Single Arm Escape

Sunday, June 30, 2013

Iris is now very good at getting one arm out of the swaddle while she sleeps. I guess she is getting more comfortable with being free which is good because with the weather being so hot recently, it could get really uncomfortable being swaddled so tightly.

Naptime. Leaning tower of baby! There is that one arm again.

Simon had a big movie day today. He went to see Monsters University with daddy then also watched Despicable Me on TV. I am sure he is going to love Despicable Me 2. Sometimes when the TV is on, Simon will ignore everything else around him, including mommy taking pictures of him.

Visit to Monterey Bay Aquarium

Saturday, June 29, 2013

Today we took a road trip to Monterey to visit the aquarium. Simon has been asking to go see the sharks and tuna fish. He also wanted to see angler fish but they are not on exhibit. It’s all because of a song called “slippery fish” that they sang at story time at the library.

However we were a bit late getting out of the house and had a somewhat long journey with some traffic. We had to stop a few times along the way to stretch our legs. Iris was fussy being in the car seat and had to get out to nurse so we made a gas station stop. Her happy face after filling her tummy.

Simon got a watermelon lollipop at the gas station.

We stopped at a place called Chopstix for lunch. I had the BBQ chicken banh mi for lunch. The meat was both spicy and heat-hot. Pretty good for $3.50.

Grandpa Chung played with Iris while we finished our meal.

We finally made it to the aquarium!

Simons favorite thing to see all day were the sharks. I personally was happy to see the turtle.

After the aquarium, we had a quick snack at Pinkberry. Simon had chocolate with strawberries, mochi, and chocolate crisps.

20130630-024835.jpg
I tried the cucumber sunflower Greek yogurt which also had olive oil and chili pepper. Overall it was a bit bland and not too appetizing. Next time I will stick with something sweet.

We ended the day with dinner at Mama Chen’s in Santa Clara, yummy Taiwanese food. Ron was happy.

It was over 100 degrees in Walnut Creek today so I was glad to escape the heat as it was more than 20 degrees cooler in Monterey.

Update on the Last Few Days

Friday, June 28, 2013

Been too tired in the evenings to blog the last few days so here is the make-up post.

TUESDAY June 25:

I had my post partum checkup today and everything is a-OK. I’ve lost 26 lbs so far and looking to lose 15-20 lbs more. Losing weight starts with healthy eating so I picked up some delicious organic strawberries at the Kaiser Farmers Market. So sweet and delicious! Kaiser Walnut Creek has a small Farmers Market every Tuesday from 10am-2pm.

I took Simon to his swim class which he loves. Although he sometimes doesn’t listen to the teacher, he seems to be learning bit by bit like “Thumbs up! Wave goodbye! Pinky in the water!” (Backstroke) Here he is just splashing at the edge of the pool before the lesson.

Happy after a shower after swim class.

Little Iris. She has a small scab above her nose from scratching herself in her sleep. Mommy hasn’t been doing a great job on trimming her nails often enough.

WEDNESDAY June 26:

Simon after opening some packages from Barnes and Noble. He loves books! We’ve discovered he really likes “The Cat in the Hat Learning Series” which have the cat explaining different topics like dinosaurs, money, bugs, etc. These new books are about sharks and whales.

THURSDAY June 27:

Last day for this session of camp! Spider-Simon! I think we are going to sign him up for another session as he seems to be enjoying it more.

Smiling Iris. She’s been smiling a lot more and occasional cooing. I love “talking” with her, she makes the cutest sounds and they change every few days.

Grandpa Chung came for a visit and Simon got comfortable reclining in the new car.

Out to dinner tonight. Yummy sashimi!

20130628-210517.jpg
Simon trying a salmon skin handroll (which ended up being terrible and in edible). I didn’t taste it but Ron said it tasted burnt and made up of chopped up salmon skin. Simon didn’t like it after the first bite so we returned it. The service was a bit off-putting as well. We felt like they were trying to rush us out of there because the food came so quickly and they cleared our table so fast. We ate at Miraku in Walnut Creek. But I have to say they have really good sashimi!

