Father’s Day

Day 110

For Father’s Day we had a very fussy Simon on our hands. We went to dim sum with my parents and Simon cried about 75% of the time. He didn’t have a good nap in the morning and only a short one on the car ride to the restaurant. It wad really loud outside the restaurant because they were having some performances for Father’s Day and inside was the loud din of everyone’s voices so he couldn’t fall asleep.  I ended up having to walk and bounce him around outside the restaurant to help him to fall asleep.  As I transferred him into Ron’s arms, he almost woke up then quickly fell back asleep once he realized who was holding him.  Unfortunately, when one of my parents tried to hold him, Simon would start crying again.  I think he realized it wasn’t Ron or me and wasn’t very happy about it.  Since I was sitting next to my mom during lunchtime, she helped to feed me some food, just like when I was a baby… He wasn’t that cooperative at my parents’ house either, not sure why he was so fussy today.  Part of it may be that he had a pretty bad diaper rash the last few days.  His poor little butt was inflamed and red but as soon as we used bacitracin and some zinc oxide ointment for one day, it was tons better and he only had a little chaffed spot remaining.  He had been whimpering with diaper changes two days ago but not at all this morning… so not sure what was up with him today.  We just feel so sad that we can’t figure out what he wants when he is crying so loudly.

Once it was afternoon though and we arrived home, he seemed back to his normal self.  He was sporting this new CAL onesie that he got as a gift at his party last month.  Thank you to Leslie for the cute onesie.  I think I need to go get Ron a CAL Rugby shirt too so they can match… and I can get myself one too so we can all match!  Haha… maybe too nerdy? 😛

Simon decided he wanted to nap on his side… maybe he’s becoming like me, I like to nap almost on my stomach but not quite.  While I was pregnant, my belly was in the way so I had to get used to sleeping on my side so it feels so good now to be able to sleep on my stomach again.  Although my mom said I hated to sleep on my stomach as a baby, I would only be happy on my back.  The thing I don’t get with Simon though is that he really likes to arch his back and it seems like his neck would be uncomfortable but he seems fine and sleeps soundly.

We are still devising new ways to keep Simon’s fingers out of his mouth so we tried using the teething rings so that he could practice his grip at the same time.  He took to shoving the ring into his mouth right away and sucking on it… but also sticking his finger in his mouth at the same time.  Silly baby…

photo.jpg

I think it’s a losing battle.  We can only try so many things to keep his hands out of his mouth but I think there will still be some amount of him sucking on them.  I wonder why he thinks they are so tasty?

Happy Father’s Day Daddy Ron!  We love you!

Simon turns over and Greens Restaurant

Day 109

Unfortunately I missed the big event of Simon turning over as I was out to lunch with friends but Ron took some pictures for me.  Simon apparently fell asleep on his side and when he woke up, he was mostly on his stomach but his arm was still suck underneath him.

IMG_0660.JPG

As he continued to struggle, he was able to get his arm out from underneath him and be fully on his stomach… but then almost falling off the edge of the sofa.  Ron was there to hold him back so no worries.

Now he enjoys tummy time a lot more and can keep his head up more easily.  When he smiles while on his tummy, he usually drops his head but was able to keep it up this time around.

Simon has a new Pooh friend too that my mom bought on her last vacation.  Big head like Simon.

Just a quick review on the place I went for lunch: Greens Restaurant at Fort Mason.  The restaurant has a beautiful view.

The restaurant also has a to-go section and they make great coffee.  The restaurant opens at 12pm so we decided to wait since we were a bit early.  We didn’t realize when walking in that the restaurant was vegetarian until we looked at the menu.  I guess with a name like “Greens”, it should have been obvious but it could also just mean it’s healthy… but anyways, it’s not vegan so they still serve things with cheese, milk, eggs, etc.  It was actually quite filling as the portion sizes are large and heavy in protein depending on the dish you order.

For a starter, we shared the potato fritters.  The red romesco sauce was delicious.

I ordered the eggplant sandwich.  The grilled bell peppers and eggplant were delicious, with some light vinaigrette.  This should probably be avoided if you’re watching your carbohydrates though with the potato salad on the side and the bread.

These are the cheese quesadillas with guacamole and a side salad of black beans with quinoa and plantain chips.

Brochettes with a parsley sauce and sides of brown rice with almonds and cabbage slaw.

Everything was pretty delicious and I’d eat here again.  They have brunch on Sundays which I think would be fun to try one day.  But don’t go here if you’re in the mood for bacon!

