Columbus Day

Monday, October 14, 2013

School is closed today for Columbus Day so I took the day off to watch Simon and also to unpack and clean. I got a lot done but there’s still so much more to do! Our kitchen is mostly tidied up except for a box of small appliances,a box of plastic Tupperware, and kids’ stuff like cups and bottles. I went to Walnut Creek too and collected some stray items but there’s still a few more trips needed to bring it all. Not to mention how many trips it will take to move Ron’s fish tank. Our tenants will officially move in November 1st so we just have a few more weeks!

Our kiddos’ pictures today.

Iris in the jumper this morning. I think purple looks good on her.

He was a little bored at home today so I hope he’ll be more eager to go to school tomorrow to be able to play with other kids. The rest of the week they have “Fall Camp” instead of actual school so maybe he’ll like it even better without set lesson plans to follow. Guess we will see.

Ouch! My poor sore back… I hope to be done cleaning soon. It feels so much longer than a week since we moved in.

Endless cleaning. That’s what it feels like these days.

Saturday, October 12:
I think we were all tired today after a week living in boxes.

But we had a lunch date with our Walnut Creek neighbors so headed out there to meet them and also clean up whatever remained inside our home. Unfortunately, Simon seemed to have a fever and he complained of a headache so he had a long nap on our neighbor’s sofa.

Poor guy wasn’t his normal energetic self. He was a little better after a dose of ibuprofen. At least when we got back to Berkeley, he wanted to play rather than continue sleeping.

Iris was unaffected and I hope she stays well.

Sunday, October 13:

Today is Iris’ 5 month birthday!

We had a celebration luncheon today with the Chungs for Henry, William, Ron, and myself (and Iris). Our birthdays are all within 20 days of each other so we just combined our celebration. We had brunch at a place called Next Door in Berkeley where they serve comfort food. Overall the food was pretty good, service pretty slow but friendly, and a beautiful space to hang out. Probably would be better for smaller groups and looks like they have a cool happy hour.

Simon was feeling all better and happy again.

Iris was sleepy though but thankfully not fussy. She even let everyone hold her today without fuss. Here she is with Uncle William.

For dessert, we had a delicious (I thought) passion fruit lime Bavarian from Tartine. Betty and Henry ventured out to the city to wait in a long, cold line to pick up my craving. I’ve been wanting to try it for a while and I thought it was lovely. Most everyone did not like the shaved coconut on top but I think it gave it good texture. Thank you Betty and Henry for bringing it!

In the midst of our mess, I didn’t get a great picture for this month but this will have to do. Iris, happy 5 months!

Guess Who Loves Jumpers?

Friday, October 11, 2013

We borrowed this jumper from Auntie Tiffany and Iris sat in it for the first time this morning.

I think it’s safe to assume she likes it a lot! Thanks Auntie Tiffany! I remember Simon loved his jumper too. Bouncing to his hearts content and grabbing at all the new toys. I love to see the joy in their faces when discovering new things.

I was so glad to see Simon happy this evening. He had a tantrum this morning about picking a pair of shoes to wear to school this morning. He wasn’t allowed to play with his cars and trucks so instead read books all evening. Stopping for a few moments to give me some smiles.

Cheese!

Better Day

Thursday, October 10, 2013

Little girl is getting good at grabbing things. Now she can more consistently pull on the toy frog to play the music on her bouncy chair.

Today was a better day overall, happier with some smiles.

At drop off to school this morning, Simon cried but didn’t try to hang on my leg and instead held the teacher’s hand and waved goodbye to me with tears. So much improved that when he would scream and try to run. He said he had lots of fun today with making a hat, putting together a book, and drawing.

Today we finally had our cable TV and Internet setup. Simon was happy to watch a little television and I was happy to take a little nap while he watched before bedtime. Iris turned in early tonight but I hope this doesn’t mean she will wake up too early. I’ve been packing Simon’s lunches in the morning so need those 30 minutes that Iris usually sleeps to finish that up. His lunches have consisted of not so exciting stuff/leftovers so I haven’t been taking pictures to share. The kitchen is still a bit of a mess but I hope we can spend some time organizing this weekend.

Smiles and Tantrums

Wednesday, October 9, 2013

Tonight the kids were polar opposites. Iris was happy and smiley.

20131010-051105.jpg
Simon threw a tantrum all through dinner and just until his bath and bedtime. He first insisted on building an army tank with Legos before dinner. Impossible since we didn’t have instructions and not easily just to put together. So he refused to come to the table for dinner. When Ron got back from work, Simon started to come to the table but then got fixated on a light in the hallway that wasn’t working and insisted on wanting it to be on. Then one thing led to another until he finally calmed down, requested a hug, ate some fruit, took a shower, brushed his teeth, read a bedtime story and sang his bedtime sing with Ron, and went to bed.

Through it all, Iris was happy and smiling and didn’t seem bothered. She had her bath and went to sleep easily. Amazingly she only woke up once last night so I hope she repeats that tonight.

Simon’s tantrum might be related to some kid at school not sharing a toy with him which he mentioned to Ron. Since he couldn’t “control” that situation, he was trying to exert his control at home. We do our best to empathize but also to teach him that not all kids know how to share and there are times when they prefer to play by themselves with something. He’s the same way at times, wanting to play alone but also at times, only wanting to play with others. He was in a great mood when I picked him up from school but how easily the situation changes. *sigh*…
