Wearing your baby

Day 80

I love watching Simon when he is on his tummy.  He makes funny faces, smiles, laughs, moves his arms, kicks his legs, and just seems like he is having so much fun.  Although as he gets tired, his head slowly droops and he gets a bit cranky.  We’re glad that his head slowly droops rather than falling like a rock, we’re always afraid he will bonk his head.

Also he really talks up a storm while watching his mobile.  Before he would just calmly look at it and usually turn his head away after a few seconds.  Now he often seems like in a trance then will start talking really loudly to it or to himself (we’re not sure which).  It startled us the first time since we though he was yelling and crying but he was just having a jolly good time.

While I was taking a nap, Ron was taking care of Simon and I woke from my nap to find Ron sporting a new accessory:

Since Ron needed his hands free to work on the computer and prepare dinner, he strapped Simon to his chest with the Baby Bjorn.  Apparently Simon had been fussing and didn’t want to lie down and play on his playmat so this was the solution.  It seems like Simon’s neck is strong enough to support his head so we can “wear” him like this now.  We are going to work on his back now to get him to sit up by himself.

Macy’s Sex in the City Event

Day 79

Gap has these really cute super hero clothes for kids made by Junk Food Clothing.  Recently I bought this one for Simon.  It is still a little big (6-12 month size) so he’ll grow into it but I just thought it was very cute.

We hadn’t been out all day so in the evening time when my friend Kathleen invited us to meet for dinner, we decided to head out and get some fresh air.  There was also a Sex in the City event going on at Macy’s Union Square so we decided to drop by there too.  At the event, they were giving away a free scarf, free cocktails, mini cupcakes, appetizers, express manicures, and much more.

The host of the event was Nick Verreos, a contestant from Season 2 of Project Runway.  Simon’s first time meeting a celebrity!  We had our photo taken with him:

Simon got a whiff of my grapefruit cosmopolitan.  He looks a little scared by it.

Simon was probably a little overwhelmed by all the noise and lights but he was a good boy and didn’t get cranky at all.  Once we sat down to dinner at Burger Bar, he quickly fell asleep and stayed asleep until we got home.

Can baby get sick from breastmilk if mom is sick?

Day 78

I worried about this last night as I suddenly started to have chills and feel feverish.  Could Simon get sick from breastfeeding if I was sick?  I had been feeding him all day already so probably already exposed him.  I found an answer that calmed me at Kellymom.com:

The best thing you can do for your baby when you’re sick is to continue to breastfeed. When you have a contagious illness such as a cold, flu, or other mild virus, your baby was exposed to the illness before you even knew you were sick. Your milk will not transmit your illness to baby, but it does have antibodies in it that are specific to your illness (plus anything else you or baby have been exposed to) – they’ll help prevent baby from getting sick, or if he does get sick, he’ll probably not be as sick as you.”

The website has answers to a lot of different questions regarding breastfeeding and parenting.  It seems like everything is referenced using evidence-based medicine.  I’m glad to have found this resource as it is well organized so it is easier to find information.

I took some more vitamin C with zinc, a multivitamin, ibuprofen (for the aches and feverish feeling), had a warm bath, and drank plenty of hot honey tea and water.  It hurt to swallow.  Although this morning, I woke up and my throat felt so much better and the chills and feverish feeling were gone.  So I guess all those things worked to keep the cold at bay.  I’m still a little bit worried that my poor baby might get sick but we’ll be keeping a close watch on him.

Simon’s neck is getting really strong now.  He will put his head down when he’s finally tired out and will start to fuss so we know it’s probably time for him to take a nap.  We are trying to get him to work on strengthening his arm muscles.  A friend suggested that when we place him on his tummy and place his arms in the correct position then make him look up at us.  It seems to be working as now he’s starting to push up a bit on his arms. (Thanks Mike for the tip!)  He still seems to favor kicking his legs though.  Grandma Chung thinks he will be able to walk at 5 months.  Now wouldn’t that be amazing? (but doubtful…)

Oh, and the answer to yesterday’s questions, he slept 4 hours then 2 hours then 3 hours, that made through to 6:30am this morning.  So his duration of sleep is lengthening… but not consistently.

The eyes have it!

Day 77

I bought Simon this outfit from American Apparel.  Sometimes pants get in the way when changing Simon’s diaper but it’s been cold lately and I don’t want his chubby little legs to get cold.  I’m not sure what he thinks of it though since it can be kind of restricting but it did keep his legs warm.  He still had to wear socks to keep his feet warm though.

The weather was nice in the afternoon so we went for our walk.  We headed toward downtown and ended up at the Westfield San Francisco Centre on the Bloomingdale’s side.  We stopped to rest for a bit on the couches underneath the dome.

Simon loved to look up and check out the light coming through the glass.  You can see the reflection of the dome in his eyes.

We were out for over 2 hours, walking about 2 miles.  By the time we reached the 2 blocks of incline to our apartment, my calves were protesting.  I may have overdone it with the walking in the Skechers Shape-Ups.  It also doesn’t help that I started this morning with a bit of a sore throat and as we were going home, it started to get cold and a bit misty.  I’ve been taking Redoxon (vitamin C with zinc) all day which usually helps to prevent a mild cold from becoming a full-blown cold.

Simon did not want to go to bed this evening since he took a nap for 2 hours (1 hour before our walk and 1 hour during) so was wide awake.  We decided to give him a bath to see if that would soothe him and also give him a bit of a work-out with some tummy time.  It seems like his arms are getting stronger and so is his back.  He seems to be able to keep up straight while leaning on Ron.  His posture is better than mine.

He’s getting a chubby little belly!  He finally fell asleep at 9pm… the question always is: how long will he sleep tonight?

Why do you keep taking my picture?

Day 76

Today since it was a rainy day in SF, Spidey-baby had a quiet day.  We basically stayed in and we tried our best to entertain each other.  In this photo, it would seem like Simon is getting tired of having his picture taken.

Hoping for better weather so we can continue our afternoon walks.
