. BUT, the PODS customer service quoted the cost to be almost $1000 because they would have to transfer the POD from the East Bay franchise to the South Bay franchise and that involves a fee which they pass onto the customer! The POD would have to be delivered to Hayward first then delivered to South SF. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? That adds another 20 miles at least.

So to save our sanity, we rented a huge Penske truck and went to Vallejo to unload the unit ourselves and although it involved more time on our part, it cost only about $200! It makes no sense that they pass on the franchise transfer cost to the consumer. They make it sound so simple on their website and ads to use their service and it turns out to not be so easy afterall…

These are pictures of our apartment while it’s still empty.

We had dinner at In-N-Out Burger after the tiring day of moving. Try “animal style” fries!

San Tung and Peasant Pies

We’ve been craving San Tung dried fried chicken since we’ve been back. The sauce is sweet and spicy and the chicken is cooked extra crispy. They also use the sauce to make dried fried green beans with preserved vegetables. These are my two favorite dishes. San Tung was closed on Wednesday when we tried to go there so we decided to treat Ron’s family to the delicious chicken.

They were peeling the green beans while we waited for our take-out. It was a huge mound.

We ordered four portions of the dried fried chicken wings, with sauce on the side so the skin doesn’t get soggy.

The only problem with take home sauce is that not all the sugar quite incorporates so it’s a bit sandy.

Next to San Tung is a place called Peasant Pies. They have savory pies and sweet ones. I opted for a sweet one, the blueberry pear pie. It wasn’t very sweet which let the flavors of the fruits shine through. The staff recommended the savory over the sweet so I’m looking forward to tasting those in the future.
