Awkward… (but comfortable?) sleeping positions

Day 44

Simon has some pretty funny sleeping positions, he fell asleep leaning on my lap while sitting on the sofa.

His gassiness and fussiness seems to have gotten better these last two days… but I’m not sure how long it will last.  Just when we think he’s developing some sort of pattern, he’ll change it up and surprise us with an extremely fussy day.  One of our friend’s warned us that this was the case, we didn’t understand what he meant until a few days ago.

Cheesecake Factory

Day 43

Today we had a craving for some non-Asian cuisine so since we live close to Union Square, we had lunch at Cheesecake Factory.  For the outing, we dressed up Simon in one of his new outfits.  The onesie is from Gap (from Auntie Sabrina, Uncle Min, and their twins!) and the pants from JAKC Designs (it is part of the robot outfit).  Doesn’t he look nerdy?  So funny… Ron says he kind of looks like Waldo from Where’s Waldo?

I’m wearing my wrist splint and although it is awkward with holding Simon, it has helped to reduce the sharp pains I was having.  I think it is helping by letting the swelling go down on my wrist and stop me from continual re-injury with my movement.  I hope in a few days that I can go without it during the day and only wear it at night.

We had a nice walk where Simon stayed awake but he fell asleep at the restaurant.  Probably all the white noise lulled him to sleep.

We had a good lunch but couldn’t fit in a piece of cheesecake so instead brought home a slice.  This is the red velvet cheesecake, so delicious!

As it usually happens, when Simon has on a new outfit, he pees on it.  This time it was probably daddy’s fault since he didn’t tighten the diaper enough so the pee leaked out of the sides.  Simon needed a bath anyways and after he bathed, we dressed him up in a full body suit, complete with footsies.  He looks like a little astronaut!  Simon seemed to like this as he promptly decided to sleep, nice and cozy.

Last night, we tried out the Halo Sleep Sack that we received from Ron’s friend Barbara in Germany.  It’s easier than wrapping Simon in a blanket but only if you put it on before he falls asleep, it can be cumbersome to try to put it on while he’s trying to fall sleep.  It’s nice a soft though, he slept well last night.

Simon was a bit active in the late evening since he slept quite a bit during the day.  Yesterday he had a very fussy and gassy day so didn’t sleep well so he seemed to be trying to make up for it today… until evening time when he finally caught up on his sleep and wanted to play.  His neck is really getting a lot stronger and is able to hold it up for longer periods of time when on his tummy.

I bought this hat from Target, it’s made by Carter’s, because it was so cute.  After washing, it looks like it shrank and is already too small for his head… we’re gonna have to stretch it out if we want him to continue to wear it.

He has such a perplexed expression, I wonder what he’s thinking?

Grandparents Galore

Day 42

Simon spent time with his grandparents today.  Grandma and Grandpa Chung came over to visit in the early morning, just in time to feed him.

He’s still be suffering from a lot of indigestion like symptoms so although he’s been tired and wanting to sleep, he hasn’t been able to sleep well.  I finally tried out the Baby Bjorn to carry Simon since he was only comfortable when vertical but I was quickly getting tired with carrying him everywhere (plus it was wearing on my wrists).  Using the carrier, I was able to free up my arms and with me walking around, it helped to rock him to sleep.  He got a good 2 hour nap this way.

Simon week 7

Today Simon wore his cool new Paul Frank outfit.  I did four loads of laundry yesterday since he was running out of clothes and blankets plus we seem to receive new gifts every week for him that have to be washed before wearing.  This outfit is so awesome and cute on him.  There are even suspenders in the back (sorry no picture…).  This picture is especially funny because my parents always say that I spent most of my time as a baby with my arms extended exactly like this… maybe mannerisms like this are genetic?

In the evening, we got Simon ready to take him over to Grandma and Grandpa Tam’s house for dinner.  It’ll be his first time visiting them at their home and to meet the dogs.  Ron has been experimenting with the DSLR that we borrowed from my dad.  He was playing with the sport mode where it takes many shots in succession, in order to catch Simon’s facial expressions since they change so fast.  Here’s a cute smile.

After our dinner, Simon woke up for a while to have a snack but fell quickly back into a deep sleep.  He didn’t even notice Buddy hovering all around him.  Actually Buddy is very jealous that my dad is holding Simon since it’s usually him that is in his arms.  Buddy has just had a bath and needs to be brushed, he looks like a wet little lamb.

How much do I weigh?

Day 41

I had a check-up today so we thought we’d weigh Simon when I was getting my weight checked. I won’t say how much weigh except that I have 8 lbs to lose before I get back to my pre-pregnancy weight… but while I’m at it, I’m going to try to lose another 10 lbs. We’ll see how that goes. I may go back to my gestational diabetes diet to help my weight loss along. The fear of developing type 2 diabetes is motivation enough.

From their digital scale, Simon weighs 12.4 lbs (12 lbs 6 oz or 5.6kg) which breaks down into him gaining 10 oz per week since his last doctor’s visit so I would say that is above average…

The last few days I have been having worsening wrist pain, mostly in my right wrist. My NP said it is common to have carpal tunnel postpartum. It has to do with hyperflexing your wrist as you sleep and usually while nursing. I bought a wrist brace to keep my wrist immobile to reduce strain, let’s hope it works. I’m going to try some ice packs and ibuprofen to see if it helps too. Right now it’s hard for me to carry Simon, type, write, and do daily tasks like washing dishes and brushing my teeth. The pain is sharp and sudden… I hope it goes away.

Simon’s picture of the day, taking a nap with a pacifier.  We offered the pacifier since he was having trouble falling asleep for his afternoon nap.  He’s been having a lot of stomach issues (gassy, gurgling, etc) so hasn’t been falling asleep easily.

Visit with Becky

Day 40

Today Simon has a visit from Becky and her fiance Ron. It was a gloomy day here in San Francisco so it was nice to have them over instead of going out in the rain.

We will be taking Simon to their wedding in May but probably only to the reception and not the ceremony. I do not want to be one of those parents who are oblivious to their baby’s crying and let them ruin the ceremony. Who would want to have a baby screaming in the background while they are trying to say their vows?

It took Simon a while to take this afternoon nap but he always looks so peaceful when he finally does fall asleep. He seems to like to take a 2 hour nap in the late evening, play for a while, eat some more then will “go to bed” at 8-9pm. He’ll continue to wake up every 2.5-3 hours to eat but usually will fall right back asleep until about 8-9am the next morning. The last few days he’s been taking in 3 to 5 ounces of milk when he wakes up the first time after “going to bed”. It’s amazing to us since during the daytime, he takes in 1 to 3 ounces each time so we thought his stomach must be small but he does eat more often during the daytime (every 1-2 hours) so I guess that makes up for the volume.  He’s a daytime “snacker”.

Ron had a meeting today from 2-7pm so I had Simon all to myself.  I was very tired by the time Ron brought home dinner.  I really wanted to take a nap so I tried each time Simon fell asleep but he only wanted to nap in my arms.  Each time I tried to put him down, he would wake up then cry for some food or want to play.  He finally fell asleep about 6pm.  I can’t imagine if I was at home with Simon everyday by myself while Ron had to go to an office job.  I can understand why parents can look so exhausted when they are the primary caregiver at home by him/herself.  I really appreciate having him home with me so we can share some of the baby duties.
