Day 223

Today is our last day in Southern California. Simon was itching to go, “let me out!”

We went to find ourselves some Taiwanese breakfast so ended up at Ye-May Restaurant which was recommended by a local. Ron loves his Taiwanese breakfast foods so was excited to try it. We ordered the egg crepe served with an actual sauce that was sort of like sweet soy with garlic. Very unlike our last trip when we went to Yung Ho and they gave us soy paste.

Ba-wan, my favorite. The minced stuff inside was yummy and much easier to eat than some places that use large chunks of bamboo and meats.

I always forget what this is called since I don’t like to eat it… it’s one of Ron’s favorites though.

He also liked it because it was “stuffed”, usually the ingredients are on top or a bit is distributed but this actually had a large amount of filling.

This was an interesting “sandwich” with preserved vegetables, peanuts, and meat. It seemed like they microwaved it though so wasn’t as fresh as the other stuff.

We ordered some rice rolls to go, one savory and one sweet. They are made fresh so are hot when you get them. Ron couldn’t resist and had to take a bite right away just to see if the fried dough stick inside was crunchy. The sweet one is a fried dough stick covered in sugar then wrapped with the rice.

This restaurant is much better than Yung Ho so visit Ye-May if you’re ever in San Gabriel and craving some Taiwanese breakfast.

After our breakfast, we drove over to Manhattan Beach to meet up with our friend Lynne and her daughter Kaylee. Simon look a little nap in the car with his Winnie the Pooh seatbelted in, safe and sound.

Little Kaylee is 2.5 months old. I’ve already forgotten how small and seemingly fragile babies are at this age. She was really well behaved during our lunch and super cute in her sleep. She would make the mouthing motions of sucking to show mommy she is hungry. “Baby smell” at this age is softer and sweeter than at Simon’s age. It was fun to meet her and chat with mommy Lynne. Don’t you just want to pinch those chubby cheeks?

We had lunch at a place called Islands at the mall which is sort of like Hawaiian Mexican (?). Tacos with Hawaiian seasoned insides.

We had a quick dessert of seasonal pumpkin cupcakes filled with cream cheese frosting.

Then had to rush to return our rental car and catch our flight home. We were almost going to be late but it ended up our flight was delayed so we made it on time. We sat next to the wing and engine again and Simon slept through most of the flight. He woke up during landing when we hit a bump but that was all. I hope flying is always this easy with him.

Simon is not eating much solid food these last few days. He only likes to eat puffs he can pick up with his own hands and avocado that I feed him. So tonight we finally decided to try some peas and corn. He didn’t enjoy pureed peas but we thought he might like picking up and eating an actual pea. He seemed okay with it but still wasn’t quite sure how to eat it. This is only a video of the peas (and sorry it is sideways, I forgot to flip the camera) and we added corn kernels later.

After our weekend away from home, Simon fell right to sleep in his own bed, hugging is pal Pooh.

Simon’s 1st vacation: Southern California – Day 4

Day 69

It is our last day in Southern California, our last day to enjoy some good Chinese/Taiwanese food.  It seemed like Simon had a good night’s rest so was active this morning.  He’s all smiles!

IMG_0117.JPG

This onesie is from Auntie Betty.  “I still live at home”… obviously!  But hilarious!

IMG_0123.JPG

For lunch we went to Arcadia to SinBala for some Taiwanese food.

IMG_0126.JPG

Their menu includes many variations of Chinese sausage.  We ordered one with basil (and some sweet sauce) and one with wasabi.  Basil was delicious.  Wasabi was interesting… but pretty good.

IMG_0124.JPG

IMG_0127.JPG

This is spicy dry wonton.  I didn’t like this because I didn’t think it had much flavor, just kind of bitter with red chili flakes.

IMG_0128.JPG

My favorite ba-wan.  Not enough filling in my opinion but decent.

IMG_0129.JPG

Green onion pancake.  Very crispy, yet oily.  Not much green onion flavor but the crispiness made up for it.

IMG_0130.JPG

I forget what this is called, a steamed dish with meat, mushrooms, boiled egg, and a salty sauce.  Ron’s favorite but not something I like that much.

