Bridges Golf Club, Jetlag, and House of Prime Rib

This morning I didn’t wake up until almost 11… it was a good sleep. My parents’ guest room bed is very comfortable, soft but firm. I finally woke up once my brother came over and we all went to have brunch at the Bridges Golf Club, close to my parents’ house. They have quite a nice dining room and serve a good brunch.

I had the crab mango arugula salad with avocado dressing.

We sat outside on the balcony. It was quite nice and warm but not humid like Singapore. We enjoyed a nice brunch.

Ron had a meeting in SF so he headed out after brunch whereas I ended up back at my parents’ house and did some things before taking a nap from 2:30-4:30pm. It was really hard to get up, I was really exhausted. My dad took my mom to the airport since she was heading to Vegas so I had the house to myself and it was really quiet so that’s probably part of the reason I kept on sleeping.

I woke up and discovered no one home so went to play with my cats and the dog. The kitties became a little more warm. They became more curious about me… as you can see they are approaching warily.. Misu is on the left and Mochi is on the right.

But shortly after, Mochi crawled back underneath the bed and I couldn’t do anything to coax her out…

Misu though became his usual self and crawled into my lap for a while… it made me really happy he started to purr…

After playing with them a bit and hanging out with my dad, I headed to the BART station to take it in to SF. I didn’t want to try to drive to SF and find parking. We had made plans for dinner with our friends Susan and Ken. They recently got engaged so we wanted to congratulate them. Ron and I have been craving some good beef so we made a reservation at House of Prime Rib for dinner. It was definitely worth it but I’m feeling still feeling super stuffed. I hope my stomach can digest all the prime rib I ate.

I enjoyed the House Cut, of course with the side salad, baked potato, Yorshire pudding, and creamed spinach (although I didn’t finish all the sides…). Yum!

Baked potato with all the fixin’s: butter, sour cream, bacon, and chives!

All of us happily full after our meal:

I took the BART home since Ron starts his course tomorrow so he headed to stay in Millbrae at his parents’ house. Ken took the BART with me partway since he was heading down to Fremont so at least I didn’t have to ride the train all the way alone. BART versus MRT at 9:30pm is much different. In the Singapore MRT, it’ll still have quite a few people that you may still need to stand (like after my Chinese course) while BART is almost empty, there were only 6 people in the car of the 4-car train. Plus now it costs $9USD round-trip from Walnut Creek to San Francisco! Yikes, so expensive.

But it took me back to Walnut Creek safely and from there I drove back to San Ramon. This evening on the way to the station, I dropped by a Petco to buy my kitties a new toy. I figured bribery may work and I was right. I played with them for an hour and they seemed more animated and friendly. I guess it just takes time for them to remember you and forgive you.

Now I can’t quite sleep since it’s late afternoon in Singapore but am going to try to head to bed so I can get up early to make plans for the rest of the week… it’s so good to be home.

End of my double Saturday

I had a nice nap after writing the draft to my last post. I figured it’d be okay to sleep to help me adjust my schedule. I stayed up for the last few hours of the flight. They served us breakfast about an hour and a half before we landed.

Had some yummy yogurt.

Breakfast of very fatty bacon, veggies, and mushy rice patty.

An American guy was sitting next to me and he was like my personal aisle monitor. I guess I’m pretty clueless when it comes to flight attendants coming to collect things in the aisle so he always helped me to either pass my tray or just to let me know they were on their way by. It was funny too, the flight attendants seemed to think I was Japanese so on both flights they spoke to me in Japanese but I’d answer in English and I’d get a bit of a perplexed look. They did it through the entire flight.

I arrived around 11am and went through immigration quickly but my luggage was slow. I was so glad to exit and see the following sign:

Ron came to pick me up and we visited his dad at work to say hi before heading to have dim sum with my parents in Dublin. They wanted to take us to Koi Garden, which is related to one of their favorite restaurants in Daly City called Koi Palace. They now have 4 restaurants, the original in Daly City, one at Thunder Valley Casino, and these 2 in Dublin called Koi Garden and Just Koi. We had some interesting dishes when we were there.

