Whaler’s Village and Lahaina Grill

Ron and I wandered over to Whaler’s Village this morning. You can walk along the beach and reach the shopping center so it’s quite convenient from our hotel. We just wandered through the stores, just to mention a few of our favorites:

Crazy Shirts
David and Goliath – shirts that “play on words”
Maui Toy Works

Afterwards we went to the food court downstairs, I ordered a tuna melt from Nikki’s Pizza. Nothing too special but well priced for tourist food, ~$7 including the fries.

Ron had the fast food Chinese.

We returned to our room for a nap before heading down to our resort’s restaurant Longboards and had our complimentary drinks.

I tried some mango concoction.

Ron had some passion fruit and strawberry swirl drink while reading a magazine.

The drinks were very sweet and didn’t seem like they had much alcohol added. Maybe because they were free?

For dinner, we went to Lahaina Grill. We figured we should have at least one fabulous dinner while we were on vacation and I read good things about this restaurant. Thanks to trusty Opentable, we secured a reservation.

The restaurant is the ground floor of a (former?) inn. It’s dimly lit with lots of interesting art pieces on their walls. Although it looks like it could be a fancy restaurant, everyone seemed pretty casual… should be no surprise since Hawaiians are usually pretty laid back.

Usually if the bread is good, then the meal should be good as well. I can tell you that this bread with the chives butter was delicious. The bread was warmed and the butter was soft and easy to spread. I hate hard butter.

Our appetizer:
THE CAKE WALK
Petite servings of Kona lobster crab cake, sweet Louisiana rock shrimp cake and seared ahi cake.
The two small red dollops of hot sauce went really well with the seared ahi cake.

Our salad:
WARM PECAN CRUSTED GOAT CHEESE AND BABY ARUGULA SALAD
Pears, roasted beets, Poha berry honey-mustard.
I think we’re really starting to like fresh goat cheese. Everything went really well together in this salad.

Ron’s main course:
MACADAMIA NUT SMOKED KUROBUTA PORK CHOP
All natural, organic American pork, Poblano chile and Dungeness crab golden potato hash, pickled red cabbage and apples, pomegranate demi-glace.
Really fatty but Ron liked the pickled red cabbage and apple compote thing. Hard to taste macadamia nut flavor but still a yummy dish.

Jen’s main course:
KONA COFFEE ROASTED RACK OF LAMB
Light coffee-Cabernet demi-glace, herb infused mashed potatoes.
A bit bitter but with some sweetness, just like adding sugar to your coffee. The lamb was cooked perfectly and the sauce was divine.

We were so stuffed, we couldn’t make it to dessert… so instead, finished off our bottle of wine and headed back for the night.

The wine we had was a cabernet sauvignon from Australia, named EVIL. We picked it for it’s unusual name and it turned out to be a pretty good wine. In general I have a hard time drinking red wines but I had no problem at all with this one. I’m shocked to find that this wine is only $11 a bottle online! But I guess we were in a nice restaurant and there’s always markup… it went well with our meal so I’m glad we had it.

Marriott Maui Ocean Club

Today was a restful day. At least for me, I just went to the pool downstairs to sun and play with my camera (actually my dad’s Nikon D80, I’ve been *borrowing* it for the last 6 months or so…) since I don’t really know how to use all the settings yet.

So first I thought I’d just show you the layout of our 2-bedroom villa at the Marriott Maui Ocean Club.

It has a guestroom with it’s own bathroom:

Also a master bedroom:

And also a living room area with a kitchenette and the oceanfront view:

It’s way too huge for just the two of us so we hope to be able to share it with friends in the future.

Here’s one of the pictures I took as the sun was setting, a bit grainy so I’m still trying to work it out..

Ron went on a night scuba dive. He had a different view of the sunset.

He said the first dive he went on was at a sunken ship. They is a Carthaginian replica sunk in Lahaina. He went down 97 feet to explore the ship and its sea creatures. He said he saw squid but no octopus. A fellow diver had an underwater camera so hopefully we can get some photos from him later. He went on a regular second dive to check out more underwater fish. Sounded like it was a bit scary since it’s really dark except for the torch they give you.

Molokini Crater and Turtle Town

We had an early morning start as we booked a morning scuba/snorkeling trip. We reported to the Maui Dive Shop at 6:15am! It was still dark and the moon was still out when we left around 5:30am but the sun was already up by the time we reached Maalaea Harbor. We checked in and received our flippers and snorkel gear before heading to the boat, the Maka Koa.

We first headed out to Molokini Crater then to Turtle Town. There were two groups of eight scuba divers and we had four snorkelers. Ron and I didn’t bring cameras this time so instead purchased the on-board photographer’s photos and video. The photographer mostly followed the scuba divers. We (the snorkelers) saw a shark and more turtles than the scuba divers but unfortunately I have no photos. The turtles were amazing though, they are a protected species so we’re not allowed to touch them but they would suddenly surface right near us. They look so cute as you see their huge shell bobbing above water and their heads bobbing up and down. They warn you not to go and give them a hug… but when you see them, you really want to go give them a hug… even though it is a hundred year old reptile.

Here are some highlights of our trip… continue reading for the dolphins!!!

We went with the Maui Dive Shop on the Maka Koa.

This is our group waiting at the “slip”.

Here is an eel… not the type you eat, I don’t think.

Here is Ron, very obvious in his yellow board shorts, giving a shaka.