IMG_0131.JPG

After lunch we went to visit  the California Institute of Technology since we had never been on the campus before.  I had seen it earlier off the freeway so just wanted to check it out.  When I was in high school, I really wanted to go there since I was getting really into computers and they had an excellent student to professor ratio.  Sadly I was rejected but it was all for the better.  Berkeley was great and it is where I met to love of my life and now we have Simon!

IMG_0133.JPG

An interesting feature at the school is this pond made up of stones from one of their old buildings.  It has turtles and koi plus a few ducks.  The turtles were coming out of the water to sunbathe as the weather was getting warmer.

photo.jpgIMG_0132.JPG

Our last stop before heading home was Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain in Pasadena.  The nerdy pharmacist in me just wanted to check out a traditional pharmacy and soda fountain.  It actually wasn’t what I expected.  The pharmacy is in one part of the store with a small OTC retail section.  The soda fountain is in the front, right at the street corner with a retail section of things like Curious George, Betty Boop, cards, books, candies, etc.  We decided to sit down anyways and have a malt shake: pistachio nut.  One shake was enough to split into two glasses so Ron and I shared.  It was nice and creamy, delicious fresh whipped cream, but not super spectacular and a bit expensive ($5.95).  Maybe I had my hopes too high.  But now I can saw I’ve been to a traditional pharmacy and soda fountain.

IMG_0136.JPG

We decided to leave in the afternoon since I think all of us were tired and ready to be home and rest.  Simon seems to do great in the car, I wonder how he will be on a plane?  That will be his next vacation when we go to Hawaii in October.

Simon’s 1st vacation: Southern California – Day 2

Day 67

We started out the day with some delicious pastries from Porto’s Bakery.  Since we missed out on lunch with Tiffany yesterday, she brought us some of their pastries to try.  It is a Cuban bakery.

IMG_0058.JPG

Top left: Cream cheese pastries (flaky crust and cream cheese not too sweet, yummy)

Top right: Some sort of fruit pastry, possibly rhubarb? (again, yummy flaky crust and not too sweet)

Bottom left: A chicken filled pastry, kind of like a mini pot pie but not too saucy

Bottom right: A potato ball filled with beef and beans, kind of like a burrito (good if you’re in the mood for savory)

IMG_0059.JPG

Simon got some tummy time while we were getting ready in the morning.  I didn’t realize this picture was a little blurry but I love the perspective, his head looks huge!

IMG_0068.JPG

We went to Fred Hess Jr. Community Park in Rancho Palos Verdes for Lynne and Joe’s baby shower.  It was really cute with a yellow ducky theme.  They received tons of gifts!  They are having a little girl and received a lot of clothes.  Little girl clothes are really cute so I can understand but I am glad I am not the one who has to cut off all the tags and wash them.  I think Simon already has enough clothes and the amount he has is nothing compared to how much they received.

Here is the beautiful mommy-to-be!

IMG_0072.JPG

Parting gifts included jelly beans and this cute ducky confection.

IMG_0091.JPG

After the shower, we headed to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro.  It’s actually a free aquarium with a suggested donation by visitors ($5 for adults) but not required.  It is on the small side but is pretty neat as they have quite a few exhibits and they “grow” food for their own creatures, that process is interesting as they have these tanks with each stage of growth.  The employees are also very helpful with providing information.

IMG_0076.JPG

I just got a kick out of this picture since Simon looks so perplexed.

IMG_0074.JPG

After the aquarium, we headed to Anaheim since I wanted to go to Downtown Disney.  Simon is too young for Disneyland so Downtown Disney is the closest we’ll get until he can enjoy Disneyland.  This is like a huge decorate-your-own Mickey.

IMG_0092.JPG

A very cute Mickey Mouse candied apple.  They also have a Minnie Mouse.

IMG_0094.JPG

At the World of Disney store.  Spider-man!

IMG_0096.JPG

Where’s Simon?  I love these round plushies.  We bought Simon the Tigger.

