No Naps

Thursday, August 22, 2013

If Simon doesn’t take his afternoon nap, then those are the days I need a nap! Yesterday he napped about 15-20 minutes in the car and today he didn’t nap at all even though he complained he was tired. I would be okay with him stopping his naps if he is ready but he gets really fussy so I don’t think he’s ready to quit them just yet.

He was a bit frustrating today and overall just disagreeable. He hit me on the hand, he drew on the wall with permanent marker, he cried at the playground, and he fell asleep on the car ride to swim class but woke up to walk into the pool before deciding he didn’t want to swim then we had to go home. Then when we got to the car, he said he wanted to go back to class (but we left).

The playground incident might have been just because he was scared but he was screaming and crying extremely loudly which is not the norm. He’s still trying to figure out how to interact with other kids so maybe he was also frustrated and a bit lonely.

He’s really attached to us and doesn’t like to self play much. He will sometimes when we are busy cooking but otherwise wants us to hang out with him. Tonight he and Ron searched the Internet for LEGO instructions to build a train. He was really happy. He’s recently been really into building with LEGOs.

Iris seems to like yellow colored toys. On her play mat, she likes this butterfly with a yellow head.

I’m tired today… I hope tomorrow will be a better day.

Crafter in the Making

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

Last week, we used my circle and square craft punches to make paper cookies and crackers for Simon’s kitchen. Today he wanted to make popcorn so we used a flower punch. He likes using the punch himself. Future crafter!

20130821-203124.jpg
We went to Blackhawk Plaza again today for the Radio Disney event and the theme today was the kids’ show Phineas and Ferb.

20130821-203304.jpg
We stuck around to have lunch, picking up some stuff from the deli section of the nearby grocery store. Here are the kiddos with our nanny Annie.

20130821-203441.jpg
Then we went to feed the ducks.

20130821-203546.jpg
There were a few ducklings swimming around.

20130821-203633.jpg
The ducks were more eager for food today. They walked right up to us without fear.

Simon with his gentle smile.

20130821-203750.jpg
Then we stopped by Grandma Tam’s house to try some yellow watermelon. Sweet and refreshing!

Iris holding into her bottle. Her little grip is getting strong. She likes to hold onto my necklace and hair. Also she can grab ahold of her musical toys that require a tug on a ring to make the music play.

Some updates!

Sunday, August 18:
We made a trip to Costco for lunch and grocery shopping. Simon eagerly ate half a hot dog and some frozen yogurt. Iris could only longingly look on.

20130819-074948.jpg
At checkout, Simon helped Ron to load the conveyor with all our stuff. It’s the first time I’ve seen him insist on helping and not wanting to sit in the shopping cart.

20130819-075137.jpg
Shopping was too exhausting for Iris so she took a little nap.

20130819-075236.jpg
She only takes little cat naps so was wide awake for most of the afternoon. Playing on her play mat. Love her smiles.

20130819-075411.jpg
She is starting to be interested in the mirror. I’m not sure if she recognizes it is her reflection but she seems happy to see herself and me in the mirror.

After dinner napping, holding my hand.

Monday, August 19:
Simon and I took a trip into Berkeley to check out a children’s museum called Habitot. Although not huge, Simon seemed to enjoy himself and got to interact with other kids.

They have a cafe and grocery store area with play food, cash registers, shopping carts, menus, and cooking supplies.

Talking on a banana phone!

20130821-031634.jpg
There is a water play area with water tables, a water pump and pretend car wash with different Cozy Coupes.

Currently the museum only open 9:30am-12:30pm on weekdays but that’s plenty of time to do all the activities. There’s also a face painting area and train table. It’s a bit expensive at $10 for adults and $8 for kids but plenty fun for little kids. Seems like a lot of nannies with their charges and they mostly have membership and come everyday. We are unlikely to go back but good for a one day excursion.

We had our picnic lunch at some benches near a bus stop. Simon got to see lots of different cars and trucks pass us by. His “chooozzz” face.

20130821-032832.jpg
We went for some frozen yogurt afterwards.

20130821-032930.jpg
By the time we got home, he was pooped out and fell asleep easily for his nap.

Silly Simon playing with his afternoon snack of raspberries. He really likes them.

Tuesday, August 20:
Simon and Iris hanging out underneath the stars. Iris really liked Simon’s tent with the constellation sheet.

20130821-033636.jpg
Our outing today was to Crab Cove Visitor Center in Alameda. I found this activity through the East Bay Parks and Rec called Sea Squirts where they have a themed activity almost every Tuesday. Cost is $5. Today’s theme was the smells of nature.