Here’s the photographer having some fun and writing ALOHA in the sand on a sea cucumber.

There were only hard corals that we could see and the fish weren’t as vibrant as compared to the waters in Philippines.

Here’s Ron with a bunch of other scuba divers.

A sea urchin.

Here is a Moorish Idol, the same fish as “Gill” in the movie “Finding Nemo”.

Here I am returning from our first snorkeling trip. Yes, I use a boogie board for a flotation device as I’m not that strong of a swimmer and in chopping water, it’s my security blanket.

On our way to Turtle Town!

A puffer fish.

Ron on his second dive.

One of the green sea turtles entering a cave of sorts.

Not sure what type of fish this is exactly, a trumpet fish I think.

We also purchased the video from the trip and there’s Ron “performing” for the camera. When I get some time to edit the video, I’ll post it up.

The best surprise of the trip were these dolphins that were riding the wake of the boat. They were leaping right behind us as we were returning to the dock. Beautiful animals.

My hair got so messed up after the salt water.

But not as bad as Ron’s!

We were so exhausted after we returned to the hotel, we slept and didn’t wake up until sunset. The winds helped to clear some of the fog away giving way to yet another beautiful sunset.

We BBQ’d downstairs by the pool, rib eye steaks with garlic onion seasoning, white corn, garlic bread, and Japanese yam.

Here’s the inside of the Japanese yam, it’s light brown on the outside but deep purple on the inside.

Our delicious steak that went well with the bottle of wine we bought yesterday from the Maui Winery.

A wonderful way to end the day, a great meal with the one you love.

Maui Winery

We had a late start to the day so we only made it to one stop today. We spent the morning planning Ron’s scuba trips and snorkeling for me. Should be more interesting if we get some good pictures while out on the ocean.

Back to today, we stopped at Maui’s Winery, aka Tedeschi Vineyards. It’s quite a drive from our resort and at first we thought we went the wrong way. But if you follow their directions, just keep going, even though Highway 37 becomes Route 31, you’ll reach the tasting room of the winery eventually, just be patient…

They offer free tours but only at 10:30am, 1pm, and 3pm. We just missed the 3pm tour so went directly to the tasting room instead. They offer each person 4 tastings or 6 tastings per couple for free. They have grape wines, pineapple wines, and raspberry wines. They have sparkling and still.

In the Bay Area, they sell the Maui Blanc (pineapple wine), Maui Splash! (pineapple and passion fruit wine), Maui Sparkling (pineapple wine with a bit of fizz) at Cost Plus and/or BevMo! At the winery they also have a blush, reds, another sparkling, and a raspberry wine. They weren’t serving all of their selection today but it didn’t matter, I fell in love with the raspberry wine. You could just pour it over ice cream by itself or it’d go really well with a bar of dark chocolate or a chocolate lava cake! Makes your mouth water? We bought a few bottles to bring home, so invite yourself over to have a taste test 🙂

As we were leaving the tasting room, there was a beautiful cat sitting outside.

He or she didn’t really want to stay put though and kept on wandering away from us.

We also walked away with a box of their white chocolates with macadamia nuts and infused with their Maui Blanc Pineapple Wine.

Since we didn’t get to try this red, we bought a bottle to have with the rib eye steaks that we bought to BBQ in the next few days.

Another beautiful sunset in Maui.

Lahaina

For lunch today we decided to try the Cool Cat Cafe, voted the “Best Burger on Maui”. Ron and I ordered the Frings (1/2 basket of fries, 1/2 basket of onion rings). The onion rings were well fried and the onions very sweet. The fries had some sort of spice mix on it.

I ordered the Jailhouse Rock burger with sauteed mushrooms, Jack cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, sweet Maui onions, and thousand island dressing on a French roll. Oh so delicious!

Ron ordered The Duke burger with bacon, melted cheese, and golden onion rings covered in their special BBQ sauce.

I enjoyed both burgers equally… hee hee…

Ron topped off his burger with a light Hawaiian beer.

Needless to say, we were both really stuffed so we went for a bit of shopping to walk off some of the calories. We went in search of two jewelry stores that I saw ads for in all the Maui magazines. The first one called Maui Divers advertised these pretty bamboo pendants. I think I liked them because they remind me of a flute but I didn’t like them as much when seeing them in person. We also visited another store called Glass Mango Designs which advertised these glass jellyfish pendants. At the store we found out they are made by an artist called Jeremy Sinkus. They were beautiful but the lady at the store quoted me the price of $225 for the most expensive to $180 for the least expensive. I was like “thanks, but I’ll have to think about it…”. I’m glad I didn’t buy as from an online store, they range from $60 to $90! Click here for one place that you can buy online.

We did some more walking around downtown Lahaina and before getting back to the car, saw this interesting sight, it looked like a recent ship wreck.

We almost couldn’t get out of our parking spot because they were having some sort of kids marathon on the street so it was closed off. Apparently it is the “Front Street Mile” for kids and adults. We got out of there just in time before they wouldn’t let us out.

Before heading back to our hotel, we stopped at the MauiGrown Coffee store. They have samplers which you can request before buying a cup of coffee. Ron and I weren’t too impressed by their coffee overall but maybe they’re still a young company. They do have a plantation with a free self-guided tour so hopefully we’ll have time to check it out as the store employee said there are cherries on the trees right now.

After we got back to the hotel, I fell right asleep.

I missed the beautiful sunset but Ron caught a great picture of it for me.
