Low Key Labor Day Holiday

Day 188

After a busy weekend, we took it slow today. Woke up late and took a walk to have some noodles for lunch. I carried Simon using the Ergo carrier and he fell asleep so I had to eat my noodles carefully so not to spill on his head. The good thing about the Ergo is that there is a hood so I could cover him from any potential drips as well. On the way home though he woke up so I decided to try carrying him in the back.

It is a bit weird feeling since I’m afraid he might fall out but he is actually pretty secure and it is easier to walk uphill with him on my back since I can lean forward more.

So we spent the rest of the day at home just relaxing. We let Simon practice standing and see if he could keep his balance. He can stand on his feet for 1-2 seconds before toppling over.

We think we might be letting him practice standing too much since he gets kind of cranky when on his tummy for too long. He just might stand up before he starts to crawl.

Lil’ Dude

Day 187

We had another very busy today so I planned ahead to give Simon and late morning meal before his nap. He had some green beans mixed with pear puree and seemed to enjoy it. He’s wondering if there is anymore?

We met up with our friends Will and Phil at Millbrae Pancake House. Will was visiting from LA and Phil brought his son Joshie. I forgot to take photos of them but I did take a picture of my brunch, eggs benedict served with a side of hash browns.

Thanks to Will for treating us to brunch! After we finished eating, we headed over to the Millbrae Art and Wine Festival. We hadn’t realized it was this weekend until we drove by it as we headed to brunch. We just walked around a bit but couldn’t eat anything since we were still stuffed. Then we headed to our next event of the day, a housewarming party in Dublin. We did do a bit of shopping beforehand so stopped by Barnes & Nobles so I picked up Food Inc. since I haven’t read a book in a while and I heard this one was particularly interesting.

Simon was really well behaved for most of the day. He surprisingly didn’t fuss much. He seems to be getting more used to being outside and can fall asleep more easily for his naps.

But tomorrow we’re going to have a relaxing day in the city. I wish we could have more three day weekends, sometimes you need a day off just to recover from the weekend.

My friend Garfield

Day 186

Good morning! and already drooling…

This afternoon we went to Magic Mountain Playground at Coyote Point Park in San Mateo. We went to celebrate a friend’s son’s 1st birthday party. They reserved two BBQ pits around the playground and brought some pre-cooked Korean food and cake! Simon was pretty well behaved and got to meet a lot of other little kids. He also had the opportunity to sit in his first swing!

He seemed a bit perplexed so wasn’t sure what to make of the swinging motion. When he’s a bit older, then we’ll try again.

After the party, we went to Babies R Us to pick up some things. We have basically given up on making food for Simon since it’s just easier to buy it from the store. I’m not too happy about the meats in the jar though since they use cornstarch in it… so maybe we’ll try to make our own chicken, beef, etc. The fruits and vegetables seem fine though and are pretty tasty without added sugar.

Simon was making funny grunting sounds while we were going around the store. He was trying to poop and was exerting a lot of effort. You can also check out him twisting his wrist, I guess discovering his range of motion.

Simon isn’t crawling yet so we’re still trying to get him to strengthen his muscles. Ron found an alternative use for Simon’s overalls, to help him “do the wheelbarrow” (or a partial handstand). Simon’s probably wondering what the heck is going on!

In the evening, we went to visit Garfield (actually we went to our friends’ Susan and Ken’s place for dinner).

After playing with Garfield, Simon needed a little nap. He fell asleep while Ken was holding him, the first time I think he’s fallen asleep in someone else’s arms besides family. We eventually put him down on the sofa and blocked him in with pillows so he wouldn’t roll off.

Simon woke up from his little nap and proceeded to play. Garfield is very protective and wanted to keep Simon from falling backwards.

Overall, we all had a very busy day. Tomorrow is also another busy day full of activities! I’m glad it’s a long weekend and the weather is beautiful!

Off The Grid and Appearance of Simon’s First Tooth

Day 185

To kick-off the labor day weekend, we went to Off the Grid at Fort Mason. Every Friday night from 5-9pm the food trucks of the bay area converge at the Fort Mason parking lot to offer their food. I’ve been wanting to go since I heard about it last month so finally found time to check it out. Check their Facebook page for the participating vendors as it changes each week.

As usual, the warm weather did not last long so it was really foggy and cold at Fort Mason. There was a huge crowd of people and long lines for certain vendors so this made it a little bit less cold, all those bodies were blocking the wind. We opted this time to try the vendors with shorter lines and maybe will go back someday to try the more in demand vendors when the weather is nicer (some of the lines were ridiculously long).

