Williams Sonoma Bear Cake Pan – Attempt #2

See my first attempt here.

Today is my co-worker Patsy’s birthday so a good excuse for me to try the cake pan again. This time I followed the recipe on the box but I came across the same problem that I read about on the Williams Sonoma website, there didn’t seem enough batter. The batter only came up about an inch less from the top so I was afraid it wasn’t going to bake “up” enough. I quickly made a box of carrot cake mix and added another 1/2 inch of batter, it seemed more dense, so it kind of sank into the other batter…

After baking for 1 hr 20 minutes, it finally cooked all the way through (the box says 45 to 55 minutes). The cake had puffed way up! Next time, I’ll just trust the box recipe… or maybe try brownie or fudge? Hmmm…

It cooled overnight, I used peanut butter frosting from my peanut butter & jelly cupcakes (that I had been keeping for an occasion like this) as the “glue” and filler for the cake. I accidentally cut a bit of its nose and tail off when I was trimming the cake. After I glued the two halves together, it went into the refrigerator for 30 minutes then I glazed it with a mixture of powdered sugar (1 cup), cocoa powder (1 tsp), and milk (2 Tbsp). Then used dark brown sugar to coat Mr. Bear.

He’s still not all the pretty but there’s always a next time… but it’s not as bad as what Patsy did to it… as the knife approaches the bear…

Oh no!

The head to take home and the body to eat at work… not sure how well you can see but the darker carrot cake in the middle and the pound cake surrounding it.

Happy Birthday Patsy!

Hong Kong Clay Pot Restaurant

Had dinner in SF Chinatown this weekend at Hong Kong Clay Pot Restaurant. We ordered three dishes:

Salt & Pepper Shrimp

Ong choy stir fried with green chilies and fermented bean curd

Oxtail clay pot

The oxtail clay pot was the best dish of the meal. The sauce was very yummy over rice and the oxtail meat was tender and surrounded by well marinated tendons and fat. Probably not very healthy but delicious if you like oxtail.

After dinner I cheated on my cats and hung out with two other cats. This is Macintosh who is the friendlier of the two. He took a cat nap with me and came eagerly with the shake of the cat treat package.

This is SpyderCat, the more aloof of the two but he also sat next to me while I was watching TV and was grooming himself. I found his sitting position quite funny, like he was trying to sit like humans do (when in actuality, it was so he could groom his stomach).

Monsters vs Aliens

Ron and I went to see Monsters vs Aliens in 3D! I can’t remember the last time I saw a 3D movie… this was a great experience! Some of the previews were 3D showcasing some of their upcoming movies… now I can’t wait to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (who wouldn’t want food dropping from the sky) and Up (a cranky old man can be cute).

We went to the Century 20 in Daly City and since I think it was the early bird matinee $6 + $3 for the 3D, our tickets were only $9 each. A bargain considering…

After the movie, we had ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery. We had the OREO Overload Signature Creation in a waffle bowl… sweet cream ice cream, chocolate chips, double OREO cookies, and fudge.

Yum!

Am I allowed to have a “favorite” cat?

If I am allowed to have a favorite cat, that would be Misu. He’s not the typical cat, he always craves attention and won’t shun you like other cats would. He sits next to me as I write this post, like he knows that I’m talking about him. Now he’s trying to jump on my lap…

Last night after we got home from dinner, he was talking to us because he wanted one of us to pet him. I picked him up and started rubbing his tummy and scratching his face.

He’s really got a motor purr that won’t stop as long as you keep on scratching him.

He’s always around to make me smile… but then he’s always around when I’m busy too… but at least it’s more of the former than of the latter.
