Go Niners! and Simon Selfies

Monday, November 25, 2013

Iris wearing her Niners gear for game day! Thanks to Uncle Eric for the onesies!

Simon learned how to take a selfie using the front facing camera on my phone. He hasn’t quite got the aim yet so here is the best one.

Simon felt a lot better today and went to school. His lunch for the day: whole wheat tortilla quesadilla filled with cheese and ham, carrots, cucumbers, and clementines.

Today they had a show and tell kind of day where they brought a toy to show the other kids how to play with it. Their current lesson is about “play”: how to play, rules for play, what you can play with, etc. Simon brought his Ziggy but decided not to show how to play with him because he didn’t want Ziggy to get dirty. So instead he showed the others how to play with a paper airplane. He can’t fold his own paper airplane yet but tonight he showed off his paper cutting skills. So concentrated.

He cut squares then strips. He is so careful holding those scissors while cutting but not so careful when not concentrating on the actual cutting.

Yesterday I missed photographing a milestone. Iris has her third tooth! Plus maybe a fourth on the way. It’s on her upper jawline. In the picture below, it’s on the right side and there seems to be another one coming out to the right of it (rather than to the left that I’m used to seeing so she might have a offset toothy smile).

This is when an actual camera is needed. My iPhone camera takes too long to focus on moving objects then tends to take a blurry photo. It might be time for me to just update my phone.

Making Baby Food and Simon Sick Day

Sunday, November 24, 2013

Today I made two batches of baby food to freeze. Apples and sweet potatoes. First I peeled and cut everything and put them in the steamer and put the lid on. These are the apples.

20131126-005618.jpg
After about 20 minutes, the water that you put around the pan (kind of like a double boiler) evaporates and the fruit or vegetable become super soft.

20131126-005746.jpg
After mashing with a whisk, I put it into a mini brownie bites silicone pan and into the freezer.

20131126-010122.jpg
After a few hours, I pop out the frozen pieces into a labeled ziplock bag for later use. I microwave a few cubes for 20-25 seconds. Iris can eat 2-3 little frozen cubes. Here are the sweet potatoes. So much better than jarred or pouch baby food!

Iris practicing drinking water with a straw cup. She can suck a little up but sometimes it dribbles out of her mouth when she doesn’t form a tight seal. She likes chewing on the straw.

Iris loves her uncles! This onesie from Uncle Henry and Auntie Betty.

Simon had a stay at home sick day today. He had a cough and was generally tired out. He had some diphenhydramine (Benadryl) in the morning for the cough and possible allergies and slept all morning. He got plenty of rest and hung out with Ron all day. Storytime:

Then bedtime for more rest and recovery. Plenty of water too.

I hope Simon gets better soon!

Saturday at Oakland Zoo

Saturday, November 23, 2013

We have made good use of our Oakland Zoo membership since we go quite often. Simon especially loves the Children’s playground area inside and the rides outside. He likes the animals sometimes too. Like the turtles!

20131124-050627.jpg
Iris and I went walking around by ourselves and explored the zoo.

20131124-050711.jpg
I thought she would be interested by the giraffes.

20131124-050738.jpg
But no, not really. She was more interested by the ducks in the water near the giraffes. Oh well.

20131124-050852.jpg
We also saw baboons, elephants, and zebras. By the end, I was tired of walking and she was knocked out.

20131124-050956.jpg
Yesterday, Iris tried rice with carrots and didn’t like it. Today I mixed it with some banana and she happily chomped away. She’s already got a little bit of a sweet tooth. At least it’s natural sweetness and not with added sugar.

Almost mobile! Check out Iris’ upper body strength.

Simon and Ron had a Daddy and Son afternoon at the movies. They went to see Freebirds. When they got home, I asked Simon what the movie was about and he said the “birds were fighting”. That’s all he would say to describe it. Sometimes he gives me a good description of a movie and I think it depends if he liked it or not. I think today he was more excited about the popcorn, lemonade, and gummi bears he got during the movie.

Tonight was our first experience ordering delivery from the iPhone Yelp app from Sushi Ko Restaurant. It’s powered by Eat24. I’ll say it’s convenient but it took longer than expected. They have live chat/order status but they give an unrealistic wait time. I think it ended up at least an hour and 15 minutes to be delivered. The time estimate was 45-60 minutes. I had a live chat with Eat24 at the 45 minute mark and they said the driver was on their way so only another 5-10 minutes but that ended up being way off so we were all hungry. Henry and Betty were over to have dinner with us so I got some free babysitting :). The food was pretty good overall and well packaged and detailed. They didn’t mess up anything and detailed in that all items were compartmentalized so no flavors mixed. I’d eat at this restaurant again but maybe not with takeout. They are also on Opentable so that might be a better option for us so we wouldn’t need to wait for first come-first serve.

Friday Night at Pyramid Brewery

Friday, November 22, 2013

Happy morning Iris.

Our little princess.

Simon’s lunch today of chicken and cucumber sushi, cucumbers, and Bosc bear. Pretty simple to make this sushi and Simon ate it all!

20131124-044626.jpg

Friday night has become the evening we go out for dinner and try a new restaurant. So far we’ve only had one family unfriendly restaurant that we had to leave and get Church’s chicken to bring home instead. Tonight we went to Pyramid Alehouse and Brewery. Simon and Ron making silly faces.

20131124-044937.jpg
Me with Iris.

20131124-045037.jpg

Iris was quite interested in my apricot ale. She kept on grabbing at the glass and trying to put her mouth on it. She’s getting stronger and can really pull hard towards her. I think she thought this was her bottle filled with her favorite color liquid (yellow) so was just really curious about it. I had a hard time taking a sip without her hitting at the glass.

Overall we had a good time with good, fast service and decent food with good portions. Easy parking with their own parking lot which is a big plus with little kids. I’m sure we will be back.

I Love Apples!

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Hello Kitty loves apples.

20131122-060917.jpg
And so does Iris! Yum yum!

20131122-060952.jpg
Fresh “shaved” applesauce.

20131122-061019.jpg
Today we used our microplane zester to shave the apple. No need to cook to make it soft or purée it. After her first spoonful of applesauce, she grabbed Annie’s hand to keep the spoon in her mouth. At dinner, I experienced first hand how much she loves apples when she would eagerly open her mouth when she saw the spoonful coming and excitedly suck on the spoon to get every last bit. I’m glad she has at least one favorite food for now. Let’s hope she has more!

Serious Simon. Like father like son, hardly cold, wearing tank top and shorts on the rainy wet day. It’s not super cold but windy so there’s no way Simon would go outside like this.

20131122-061657.jpg
Simon’s lunch: pizza rolls, Asian pear, carrots, broccoli, banana chips, dried cranberries, Ritz crackers, and mini Oreos.

20131122-061903.jpg

Iris practicing crawling. I’m happy she’s never been one to complain about bring on her tummy. She happily rolls from front to back and back to front. She still tips over but at least lands on soft carpet.