Time just flew by this week. Now on to the weekend fun. It’s going to be HOT!

Say Cheese!

Monday, June 24, 2013

Little Iris is six weeks old! Time is going by so quickly. I love watching how she changes everyday but I wish time would slow down so I could enjoy it more…

Simon started a second week of camp today and he wasn’t all too eager about it so I wanted to make sure to pick him up on time so not to traumatize him. Iris all ready to go.

20130625-004843.jpg
Simon was a little bit scared this morning when Ron dropped him off. He cried a little and wanted mommy and daddy. He didn’t seem like he enjoyed the activities during the day when he repeated to me what he did today. He didn’t sing the songs and said the roses in the garden were all dead. I’m not sure if I’m going to sign him up for additional camp weeks but will see how the rest of the week progresses.

Once he got home though, he seemed his usual self. When I wanted to take a picture of him, he pretended he had his own camera and said, “Say cheese!”

Iris played on her play mat this afternoon and showed interest in the hard plastic rattle. She didn’t like the quieter plush animals. She also did tummy time and was able to propel herself a few inches using her legs and feet. Although her neck muscles aren’t quite strong enough to lift her neck, her legs are plenty strong.

20130625-005634.jpg

Last night she slept almost five hours straight then woke up briefly to eat then slept another almost three hours so I got a relatively good rest. As for progress on her drinking from the bottle? Right now, Iris is winning versus the bottle. On Friday, I was able to get her to drink 40ml only. I’m guessing she usually drinks 60-90ml per feeding from the breast. Today Ron tried feeding her from the bottle and she only drank about 30ml before crying uncontrollably and only calming down when I breastfed her. Our nanny was able to get her to drink 80ml last week but I’m not sure how she was able to get her to accept the bottle. When I try, Iris will use her tongue to push the nipple out of her mouth or gag when the milk starts to drip in. I might need to try another bottle brand. For now, we will have to keep trying.

Exhausting Sunday

Sunday, June 23, 2013

Whew! I am tired… this morning Ron went to a meet up with his saltwater fish tank aficionados so I spent the day with both kiddos. We managed to go to Target for some light shopping and then to McDonald’s for lunch. At Target, I couldn’t find one of those special shopping carts where there is a separate section for toddlers to sit so ended up having Simon sit in the shopping cart and carrying Iris in a sling. Then put the baby/toddler bag in the main compartment of the stroller which didn’t leave much room for the things we needed to buy. The bag we carry for both kids is the LARGE size classic messenger by Timbuk2. It’s huge compared to our previous bags but very roomy and easy to access stuff. There is also a bag organizer inside to make the bag have more compartments for smaller stuff. I’ll have to take a picture next time. It’s pretty heavy but convenient. Lucky for me, Iris didn’t get fussy until we got to McDonald’s. I had to eat my lunch while nursing her but eventually she fell asleep.

20130623-230619.jpg
Simon fell asleep for his nap without too much fuss but Iris didn’t want to fall asleep in her own bed so I ended up having to hold her until she nodded off. She woke up briefly when Auntie Tiffany and Little Zoey came for a visit.

20130623-230855.jpg
Iris easily fell asleep again while being held and eventually Simon woke up from his nap to have his snack. Recently we’ve been allowing him to get out of bed by himself and walk down the stairs. We used to have the door safety latch so he wouldn’t wander out of his room without us knowing. He seems more responsible now so less likely to run off and get into mischief.

Zoey and Simon having snack time together. Simon shared some of his strawberries with Zoey and enjoyed feeding her with smaller pieces that I cut up for her.

20130624-030730.jpg
Ron made it back to cook dinner which was great because I did not have the energy to cook. Iris usually falls asleep for the night around 8:30-9pm but stayed up until 10pm tonight. Maybe overstimulated from our visitors’ voices. My little star.

20130623-231714.jpg

Ouch. My arms and back are sore from carrying Iris, moving and lifting the car seat in and out of the car, and lugging around all our stuff. I’m looking forward to a good night’s rest. I hope Iris will cooperate 🙂