Simon went to sleep easily tonight, not even needing a pacifier to fall asleep or any wrapping of his hands.  He fell asleep like he used to sleep… stick ’em up!

I’ve pretty much given up hoping that he will sleep through the night anymore.  I expect him to wake up at 2 or 3am…

Trying to turn over

Day 108

Simon has been making attempts to turn over.  He usually spends quite a bit of time squirming and can get onto his side but his arm and shoulder stops him from completely turning over.

IMG_0639.JPG

Our friend Suanty’s son Samuel is able to turn all the way over from his back to his front.  They are almost the same age so we’re thinking that Simon should be able to do it soon too.

Simon’s legs are pretty strong though, he’s able to stand pretty well and support his weight by himself for about 1-2 seconds before wobbling in his center.  We just have to lightly hold him under his arms so in case he buckles.  It’s pretty amazing to feel his leg muscles at work.

IMG_0645.JPG

He’s got some muscular legs… runs in the family.

IMG_0646.JPG

Simon has been more persistent in trying to suck on his fingers.  Ron devised a new way of preventing Simon from putting his right hand into his mouth.

IMG_0647.JPG

Either like Steve Urkel from Family Matters or Al Bundy from Married With Children.  We’ll see how long this lasts to prevent him from sucking on his fingers.

Simon is still waking up in the middle of the night one time to eat.  I really hope it’s just a growth spurt.  He’s been eating more than usual if that’s any indication…

Waking up at night

Day 107

Simon continues to wake up in the middle of the night asking for food.  Last night it was at 3am and he drank 100 ml, pooped, then went back to sleep until 7am.  Not sure what’s going on but he did seem a bit fussier today.

This was taken in the morning shortly after waking up, he’s still in his PJs but already starting to drool.

Making zongzi

Day 106

So today we went to visit Ron’s parents so that they could spend some time with Simon and I could learn how to make “zongzi“.  I first went with Ron’s mom to the supermarket to buy ingredients: rice, fatty pork, Chinese sausage, dried shitake mushrooms, garlic, ginger, salted duck eggs, bamboo leaves, twine, and peanuts.  The other ingredients like soy sauce, rock sugar, rice wine, white pepper, fried shallots, and oil were already things she had at home.  After some precooking of the ingredients, we had all our ingredients laid out ready to wrap.

IMG_0630.JPG

The preparation and cooking took about 1.5-2 hours but the wrapping took about 3-4 hours.  It is pretty hard to get a hang of since if you don’t do it correctly, the rice seeps out and can ruin your zongzi.

IMG_0631.JPG

After we finished wrapping, the zongzi had to be boiled in hot water for about 5 minutes then steamed in a steamer.  Unfortunately, after steaming for about 30 minutes, Ron’s dad comes to realize that mom bought the wrong type of rice.  I had always been under the impression that you use sticky rice but at the grocery store, his mom bought long grain rice.  I asked her about it and she said this was the type of rice she normally uses.  But after steaming the zongzi, the rice wasn’t cooked all the way through and was kind of hard and very separated.  So although the filling tastes good, I’m not sure if we can salvage all the zongzi we made, there are maybe 35 of them.  We only took a few home so I’m going to try boiling the entire thing to see if the rice will cook all the way.  The flavor might all come out though into the water so we’ll see how it goes.  But thanks to Ron’s mom for teaching me how to prepare them.

During the time we were preparing them, Simon had been sleeping in his car seat for about 2 hours.

IMG_0628.JPG

For some reason, he wriggled his little hand out of the blanket and didn’t want to have it covered.

IMG_0627.JPG

We originally started out the day at their office.  Ron was going to stay with Simon and his dad at the office and as I was going to leave with Ron’s mom to go to their house to prepare the zongzi, I started to cry so Ron and Simon came home with us too.  It hit me that I have less than 2 weeks left to be full time at home with Simon.  It’s amazing how fast time flies and how much Simon has grown the last few months.  I’m not sure if I’ll survive the first day back at work without crying.  I had Ron promise me that he’ll send me at least a picture a day when I’m back at work.

On a happier note, we had a hilarious surprise from Simon as we were leaving the grandparents.  Grandpa Chung was saying his goodbyes and trying to get Simon to smile and instead, Simon broke out in hiccuping laughter!  I recently got a Flip SlideHD Camcorder and caught this:

Sleeping update: Simon did not sleep through the night last night.  I hope it’s just another growth spurt.  But at least it wasn’t too terrible, he slept 4 hours, woke up to eat, and slept another 5 hours.  He only had two real naps today so I’m hoping he will sleep longer tonight.
