Neecha Thai Cuisine

Our friends were visiting from LA so they invited us to join them for dinner this past Saturday. Funny enough, the restaurant they chose is about 3 blocks from where I work but I’ve never been there. They used to live in the area so they said it was their favorite Thai restaurant in the city.

Ron and I shared three dishes. First up was the “muk krob” which is a deep-fried battered calamari cooked in a secret house sauce with crispy red onions and topped with deep-fried Thai basil. It was crispy, sweet, sour, gooey… yummy! You probably wouldn’t have known it was calamari but the sauce was so good, I don’t think anyone would care.

Special eggplant: eggplant, prawns, chicken and pork sauteed with jalepeno peppers, red bell peppers and Thai basil in a secret house sauce. I love most eggplant dishes and this was no exception.

Moo Gratiem: BBQ pork marinated in Thai herbs and garlic served with a spicy chili sauce. This was a bit too sweet for me but not bad overall.

I would definitely go back there again, it was quite reasonable for the amount of food we had. For our three dishes plus rice, I think it came to $35. We were stuffed.

They also have a location in Oakland, see their website for more info.

Taiwan Restaurant Take 2

This weekend, we visited Taiwan Restaurant once again for breakfast. Ordered some of the old and some new things.

You tiao, fried dough stick. It was kind of cold and a bit chewy..

Ron contemplating the rest of the menu…

Something known as a petal bun, Ron says it’s hard to make since it’s flaky and requires a lot of lard to make it. He says he wasn’t very good though. I don’t like them so didn’t try it.

Hot soy milk with sugar being added.

A bowl of noodles with some ground meat, bean sprouts, and the tea egg. The tea egg was the best part.

Green onion pancake, looked deep fried rather than pan fried. Nice and hot, a bit chewy so was nice.

I think we’re learning we don’t like this Taiwan Restaurant as much as the one in Berkeley for some reason. So I’m not sure if we’ll be coming back again unless we really have a desperate craving.

Frascati

We enjoyed a Friday night dinner with our friends Kat and Jon. They made reservations at a restaurant close to their apartment in Russian Hill, Frascati.

The atmosphere of the restaurant was bustling yet quaint and a good place for a romantic dinner or a small intimate group. We had a table upstairs which has a low ceiling but was nice as it seemed more private than downstairs.

For an appetizer, I ordered the Bison carpaccio. The meat was very thinly sliced albeit maybe a bit too thin. It was hard to pick up the slices as it would break apart very easily. A very nice presentation.

For the main course, I ordered the duck breast with herb spactzle, arugula, hearts of palm, scallions, and huckleberry sauce. Kat ordered the same thing and with first bite, we both tasted an odd “liver-like” flavor. We asked our waiter about how it was prepared and all he could tell us is that it was marinated in lemon juice for 2 days and would check with the chef. He came back telling us that there was no liver in the sauce… the chef probably thought we were crazy. The duck breast with the crispy skin on it was the best piece.

Ron had the striped bass. I only had a small bite and from what I tasted, I didn’t really enjoy it, it had the taste of the ocean still.

Although the restaurant has a nice atmosphere, the food wasn’t spectacular and a bit on the expensive side. It probably doesn’t help that it’s in Russian Hill and on the cable car line, so maybe a bit touristy. We shared one bottle of wine and it was $100 for each couple for dinner.

I’m glad we went though since we found a few other restaurants on the same street that we’d like to try. Plus there was a Swensen’s ice cream shop up the street where we bought some dessert.

Afterwards we went to their apartment for ice cream and brownies. Kat has a great way of making brownies in a cupcake/muffin pan so that they are individual servings AND the entire edge is crunchy and chewy! No need for me to buy that Edge Brownie Pan I keep on seeing on Amazon. She also puts a chocolate non pareil in the center of each brownie so the center comes out nice and gooey. Can’t wait to try this out for my next set of brownies….

Darbar – Lunch Delivery

We had Indian food delivered to work for lunch. One our nurses really wanted to try this restaurant called Darbar.

I had heard that the wraps were good so I ordered the seekh kebab wrap but in hindsight, I should have ordered the chicken one. I’d forgotten that their beef kebabs are ground meat put on a skewer then cooked on the rotisserie. I didn’t like the texture of the meat. The wrap was also a bit soggy since I didn’t have time to eat it right when it was delivered. It probably would taste a lot better eaten at the restaurant. Their mint and tamarind sauces were yummy though.

I ordered the mango lassi and although quite fluorescent in color, it actually had a good flavor. In real life, it sort of looked like kool aid orange color. They probably use some strained mango puree rather than blending their own mangoes because I didn’t detect any pulp in the drink.

The wrap was $6.99 and the drink was $1.99 and delivered free.

In trying to look for their restaurant website, I found a site called GrubHub which lets you looks up restaurants that deliver… kind of cool. Here is the menu for Darbar.
