Little Kaylee

Day 223

Today is our last day in Southern California. Simon was itching to go, “let me out!”

We went to find ourselves some Taiwanese breakfast so ended up at Ye-May Restaurant which was recommended by a local. Ron loves his Taiwanese breakfast foods so was excited to try it. We ordered the egg crepe served with an actual sauce that was sort of like sweet soy with garlic. Very unlike our last trip when we went to Yung Ho and they gave us soy paste.

Ba-wan, my favorite. The minced stuff inside was yummy and much easier to eat than some places that use large chunks of bamboo and meats.

I always forget what this is called since I don’t like to eat it… it’s one of Ron’s favorites though.

He also liked it because it was “stuffed”, usually the ingredients are on top or a bit is distributed but this actually had a large amount of filling.

This was an interesting “sandwich” with preserved vegetables, peanuts, and meat. It seemed like they microwaved it though so wasn’t as fresh as the other stuff.

We ordered some rice rolls to go, one savory and one sweet. They are made fresh so are hot when you get them. Ron couldn’t resist and had to take a bite right away just to see if the fried dough stick inside was crunchy. The sweet one is a fried dough stick covered in sugar then wrapped with the rice.

This restaurant is much better than Yung Ho so visit Ye-May if you’re ever in San Gabriel and craving some Taiwanese breakfast.

After our breakfast, we drove over to Manhattan Beach to meet up with our friend Lynne and her daughter Kaylee. Simon look a little nap in the car with his Winnie the Pooh seatbelted in, safe and sound.

Little Kaylee is 2.5 months old. I’ve already forgotten how small and seemingly fragile babies are at this age. She was really well behaved during our lunch and super cute in her sleep. She would make the mouthing motions of sucking to show mommy she is hungry. “Baby smell” at this age is softer and sweeter than at Simon’s age. It was fun to meet her and chat with mommy Lynne. Don’t you just want to pinch those chubby cheeks?

We had lunch at a place called Islands at the mall which is sort of like Hawaiian Mexican (?). Tacos with Hawaiian seasoned insides.

We had a quick dessert of seasonal pumpkin cupcakes filled with cream cheese frosting.

Then had to rush to return our rental car and catch our flight home. We were almost going to be late but it ended up our flight was delayed so we made it on time. We sat next to the wing and engine again and Simon slept through most of the flight. He woke up during landing when we hit a bump but that was all. I hope flying is always this easy with him.

Simon is not eating much solid food these last few days. He only likes to eat puffs he can pick up with his own hands and avocado that I feed him. So tonight we finally decided to try some peas and corn. He didn’t enjoy pureed peas but we thought he might like picking up and eating an actual pea. He seemed okay with it but still wasn’t quite sure how to eat it. This is only a video of the peas (and sorry it is sideways, I forgot to flip the camera) and we added corn kernels later.

After our weekend away from home, Simon fell right to sleep in his own bed, hugging is pal Pooh.

All dressed up and somewhere to go

Day 222

The wedding was this morning at 9:30am so Simon was still a bit groggy. He’s looking at me like he wants to go back to bed.
What do you think of his tie?

The setting for the wedding was a garden terrace.

His full outfit of a white polo, black tie, and khaki shorts.

It was a pretty warm morning so they had water for the guests. Simon kept on grabbing at my cup so I let him try to drink from it. Not sure if it was actually successful but at least he is interested.

After the ceremony, we headed to the reception and Simon got even more dressy, his tuxedo bib.

But all the excitement and the warm day made Simon really sleepy.

A refreshing sorbet dessert.

Simon is really knocked out.

As he shifted, his mouth stayed open.

Ron found Simon’s sleeping position strange.

The reception was lunch so we met up with other friends for dinner at Mr. Pizza in Los Angeles.

Ron let Simon play with his spoon… maybe he wants to try to feed himself but he may still be a bit young for that.

One of their signature pizza. It sort of tastes like breakfast with the bacon on top then dessert when you get to the crust. The crust is stuffed with sweet potato mash so is sweet and savory at the same time. It was delicious!

Side profile.

