Makansutra Glutton’s Bay at Esplanade

Friday Foody tonight was at Makansutra Glutton’s Bay next to the Esplanade. Makansutra is apparently a company that showcases Singapore’s food. They produce a guidebook, TV shows, a website, mobile services, etc. Glutton’s Bay is also their venture where they gathered some hawker stall owners and brought them to the place next to the Esplanade.

It’s only made up of 12 stalls and I have to say it wasn’t that impressive to me. Sort of more expensive than normal hawker center food in a nicer setting.

They did have a few interest things like your own personal BBQ with your choice of meats and you could also have steamboat/hotpot.

I like the BBQ pot they provide though… be cool for home.

This is pork. Fatty with a bit of bone.

They had satay.

Roti John – some sort of meat inside with onion and cheese, with mayo and chili on top. A bit like a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich.

Oyster pancake – unlike the Taiwanese type, it’s more of a stir fried oyster omlette rather than a pancake.

Carrot green apple juice. Very refreshing but a bit expensive, SGD$2.50

This was part of dessert for the evening, ice kachung. Basically roughly shaved ice with syrups, sweet corn, red beans, palm seeds, and other jellies inside. You have to dig to find the good stuff at the bottom.

We ended up at the Esplanade at one of the cafes for gelato. It was a bit expensive too, SGD$4 per scoop. The one on the left is cherry raspberry and the one on the right is cappuccino.

So overall, it was only okay. There was live music which was nice and it was nice and cool by the water. A bit on the more expensive side but very clean food center. I was happy to see a kitty wandering around underneath the tables.

I’m tired after a long day at work so we decided not to join the others on their evening adventures. I think I need to get a little more sleep this weekend.

Cancer Centre Pharmacists Dinner Discussion at Canele

Our Cancer Centre Pharmacists are starting these discussions at least once a month to talk about updates in the pharmacy world. Tonight’s discussion was about the IDSA Guidelines for treatment of invasive aspergillosis.

IDSA = Infectious Diseases Society of America

We thought it a good idea to go have a nice dinner and have our discussion. We went to Canele at Paragon for yummy crepes and desserts while Peai Tean showed us some slides and presented the information. We had a lively discussion and also some great dessert.

Raspberry, Hazelnut, and Pistachio Macaroons

Chocolate-something cake

Roasted chicken crepe with fig

Chocolate hazelnut cake with gold leaf

Peai Tean showing us fungal pneumonia on a chest x-ray.

It was a good informational session and discussion and we hope to do it more often. I volunteered to talk about antiemetic use for chemotherapy and methotrexate pharmacokinetics. I am lucky to have learned all this while working at UCSF so I’m glad to be able to share with my new colleagues.

Funan DigitaLife Mall and fresh prawns

Today we went on a search for a new laptop for Ron. First though we went to Raffles City Shopping Center for lunch. We ended up at Chippy British Take Away. We ordered the beer battered fish with fries and the cheesy spicy chicken.

The beer battered fish pieces were quite small, maybe 2 to 3 inches in length and 1 inch wide. It was hard to differentiate between the fish and fries. Also it is only served with one small cup of sauce. You can choose either malt vinegar or ketchup/mayonnaise. It costs extra if you want another serving of condiments.

The cheesy spicy chicken wasn’t very spicy. But the cheesy sauce that comes with it is pretty good… kind of like nacho chicken… the sauce is good with the fries from the fish. We think they overfried it a bit because the pieces were too crunchy.

We ate around the fountain in the basement. It was nice but I wish they had a more comfortable seating area for take away food.

Afterwards we got some coffee at Starbucks and I have to comment that the Raffles City Starbucks seems to always have poor service. This Starbucks is close to my Chinese class so I stop by sometimes for coffee. One time they completely forgot to make my drink, just a grande latte, nothing fancy. They served the 5 or 6 customers after me before I had to remind them of my drink and they made it for me. The guys there tried to be nice and make conversation with me but I was already irritated so it was no use. That was one incident.

Today we ordered and they were serving drinks to customers who came in after us as well… especially all the cold or ice drinks came up first but the hot drinks took longer. Plus the person helping with the cold drinks was expediting drinks for customers who had ordered both cold and hot drinks versus serving customers who ordered hot drinks only. Quite irritating again. I know I ordered something that takes a bit longer, a tall soy latte, because of the soy but still it does not make sense that 3 customers behind us get their drinks served first. They don’t seem to have a good system of making their drinks in order and they don’t even ask the customers for their names. The cashiers don’t write the orders down for the barista but rather call out the orders to the barista and the barista has to stop and write the order down. Doesn’t seem very efficient to me. In the US, Starbucks is much more efficient and seem much more organized.

