Say Cheese!

Little Iris is six weeks old! Time is going by so quickly. I love watching how she changes everyday but I wish time would slow down so I could enjoy it more…

Simon started a second week of camp today and he wasn’t all too eager about it so I wanted to make sure to pick him up on time so not to traumatize him. Iris all ready to go.

Simon was a little bit scared this morning when Ron dropped him off. He cried a little and wanted mommy and daddy. He didn’t seem like he enjoyed the activities during the day when he repeated to me what he did today. He didn’t sing the songs and said the roses in the garden were all dead. I’m not sure if I’m going to sign him up for additional camp weeks but will see how the rest of the week progresses.

Once he got home though, he seemed his usual self. When I wanted to take a picture of him, he pretended he had his own camera and said, “Say cheese!”

Iris played on her play mat this afternoon and showed interest in the hard plastic rattle. She didn’t like the quieter plush animals. She also did tummy time and was able to propel herself a few inches using her legs and feet. Although her neck muscles aren’t quite strong enough to lift her neck, her legs are plenty strong.

Last night she slept almost five hours straight then woke up briefly to eat then slept another almost three hours so I got a relatively good rest. As for progress on her drinking from the bottle? Right now, Iris is winning versus the bottle. On Friday, I was able to get her to drink 40ml only. I’m guessing she usually drinks 60-90ml per feeding from the breast. Today Ron tried feeding her from the bottle and she only drank about 30ml before crying uncontrollably and only calming down when I breastfed her. Our nanny was able to get her to drink 80ml last week but I’m not sure how she was able to get her to accept the bottle. When I try, Iris will use her tongue to push the nipple out of her mouth or gag when the milk starts to drip in. I might need to try another bottle brand. For now, we will have to keep trying.

Exhausting Sunday

Sunday, June 23, 2013

Whew! I am tired… this morning Ron went to a meet up with his saltwater fish tank aficionados so I spent the day with both kiddos. We managed to go to Target for some light shopping and then to McDonald’s for lunch. At Target, I couldn’t find one of those special shopping carts where there is a separate section for toddlers to sit so ended up having Simon sit in the shopping cart and carrying Iris in a sling. Then put the baby/toddler bag in the main compartment of the stroller which didn’t leave much room for the things we needed to buy. The bag we carry for both kids is the LARGE size classic messenger by Timbuk2. It’s huge compared to our previous bags but very roomy and easy to access stuff. There is also a bag organizer inside to make the bag have more compartments for smaller stuff. I’ll have to take a picture next time. It’s pretty heavy but convenient. Lucky for me, Iris didn’t get fussy until we got to McDonald’s. I had to eat my lunch while nursing her but eventually she fell asleep.

Simon fell asleep for his nap without too much fuss but Iris didn’t want to fall asleep in her own bed so I ended up having to hold her until she nodded off. She woke up briefly when Auntie Tiffany and Little Zoey came for a visit.

Iris easily fell asleep again while being held and eventually Simon woke up from his nap to have his snack. Recently we’ve been allowing him to get out of bed by himself and walk down the stairs. We used to have the door safety latch so he wouldn’t wander out of his room without us knowing. He seems more responsible now so less likely to run off and get into mischief.

Zoey and Simon having snack time together. Simon shared some of his strawberries with Zoey and enjoyed feeding her with smaller pieces that I cut up for her.

Ron made it back to cook dinner which was great because I did not have the energy to cook. Iris usually falls asleep for the night around 8:30-9pm but stayed up until 10pm tonight. Maybe overstimulated from our visitors’ voices. My little star.

Ouch. My arms and back are sore from carrying Iris, moving and lifting the car seat in and out of the car, and lugging around all our stuff. I’m looking forward to a good night’s rest. I hope Iris will cooperate 🙂

My Friend Hello Kitty

Iris’ first Hello Kitty.

Thank you Auntie Vicki!

My bright eyed boy.

Today was our first trip to Costco as a family. It’s a much different shopping experience when you have a curious toddler and unpredictable baby. We were rushing to get all the things we needed before Simon got too hungry and Iris woke up from her nap. Not an easy task on a busy Saturday morning at Costco but we managed to avoid any meltdowns. So I would say it was a successful outing.

Visit to Emerald Glen Park

Friday, June 21, 2013

Now I have been noticing Iris giving real smiles and responding to my voice with cooing. I guess it’s about right, they say babies usually start smiling at you around five weeks old.

Iris refreshed after a bath.

Since it seems like she is getting more aware of her surroundings, I took out Simon’s old play mat to let her check it out. Guess who decides to try and play on it?

Today we met up with my parents for lunch but visited a park nearby first. We went to Emerald Glen Park which is one of the first parks listed when you search Yelp in Dublin. It was a beautiful and sunny day. Where’s Simon?

This is a pretty amazing park with the water feature. Next time we will bring more appropriate clothing for Simon. Most kids were wearing swimming clothes and Crocs. Iris stayed in the shade with mommy, grandma, and grandpa while Simon played in the water, sand, and slides with daddy.

Here is grandma Tam burping Iris.

Another little smile.

Almost overnight, Iris’ skin has cleared up. She still has a few red spots and dry skin but it is so much better compared to a few days ago and much smoother. Probably only a few more days until all the baby acne is gone and I won’t be afraid to irritate her skin by rubbing or kissing her cheeks!

No More Grapes

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

Yesterday, Iris had a rough day with a tummy full of gas. You could hear the bubbles rumbling in her tummy and she had loud burps and uncomfortable poops. The culprit? Red seedless grapes. It was the only unusual thing I ate the day before and in the morning. So I cut it out of my diet and so far, so good today. I hope we really did find the culprit. My little cupcake still has a bit of a mohawk after her bath a few days ago.

Have you ever seen a baby laugh and smile before falling asleep? I remember Simon laughing when he was already asleep but Iris will laugh and smile as she is dozing off. Her eyes will flutter open and closed. It’s brief though so hard to catch in a photo.

Today we took a trip to the park to pick up Simon from his camp. We went a bit early to take a nice stroll and get some fresh air. Here is Iris all ready to go!

During the car ride to the park, she fell asleep and continued to sleep until Simon finished with his camp. Here we are near the manmade lake.

Iris’ neck muscles are slowly getting stronger. Here she is lifting her head a bit during some tummy time. She ends up drooling a bit while on her tummy as she struggles to lift her little big head.

Love for my little boy’s inquisitive eyebrows.