Then we went for dessert a few blocks away at a place called Yellow House Cafe. You walk through this stationary store before you reach the chairs and tables in the patio in the back. It’s great atmosphere with fire pits and heat lamps in the outdoor seating area but people do smoke outside which isn’t good for babies. We decided to stay anyways so I ordered a sweet potato latte. No coffee in it I think since it didn’t wake me up.

Everyone else’s dessert: traditional shaved ice, mango smoothie, sweet potato latte, and pineapple sorbet served in a mini pineapple.

The mini pineapple was really cute.

Simon knocked out again for the evening.

First airplane trip and first dental exam

Day 221

We are in Southern California for a wedding this weekend. Simon took his first airplane ride and this is his first boarding pass (looks like he wants to eat it). We had to stop at the check-in counter to show them Simon’s passport to get his boarding pass and also to check-in a piece of luggage since now we also have to bring all of Simon’s stuff along with our own.

Simon was still wearing his pajamas on the airplane since we figured he would be more comfortable and honestly we just did not have time to change him since he was still napping this morning when we headed to the airport. He is checking out the view out the window. We are sitting near the wing and engine.

Shortly after, Simon fell asleep with his pal Pooh looking over him. Our flight was scheduled around his normal morning naptime so this worked out well.

When we landed at LAX, we picked up our rental car and headed to Simi Valley to see our friends Tiffany and Alex. They prepared an excellent BBQ lunch along with all the fixings.

After our lunch, we headed to check out the dental office that Tiffany works at. While we were there, she showed Simon how to brush his teeth. We were surprised when Simon started laughing out loud during the demonstration. Something about the “chomping” teeth tickled his funny bone.

They had multiple versions of these plush with teeth and Simon liked all of them. Here he is with a chomping fish.

Still laughing at the chomping fish…

Then down to business with the dental exam and first teeth brushing. Yes he only has two little bottom teeth but it’s better to start earlier than later.

After his exam, he still had energy for more laughter. A chomping horse.

Thank you Auntie Tiffany for giving Simon his first dental exam. I hope you guys can move closer to the bay area so that Simon can continue to get his checkups with you.

After the dentist, we drove to San Gabriel to check-in to our hotel and to meet up with friends for dinner. We ended up at a vegetarian restaurant for dinner. Can you believe this platter is completely meat-less?

We also had dessert at a nearby tea cafe. This is taro soup with taro rice balls and red beans.

Ron had the mocha ice blend. Served in this cute mini pitcher with a bit too much whipped cream.

Simon had a long day and was exhausted. He fell asleep pretty easily and even in this foreign bed provided by the hotel.

Tomorrow is the big wedding day!

Messy eater

Day 220

Simon is enjoying trying to feed himself. It’s fun to watch him try and he makes a big mess!

Here is Simon stuffing his face with puffs and avocado.

After getting cleaned up from a messy lunch with a change of clothes, it was naptime.

Then an afternoon stroll with daddy to Starbucks.

Today was daddy Ron’s birthday so we went to Buca di Beppo to have dinner with a few friends. They treated Ron to a birthday brownie and a candelabra of three candles.

Like father, like son… matching orange polos!

Now where can we find Ron some matching monkey pants??

Buffer Zone

Day 219

Hi mommy, I’m ready to get out of bed!

Simon keeps on trying to stand up using his toys but he can lose his balance easily so Ron fashioned this cushion buffer zone to prevent Simon from hurting himself when he falls.

Simon has been required more clothing changes today because of his messy table habits.

Sometimes he prefers to suck our fingers instead of his own.

Tonight we let Simon try some corn kernels. I was afraid that he might choke on them but I fed him two kernels by hand and he seemed to enjoy it and had no problem swallowing them. I just took him a while to “gum” them enough to swallow them. Then I gave the bowl of kernels to Ron to feed Simon while I made dinner (my turn for once, Ron always makes us dinner…). Ron is trying to teach Simon to use “the force” to get the corn kernel into his mouth…

The corn must have given him a lot of energy. He had a fun time in his Exersaucer running around it and very fast. He gets distracted a bit by my dresses and gets stucks sometimes too but eventually gets himself free to keep on moving.

Auntie Vicki, are you reading? Sorry I got behind on Simon’s updates!