IMG_0097.JPG

The evening fireworks.

photo.jpg

Leaving Downtown Disney.  As you can see, Simon slept through most of the night.  When he sleeps, he really sleeps.  It seems like he’s been “going to bed” around 7-8pm and sleeping about 4 hours but then he’ll wake up, he’ll eat then only sleep 1-2 hours, wake up, eat, sleep 1-2 hours, etc until about 7am.

IMG_0100.JPG

Simon has been sucking on his thumb a bit too much and this was Ron’s solution to prevent him from doing it (those are socks).

Simon’s 1st vacation: Southern California – Day 1

Day 66

This is Simon’s first long distance trip by car.  Our friends Lynne and Joe are having a baby shower so we thought it a good time to see if we can travel with Simon.  It’ll be a four day experience.

We got on the road around 7am in hopes of meeting up with our friend Tiffany for lunch.  Simon is well fed, all dressed, and ready to go.  We didn’t realize how much more stuff we needed to bring with a baby (ie, his clothes, diapers, wipes, toys, blankets, bath soap, etc).

IMG_0045.JPG

Although he looked wide awake, he soon fell asleep in the car and slept almost the entire way there.  We only needed to stop once to fuel the car and another time to change his diaper.  We had brought enough milk for the trip and I was pumping in the car so whenever he woke up, I just bottle fed him.

IMG_0051.JPG

Unfortunately we did leave a little later than anticipated so didn’t make it in time to Los Angeles to meet up with Tiffany so we went to try something ourselves: Phillipe’s French Dip Sandwiches.  We had seen it on the Travel Channel as a place you must try in LA.  The lines weren’t as long as we anticipated so that was good but I was bad and didn’t order correctly.  Apparently you have to specify that you want your sandwich “dipped” and you can ask for “single” or “double”.  I assumed that they would at least give you the “au jus” on the meat itself or dip at least one piece of the bun into the sauce… but nope, just the meat on the bread and the hot mustard at the tables.  Oh well… we had one lamb, one beef, and a side of cole slaw.  The hot mustard was great, really spicy but the sandwiches were okay.  It might have tasted better with the sauce but not sure how much better.

IMG_0053.JPG

After our lunch, we went to meet up with Tiffany at this store called Japan LA.  They have lots of Hello Kitty items and other cute things like Tokidoki and Crowded Teeth.

IMG_0056.JPG

After shopping we went to a restaurant nearby to have some coffee and chat.  The place was kind of unprofessional.  First we told them we just wanted coffee and/or shakes, no food, and they said fine and to sit down.  When Ron wanted to order a shake then they told him the blender was broken.  When the waiter went back to check, apparently the blender was fixed but they were out of ice cream.  I wanted an amaretto latte but they were out of amaretto.  What the heck?!? I ended up ordering a hazelnut latte, Ron a raspberry iced tea, and Tiffany a soy latte.  The waiter brought Ron a regular iced tea then realized so brought the raspberry iced tea.  Tiffany was afraid they messed up her drink and used regular milk but we confirmed it was indeed soy.  So not such a good experience but we got a funny picture out of it.  Simon was being fussy and wanted to eat but for some reason would only start to eat while in this position:

IMG_0057.JPG

For the evening, we headed to Torrance as we were staying at a Marriott Courtyard there using reward points.  The baby shower is tomorrow and is in Rancho Palos Verdes so this was the closest hotel in the area.  We also had to find a place for dinner and while searching Yelp, I came across this Taiwanese place called Ju Ju Shine.  It had rave reviews so we thought we’d check it out.

Here is their menu:

photo.jpg

photo.jpg

The lady owner suggested how we should order since Ron wanted this ground pork over rice dish, apparently the “rice” for the combination is that special ground pork over rice dish so it was a better deal to order the combination… not sure if that makes sense but if you go there, I’m sure she will help you.  They also have stinky tofu there even though it is not on the menu.