20130821-033744.jpg
I think Simon enjoyed screaming with the other kids versus listening to the naturalist. We went outside to explore the herbs and the water. It’s actually a pretty nice place for sand and water play especially on a beautiful day like it was today. The kids smelled seaweed, checked out some sand bugs, and just explored.

Afterward we had our picnic and walk on the trail. The craft project of the day was a paper flower which he is holding in his hand as we walk.

20130821-034504.jpg
We made a quick stop into Oakland Chinatown to pick up some boba drinks. First we stopped by the Pacific Renaissance Plaza water fountain so Simon could check out the koi fish. He insisted I take a picture of his back.

20130821-034736.jpg
But still got one of his face, just making his favorite “chooozz” sound.

20130821-034823.jpg
Yummy Sweetheart Cafe boba drinks! Simon had watermelon and I got avocado. As you can see, Simon loves his drink, he drank half just walking the 2-3 blocks to the car.

20130821-034911.jpg
Iris always has smiles for me when we get home.

20130821-035129.jpg
And giggles. My phone ran out of memory hence the abrupt ending.

Short Road Trip

Saturday, August 17, 2013

Today Ron took Simon on a tour with his Bay Area Reefers (BAR) group to a clam research facility.

Iris and I took a short road trip to visit Auntie Betty in Millbrae. Iris did really well on the ride there and back, even with the bit of traffic we hit. She didn’t cry at all and put herself to sleep. I was a little nervous about her fussing about being in the car seat so long. But she a pleasantly surprised me by being very calm and peaceful. She enjoyed getting out to stretch though.

20130818-103254.jpg
She even took a nap while at their place. It probably helped they have a nice cushy comforter.

20130818-103341.jpg
Uncle Henry came home after work and played with Iris.

20130818-103441.jpg
She seems to really like Uncle Henry and was all smiles. Maybe she is already liking boys!

I love this backseat mirror for baby. It’s very clear so that I can actually see what’s going on in the backseat. She looks content to me!

UC Botanical Garden

Friday, August 16, 2013

Simon and Iris admiring each other this morning.

20130817-013452.jpg
Today we visited the UC Botanical Garden. It’s been over 10 years since I’ve been there when I had to go for a class field trip. Since Simon likes flowers and tree branches, I thought he might find it interesting. Iris was a pretty good girl through our visit, riding in her stroller.

20130817-013713.jpg
But the gardens are better seen by walking. There are paved paths but some are steep and hard to maneuver. There are also lots of narrow paths and steps to see the more interesting places. So if we come back, I will bring Iris in the Ergo so we can see more. It took Simon a little while to warm up to the idea of the gardens but he seemed to enjoy looking around and walking all these different twist and turns.

20130817-014121.jpg
We stopped by the lawn area to have a little snack. I laid out a blanket for Iris under a tree and she really enjoyed watching the branches and leaves sway above her. It was the perfect temperature with a light breeze. She was wiggling around happily.

20130817-014442.jpg
Big brother Simon joined her on the lawn after exploring the Chinese Medicinal Herb Garden with Annie. He’s snacking on a pear that we brought. It was around 12pm so he was hungry and ate a lot of fruit and cookies.

20130817-014741.jpg
Simon enjoys picking things up off the ground like branches, nuts, pine cones, and leaves.

20130817-014851.jpg
The gardens have lots of beautiful flowers and interesting little creatures.

20130817-014936.jpg

20130817-014944.jpg
Before we left to get a real lunch, we stopped by the redwood grove. Simon loved walking the paths, up and down and around.

20130817-015205.jpg
A little rest and drink of water before we leave.

20130817-015249.jpg
We had a late lunch and arrived home about 3pm but Simon did not want to nap. So I let him stay up but eventually he got quite fussy and disagreeable. We were reading books and he asked me to kiss him (which I thought was so sweet) then he asked if he could kiss me (which he did) the proceeded to stick his finger into my eye near the lower lid and scratch me with his fingernail. He got a timeout and things went downhill from there until he finally decided to calm down and want a snack. Which led to this:

20130817-015654.jpg
This was about 6pm. Ron moved him from the kitchen table and he whined a little bit about wanting his stuffed animal but before Ron could even get it, he passed out again.

20130817-015802.jpg
Soon after, Iris followed suit.

20130817-015838.jpg
So we had a quiet dinner, just Ron and me. Iris woke up right after we finished eating but Simon is out cold for the night. Ron carried him to his room eventually and he didn’t even wake up. I guess I did a good job of getting him to expend his excess energy!
