Simon Day 16 – Marathon Feeding

Simon was a bit difficult to take care of today. After sleeping for about 4 hours, he woke up at 4am wanting to eat. I breast fed him until he stopped which was until 4:30am. We changed his diaper then tried to put him back to sleep. Unfortunately his eyes were wide open and he started to fuss. Ron tried to calm him for a while but Simon wouldn’t have any of that. Since Ron hadn’t slept, I took over and brought him out to the living room to spend some time with him. He just wanted to look around for a while and breast fed again at 5:30am before finally falling asleep on my chest around 6am. I also fell asleep and didn’t wake up until about 8:30am when Ron’s parents came over with breakfast. He continued to sleep and slept about 3.5 hours!

Then throughout the day, Simon would sleep only about 30 to 90 minutes at a time before waking up wanting to eat again. I basically felt like I was marathon breast feeding. It’s been an exhausting day. I hope tomorrow morning will be better.

It’s impossible to be upset with his cute face. I love watching his facial expressions, especially the spontaneous little grins.

Simon also had a visitor today, Vicky X. came after work to see him and brought him some toys.

It was a nice day in SF so our apartment was pretty warm. Simon didn’t like being covered up so just let him sprawl out. Looks so comfortable doesn’t he?

Simon Day 15 – Trip to Costco

We needed some supplies for home so decided to brave going to Costco for the first time with Simon. Since we were going around noon on a weekday, we figured it should be less busy compared to trying to go on a weeknight or weekend.

He was awake when we bundled him up in the car seat but promptly fell asleep after a few minutes in the car.

He slept through the whole shopping experience and did not even wake up when I enticed him with the all beef hot dog.

We made one more stop at Discount Builders Supply to pick up a few things to outfit our house for Simon. The cats have been trying to sneak into our bedroom where Simon’s bassinet is so we needed to add something to our door so that it would automatically close behind us and so the cats couldn’t push the door open. We ended buying a door pin with a spring that will slowly close the door and have some resistance so the cats can’t push the door open. We also bought a detachable shower head so it would be easier for us to give Simon a bath. Simon continued to sleep.

But promptly woke up when we arrived home and was hungry. After eating, he stayed quietly awake for a few hours.

Since he didn’t want to sleep, we decided to give him a bath and another change of clothes. Although he didn’t enjoy the bath, after it was done, he seemed to quiet down and went to sleep shortly after. I love the way he has his arms when he sleeps. He looks so relaxed here, like he’s lying on the beach sunbathing.

Or wide open and stretched out. Simon is starting to extend his legs straight so looks like he’s getting more used to being out of the womb since he doesn’t favor the fetal position as much anymore.

Hope everyone had a good St. Patrick’s Day! Simon didn’t have on a green outfit so I pinched his chubby little cheeks!

Simon Day 14 – Picture of the day

Today Simon’s grandparents came to visit. The Chungs for lunch and The Tams after dinner. Lucky for our parents, he stayed alert each time for about an hour. In the evening time, when my mom was playing with him, he started to track her hand with his eyes. He’s getting more interesting to watch everyday.

Also, his face is getting chubbier again, he’s recovering nicely after his weight loss in the hospital.

Oh, and the stub of his umbilical cord fell off today so hopefully we’ll get to try bath time again soon to see if he likes it better when he’s surrounded by warm water rather than just sponging water on him.

Simon Day 13 – 2 week check-up (9 lbs, 14 oz!)

Simon seemed to have a rough evening yesterday. He was probably over stimulated with all the visitors. When he was awake, he would start crying even though he was already fed and had his diaper changed. Rocking him in a dark room was what finally calmed him down so that he could go back to sleep. He slept well after midnight and early morning so at least Ron and I were able to get some rest. It’s the worst feeling when your baby is crying and you’re not sure what else you can do to help him. I’m just glad that he wasn’t sick or anything, just had too much energy that he needed to cry out.

This afternoon, Simon had his second check-up. We met his pediatrician, Dr. Wong, for the first time since last week we had a doctor who was just covering. Simon weighed in at 9 lbs and 14 ounces! I was a bit shocked, that means he has gained 1 lb and 2 oz since his first check-up last Monday, only 7 days ago. He really has been eating well. Dr. Wong says the usual weight gain is 1 oz per day so he’s an overachiever. Dr. Wong was great in answering all our questions and very detailed in the information she gave us. Simon did not need any vaccinations this visit but she explained which ones he would get at his 2 month check-up. The office also gave us a packet of all the Vaccine Information Sheets (VIS) for all the vaccines he would eventually get. Everything was very organized. I was very impressed.

We dressed Simon in a bright green T-shirt that Kaiser Redwood City gave us along with a diaper bag. Since it was only a T-shirt, Ron put on a pair of orange shorts on Simon. These are Ron’s favorite colors: green and orange. Simon was sleeping before we left for the appointment so we just put him in the car seat and he continued to sleep.

Once we got home, since the weather was so nice, we decided to take a short walk and have a snack. We ended up on Lori’s Diner on Sutter St at Powell St. and ordered milkshakes. I ordered an Oreo Cookie shake and Ron had the Orange Dream. It’s been a while since I’ve had a milkshake, it was yummy but couldn’t drink it all, it was too cold!

Simon was good during the outing but his eating schedule got off schedule so was a bit cranky when we finally arrived home. He needed a diaper change and needed to be fed then he was quietly alert for about 30 minutes before wanting to feed again and finally soothed to sleep for a while.

Simon Day 12 – Visitors

Today Simon had a busy day full of visitors. First starting at 10am, Ruby and her daughter Amanda came to visit and brought us breakfast of some yummy Chinese breakfast buns. She brought us way too much so we have plenty of leftovers (BBQ pork buns, coconut buns, paper wrapped cake, pineapple bun, and raisin bun).

Next visitor was Vicki. Simon had just eaten so was fast asleep.

Then Virginia dropped by to see Simon too.

Last but not least, Patsy and Will dropped by to see Simon and entertain Misu. The cats have been a bit neglected since we brought Simon home. Simon takes up so much time and energy that it’s hard to find time to play with the cats. So it was good to have visitors today since they paid some attention to our kitties.

Simon was dressed up in another of his CAL onesies from Uncle Henry. He only has three, one is grey with “UC BERKELEY”, one is navy blue with “CAL”, and this is the white one with “California”.

Simon might have had too much excitement today as since late afternoon, he hasn’t been sleeping very well. Only about 30-60 minutes at a time then he wakes up crying for food and/or needing a diaper change. He’s been making funny noises and waking himself up as well. I hope he can go back to sleeping on his regular schedule by tomorrow. He’s been averaging 15-16 hours of sleep each day. We are using this iPhone application called “Baby Geek” to monitor is sleeping habits, eating duration and frequency, and number of diaper changes (pee and poop). It also lets you keep track of immunizations, developmental milestones, temperature, nail trimming, bathing, etc. Overall, it’s a pretty neat program.

He has his second pediatrician appointment tomorrow afternoon. I’m looking forward to meeting his new doctor. I also would like to find out how much he weighs, I hope he is gaining weight appropriately.