They also have some older Japanese comic books for you to peruse (if you can read Japanese) and when Tiffany first met Simon, she thought that he resembled this character.

photo.jpg

This is some sort of soy sauce chicken served with three kinds of vegetables: lightly pickled cucumbers, stir fried cabbage/carrots, and preserved vegetables.  The soup is some sort of vegetable broth that was really good.  Then the special ground pork rice with boiled egg that Ron likes.

photo.jpg

An order of their stinky tofu.  Smelled authentic and was really tasty.  The tofu kind of had air pockets in it so soaked up the sauce really well.  The outside was nice and crispy and the rest a bit chewy.

photo.jpg

One of my favorite noodle dishes, Check-R noodles.  It’s very simple, just rice noodles in a broth with a boiled egg, some shredded pork, bean sprouts, cilantro, green onions, and fried onions.

photo.jpg

We finished everything but were pretty stuffed.  All this was less than $20 and she even gave us two ba-wan to go.  It is a quaint little restaurant and I’m sure if we lived close by, we would frequent it often.

After dinner, we went back to our hotel and tucked Simon into bed.  Our hotel room had two Queen beds so Simon has a bed all to himself.

IMG_0062.JPG

We had requested a portable crib and it ended up being a Graco Pack’n’Play with no sheets and no bassinet so we opted to have him be more comfortable on the bed.  It’s been a long day of traveling so we are all exhausted.

Dai Ho, Half & Half, SinBala, Santa Monica, Puppies

A day of eating, drinking, shopping, and spending time with friends and puppies.

The day starts out with lunch at Dai Ho Restaurant in Temple City with a few of Ron’s friends. I was a bit shocked by the prices as a bowl of noodles was almost $10. The noodles and soup were good but I’m not sure if it was worth $10.

This small plastic container of spicy cucumbers were $4. They were really good though, nicely pickled and spicy… but $4?!

The beef noodle soup.

The minced pork noodles, spicy, for Ron.

Maybe I’m not as familiar with Taiwanese food as I thought but I wasn’t really wowed by this restaurant but check out the reviews on Yelp! for other opinions.

Next stop, pearl tea. Ron’s friend suggested Half & Half Tea House in San Gabriel. I ordered a rose black tea with pearls. It’s served in this huge glass with tons of ice, it really hit the spot on this hot day. Their pearls were pretty good, sweet and chewy (rather than bland and paste-like).

Next stop, to see 5-day old Boston Terrier pups. Both boys and oh so cute! Their eyes are still closed and they can’t really stand yet so they just squirm around like furry worms.

In the evening, we went to Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade to walk around. We did a bit of shopping and took a quick rest at Pinkberry. We missed Pinkberry on our last visit so wanted to make sure we got to it this time. Although I think that Yogurtland is better since it’s self-serve versus the servers at Pinkberry dictate how much topping you get and there are only limited flavors at Pinkberry.

This is original frozen yogurt with granola, mango, and strawberries.

The most exciting thing of the evening is that we saw Pierce Brosnan at Barnes & Nobles! He was there with his family so I didn’t think it appropriate to bother him although there were some young girls deciding if they should ask for his autograph and their father was helping them… I’m not sure the outcome since we walked away. But that’s the first time I’ve ever seen a movie star in real life. I think the most famous TV star I’ve interacted with was when I was around 12 years old and met Martin Yan and have a photo and autograph with him!

Anyways, after Santa Monica, we headed back to the hotel for some dinner and we had to get some shut eye since our flight is at 6am.

Before we went to Santa Monica, we had stopped by SinBala Restaurant to get some take out. We had heard during our previous trip that the shaved ice was good but we were still stuffed with lunch and tapioca pearls that we just ordered a few things for dinner later and some fresh made sausages to bring back to SF.

We ordered a few ba-wan which we found to be very delicious. Not just all starchy and chewy like most, it actually had quite a bit of filling with pork, mushrooms, and bamboo shoots. There was only one sauce, a red one (usually it’s a white and red one), but it was still good.

I forgot what this one is called since I usually don’t like it. It’s a sort of paste that has meat and mushrooms mixed in. I usually don’t like it because there’s too much “paste” and not enough stuff mixed in but this was different, much better than usual.

So ends our trip to Southern California. Tomorrow we fly back early and I go straight to work.