At the VivoCity Starbucks I’ve had the same experience of them being extremely slow. Everyone is crowding around the counter waiting for their drinks. If the cashier took the time to write the orders on the cup, the queue of people waiting for their drinks would be shorter because it delays people from paying too quickly. They really need to find a way to balance the workflow out. It can be quite irritating for customers.

I have not had any problems at Coffee Bean so far, this is one of the reasons I think I prefer Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf now.

After our coffee incident, we went shopping at Funan DigitaLife Mall to get some ides for Ron’s new laptop. I also got to see some cool things like small tablet PCs, Apple computers, etc. I don’t think Ron has decided on a computer yet but at least has a better idea on the features available.

We just had dinner of our freshly caught prawns from yesterday. We had two types: steamed and stir fried.

Both quite yummy, very fresh.

It’s been quite a nice weekend…

Farmart Prawning

It was a dreary raining day in Singapore today but Ron had already planned an outing to go try prawning. There are a few places here in Singapore where you can try to catch prawns. He chose to go to Farmart. It cost $13SGD to rent a fishing pole for 1 hr or $26SGD for 3 hours. They include all the bait. You can also BBQ there and they provide the charcoal and all the stuff to start the fire.

We went there pretty late, around 7pm. We were surprised to find that the place also has other things besides prawning, there seems to be petting zoos of sorts with goats and also birds. I was thought of one of our friends who is now in France who would’ve loved to see the birds. They also have a food court and a few restaurants there.

Ron and I were a bit early so we rented one fishing pole first. The bait they provide are frozen clams, called cockles in Singapore. They have these small chopping boards to cut up the bait and also provide the baskets to hold your bounty.

I luckily caught one in the first 20 minutes of prawning… but for the whole night, as a group, we only caught five! A bit pathetic… but it was our first time, need practice. A man kindly gave us his catch though so we had quite a few to bring home. There was a couple that was catching one shrimp every 5 to 10 minutes… we found out their secret bait was chicken heart. They were able to cut it into very small pieces and probably it’s a “exotic” for the shrimp to have something else to eat. Next time we’ll try that…

Check out our pictures:

The place is a bit inconvenient to get to but they do offer a free shuttle from the MRT, except that it’s only until around 10pm.

We’re going to have a good prawn dinner tomorrow night.

Good Friday on Orchard Rd

Since Joyce’s URI seemed to be completely cured after a week of antibiotics, she no longer had her “manly”, “nasal” voice… we made a plan to do some shopping on Orchard Rd since Good Friday is a public holiday in Singapore. I had the day off from work but Ron still had to go to class so we couldn’t go anywhere for a long weekend. So I was glad to have someone to spend the day with rather than just being stuck at home 😛

We met up for lunch at the Paragon. In the basement there is a cafe called Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie where they have fabulous desserts and also serve salads, sandwiches, and crepes.

I had the croque madame, a sandwich made with gruyere cheese and ham and a sunny side up egg on the top. The first time I tried this sandwich was in Napa last year for Vicki’s birthday.

Joyce had the smoked salmon crepe with canapes and dill butter. The dill butter was very good. It was a bit buried by the salad though.

Of course, we saved room for dessert. Joyce had the strawberry shortcake.

I look like a little kid but we were both like little kids in a candy store. I had the warm chocolate cake with something creamy on the side. It was too rich for me to finish the whole thing.

Oh this is also the same place where my boss gets her macaroons! very excellent but no space to eat them after our lunch.

After we rolled out of the restaurant, we headed to do some shopping. Both of our mom’s have their birthdays at the end of the month so we wanted to get them something special… and also indulge a bit for ourselves. We found some great deals and bought our gifts so it was a successful shopping day 🙂

We ended up at Paragon again to have dinner at Fish & Co. They serve their fish in a pan.

They have these cute wooden blocks to put the pan on:

Joyce had the salmon and fries.

See one of her many shopping bags next to her? 😛 The topping on the salmon was pretty tasty, called futaba or something, but she said part of the salmon wasn’t well cooked. The vegetables were a good addition to the meal. The fries are also included but if you don’t want fries (called “chips at this restaurant, like “fish & chips”), they also offer rice.

I had the swordfish collar.

I didn’t realize it was so huge, the pan is twice the size of Joyce’s. I only ate one side. It was really good when dipped in the mango vinagrette provided, otherwise it was a bit too fishy by itself. I brought the other half home to eat tomorrow.

Ah, a satisfying day… it totally doesn’t feel like Friday… it’s so nice to still have two more days of the weekend to look forward to!