We started at the Onigilly cart. They serve onigiri which are Japanese rice balls with meats of veggies and wrapped in seaweed or I think in this case, rice paper. They are $2.75 each or 2 for $5 and they also have a Bento box. We decided to try their tuna and eggplant onigiri. Since it was a cold evening, they weren’t very satisfying and I felt like the rice was a bit mushy. The eggplant topping was my favorite part. I might try them again but maybe when it’s not so cold as I think I was craving something warm.

We tried a beef brisket slider from City Smoke Barbeque. I think it was $4. The brisket was delicious and you could taste the smoke in the meat. The slaw and sweet bun made it extra yummy.

Next was Hapa Ramen and their slow cooked pork ramen with an added egg. $9 for the ramen, extra $1 for the egg. The pork was tender, the broth a bit light but delicious when you add the Japanese spice. There was sweet corn kernels and green onions which just added to the broth. But I didn’t really like the noodles, a bit thin and too soft. My favorite thing though was the pickled cucumbers that the have on the side, crunchy and tangy.

Lastly, we tried the chicken and pork tacos from Takorea. This place almost ruined our night. The wait for our tacos was really way too long, for 2 tacos, it took 20-25 minutes. The tacos are $3 each and the menu tonight was chicken, pork and vegetarian, limit 4 tacos per person. They were out of the beef. After ordering, there were a lot of people standing around waiting…. some person said they waited over 30 minutes. I’m not sure what took so long but it seemed like they were grilling each order individually and they had to stop to clean their grill inside a few times. Eventually though, I thought they were really good. The meats were marinated well and grilled well. The red cabbage and pickles were delicious and the reddish mayo sauce was really tasty too. I liked them also because they use only one soft taco shell and lined it with sliced turnip (or some other crunchy root vegetable) so that the taco shell didn’t get soggy, less carbohydrates is always better for me.

After that, we left for home. I missed getting Cupkates but I’m sure we’ll be back and try some other vendors as well.

Simon was well behaved the entire time we were at Off the Grid but I’m sure he was glad to get home to change into some warm pajamas since it was cold out there. He’s biting his lower lip as he is started to teethe.

He’s choosing to chew on harder objects now too. It must be soothing. Plus he likes this rattle since it makes a clicking sound and has a mirror on one side of it.

I was shocked when I looked into his mouth and saw a little white spot on his lower gum line. His first tooth!

My, how time flies! He had been gnawing on my finger and it did hurt but I didn’t realize his tooth was actually pushing its way out already. Our baby is growing up!

Six months old

Day 184

Today Simon is six months old! Wow, how time flies! He must have known he would need extra energy today since he slept 8 hours continuously last night.

He must have known it was a momentous occasion as he made a lot of good videos today.

The first one is Simon standing up with Ron holding him by one arm. He locks his knees and is a bit wobbly but it seems pretty amazing for a six month old.

Simon likes his pacifier but usually can’t get it into his mouth in the correct direction. Do you think he’ll do it this time?

More experimentation with standing. Ron had Simon lean up against the sofa to see if he could support himself.

Overall, he did a pretty good job with a bit of wobbling. It’ll be interesting when he starts walking…

After his morning exercise, Simon wanted to spend the afternoon on the couch. A regular couch potato, his drink next to him and remote control in hand.

For dinner, we went to the mall to use some of my Groupon and Living Social vouchers.

From Groupon, I had $10 to spend at San Francisco Soup Company, so we got two regular sized bowls of soup. Actually kind of expensive for a bowl of soup and a piece of bread (~$5 each bowl). Here is a sweet corn chowder. It was yummy but I couldn’t get over how much it cost for a bowl of soup. If I didn’t have the Groupon, I probably wouldn’t have eaten there. I spent $5 to get the $10 value.

The tomato bisque. Quite tangy compared to the corn chowder but very smooth.

From Living Social, I had $20 to spend at Froots, so we got the Froots club sandwich and a fruit smoothie. The prices here seem more reasonable. The sandwich was $7.99 and the smoothie was $3.99. I spent $10 to get the $20 value. I actually purchased two so I have $40 to spend so will be getting more smoothies in the future.

After Ron and I finished our dinner, I fed Simon. He ate a whole container of pears and still seemed very hungry so I made him an extra portion of rice cereal mixed with breast milk to feed him. Just watch his expression…

Although he didn’t seem very happy about it, he still ate the rest of it. I’m glad to find that he’s not too picky about food.

So Simon had a relaxing day turning 6 months old. All he had to do was put his feet up and relax.

Happy 6 months Simon!
