Simon Day 20 – Daly City Outing

Simon decided this morning that he wanted to eat at 2:30am, 5am, 7am, and 9am this morning so I didn’t really have a restful sleep. I eventually got to take a nap but that made us late getting out of the house. Apparently while I was napping, Simon wanted to eat again at 10:30am so Ron went ahead and fed him with some of the breast milk I’ve been storing in the freezer. Simon’s pediatrician recommended that we bottle feed him once a day so that when I go back to work, the transition won’t be too awkward. Plus it’s a good way to give him his vitamins (by adding it to the bottle). His pediatrician also recommended we give him daily vitamin D supplements since he probably won’t get enough vitamin D from the sun. We are giving him Enfamil’s Tri-Vi-Sol (without iron) which has Vitamins A, D, and C.

But as we were getting to leave, Simon decided to wet himself (and his clothes) and since his hair seemed a bit oily, we just decided to give him a bath. He wasn’t amused. Do you think Simon looks really serious, really constipated, or just really cranky?

We needed to go out today because we were running out of diapers. We had a small supply from the hospital and received some at our first baby shower but didn’t have enough time to order them online plus we were looking for the Pampers that we used at the hospital. At Kaiser Redwood City, they use Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive diapers which have the unique feature of a wetness indicator, a yellow stripe that turns blue when wet. According to diapers.com, the wetness indicator feature was recently discontinued so I didn’t want to order from them so we wanted to find them at either Target or Babies”R”Us.

But since we were so delayed in getting out of the house, we decided to go have lunch first at In-N-Out.

Unfortunately, Target did not have the Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive in Size 1 so we went to Babies”R”Us and found what we were looking for, at least for now. Apparently, Pampers is discontinuing the Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive and replacing it with Pampers Dry Max so we’ll have to see what we’ll do after our supply runs out. Another shopper said the Dry Max works well, apparently it makes liquids into a gel (like the Huggies we have) so prevents leaks better… but the Huggies we have still leak so not sure what to make of that. I hope the effort we took to find these Pampers will be worth it. They just seemed to work well in the hospital, seem softer, and the wetness indicator was very useful.

Simon Day 19 – Pho Tan Hoa and Sunbathing in Union Square

Ron and I took Simon for a walk around our neighborhood. We went for lunch at Pho Tan Hoa, my first bowl of pho since Simon was born. Yay for me!

It was yummy since I hadn’t had a bowl in a while but it seemed a bit expensive. For two bowls of pho (one small and one medium bowl) and one iced coffee with condensed milk was $19.95. I was full when we left so the portion size is good. But $8 for a bowl of pho and even their spring roll appetizer (4 pieces) was $8 (so we didn’t order them) seems a bit pricey.

After lunch, we took a little stroll with Simon. We had to navigate around Glide Memorial and through the crowds that were out during this beautiful day in San Francisco. We ended up at Union Square, sitting underneath an umbrella and catch some rays (although not direct sunlight since Simon’s skin is still very sensitive) and absorb some vitamin D.

Simon has been really good on our outings, mostly because he sleeps through them. He seems to be lulled to sleep by the ride in the stroller. We just really needed to get out of the house for some fresh air since we have been cooped up in the apartment.

My parents came for a short visit this evening so we took some more pictures. Here are his cute little feet, all healed after his multiple punctures for blood tests while in the hospital.

Since Simon slept so well during the afternoon, he hasn’t been sleeping well during the evening. Apparently my dad has a calming effect on children so Simon quieted down and eventually fell asleep. But we caught one photo where he stopped squirming for a second. It seems like his hair is growing pretty quickly, when do babies need their first hair cut?

Cupkates and Bi-Rite Creamery

Since it’s not always so easy for us to go out, we luckily have friends and family who bring things to us!

We had a treat from Virginia of some cupcakes from Cupkates! Top left is the Banana with Nutella Frosting. Bottom left is Peanut Butter Frosting with Chocolate Cupcake. Bottom right is the Salted Caramel Frosting with Chocolate Cupcake.

Ron and I tried two of them for now. I enjoyed the banana cupcake itself but not so much the frosting. The cupcake was very moist and rich with banana flavor. It was the opposite with the PB and chocolate, the PB frosting was very delicious, like a very creamy peanut butter but the chocolate cupcake a bit too bitter although very moist. We still have the salted caramel one left. I’ve posted about Cupkates before, click here.

Ron’s brother Henry and his girlfriend Betty went to Bi-Rite Creamery and brought us a pint of ice cream. I requested malted vanilla with peanut brittle and milk chocolate. The ice cream is deliciously creamy and I loved the little bites of peanut brittle mixed in. Yum! I’ve posted about Bi-Rite before too, click here.

It’s been fun being able to eat cupcakes and ice cream again. In a few weeks, I will need to take another oral glucose tolerance test to make sure I no longer have glucose intolerance (diabetes). I think I should start cutting down on the carbohydrates again to make sure I don’t do more harm to my body but I don’t want to diet so that I can make sure to produce enough breast milk for Simon.

Simon Day 18 – Wardrobe Change

I guess Simon decided this morning that he wanted to model his new clothes for us since he kept on peeing on himself so that we’d change his clothes.

He started out wearing his ducky T-shirt from yesterday and his diaper leaked so we decided to change his outfit. We wanted to try out his Paul Frank onesie from Auntie Tiffany and Uncle Alex and Ron even combed his hair to try to look like a rock star.

Within 30 minutes, he needed another diaper change because he pooped. While changing his diaper, he decided to pee again and shot a urine stream to the side of the changing table which ran down to his back and got this outfit all wet. So once again, we changed his outfit to something more appropriate, his “PP” shirt from my co-workers.

After this change, he promptly decided to poop some more so it was my turn to change his diaper. So as I started to change his diaper, he shot a urine stream above his head. This time it ran down the changing table and onto his hair. Now we thought it best to give him a bath to wash his hair. After his whole body was clean, he then decided to poop in this bath tub! Such a troublemaker today.

This wasn’t the last of it, later on in the afternoon, his diaper leaked. This was probably our fault as we didn’t make it tight enough. So his last change of clothes for the day was into his UC Berkeley onesie. Late afternoon, my parents dropped by unexpectedly since they were in the area and brought us some BBQ pork buns and sponge cakes.

In the evening, Elaine and Edgar dropped by for a visit and brought Simon a gift of a very cute pair of overalls from Janie and Jack.

I can’t decide which of these pictures is cuter… I love his big eyes!

I am just so unbelievably enamored by Simon!

Simon Day 17 – Sleeping Babe

After yesterday’s marathon feeding, today all Simon wanted to do was sleep. After each feeding, he’d doze off and become like a sack of rice. He’s been playing with his hands more so they’ll end up resting on his face or on my chest. It was a bit cooler in the apartment today so maybe that helped him to settle down back into his routine of sleeping longer periods of time.

Simon’s chubby little arm and fingers.

Training to be Superman!

So I made up for lost time today and got plenty of sleep while he was sleeping too. I think the sleep deprivation is starting to get to me as I find myself more tired during the day now. The first two weeks I could stay up during the day and only sleep at night, now I find myself taking more cat naps.