On was the Swallow’s Nest Egg-White Tart. Swallow’s Nest is supposed to be good for your health. Since it was also made only of egg-whites, I guess it is pretty healthy. It was quite tasty too.

We also had lobster for lunch. The fry the lobster but use the tail meat to make lobster and shrimp dumplings. It was quite a large dish but very tasty.

The shrimps inside the dumplings weren’t shrimp paste but actually large shrimp cut up in small pieces. Although Singapore has a lot of seafood, I don’t know where you can get stuff like this there.

My dad also ordered this Scallop with Sea Urchin Cheese Rice. It may sound a bit gross but actually with the cheese, it was really good. But by this time, we were so stuffed because we also had other dim sum and beef hor fun as well. We brought home a lot of leftovers.

Here are my Mom and Dad:

Afterwards, we went to hang out for a while at their house, this is the beautiful day we had and some views from their backyard.

I got to meet their dog, Happy, for the first time. She has this bad habit of peeing everywhere when she gets excited. Seeing me for the first time was no exception. When she came into the house to greet me, she peed all the way, all over the kitchen floor. She’s a very friendly dog though, very hyperactive, but very cute.

My cats weren’t to happy to see us though. I think they were a bit scared or maybe a bit upset with us. They wouldn’t come out of hiding underneath the bed. Tomorrow I’ll spend more time trying to coax them out and make friends with them. I was so looking forward to seeing them, it made me a bit sad they weren’t as glad to see me…

In the evening, it just happened our friends Christie and Conan were having a BBQ at their new apartment in Pacifica so we decided to drop by and say hello. They live in this beautiful apartment right near the beach in Pacifica. We got there just in time for the sunset.

I got the chance to catch up with some friends and also to hear about the current situation at UCSF. It was good to catch up with friends and enjoy some good American food. We had chips, fresh salsa, spinach dip, fresh green salad, hummus… yum. Sometimes you don’t realize how much you miss things unless you have them again.

It’s about time to get to sleep now. It’s been a very long day, it’s really like I had 2 Saturdays… but I guess when I get back to Singapore, I will lose Monday. Oh well… gonna try to make the most of my time here while I’ve still got time.

Going to home sweet home…

While I write this, I’ve already gone from Singapore to Narita, Japan and am now in the airplane to SFO. It’s 8pm Singapore time right now. I won’t get to post this until I land though… another 6 hours or so.

I finished packing pretty late last night and headed out this morning for the airport at 6am with my flatmate Roli. Her flight was about an hour after mine so we thought we’d just share a cab to save some money. This is the first time I’ve flown ANA and so far I can say I am very satisfied. The check-in was a breeze the flight attendants are very friendly plus they constantly walk around serving drinks even when it’s not mealtime! They seem more considerate of the fact that we can’t bring our own drinks on the plane. They also offer other beverages besides just plain water like most airlines… it’s actually OJ, green tea, coffee, etc.

Although, the food on the first flight was a bit disappointing.

The main course was something called a chicken burger with mushroom gravy. The inside of the meat was a bit dry and there wasn’t enough sauce. It also had a hash brown which was mushy and a oily.

The salad was better than the main course but only because it included some sort of shrimp thousand island dressing thing that was very refreshing.

The cheesecake was yucky. Not a very good texture and the fruit had no flavor.

The airplane itself was nice. I had the row to myself as the flight was pretty empty so the gentleman sitting next to me moved to the row behind so he could have the row to himself. Also, behind each chair headrest is a TV where you can choose what you want to watch. I watched the Japanese movie “Hero” about a lawyer and a manslaughter case. It was a cute but a bit random movie.

Before landing in Narita, we got vanilla ice cream. Yum! It was a local ice cream too since it had Malay on it.

On this flight now to SFO, just had dinner I guess you could say.

The main was soy sauce yellowtail served with crab meat on rice and veggies. The fish was nice but maybe a tad dry. The rice was very mushy and not to my taste.

The salad had a yummy salmon and onion side plus pasta shell salad with a slice of beef and ham. It was a bit weird of a combination but was pretty ok.

The cold noodles were yummy and there was also a bun with herb cheese. Yum. For dessert Hagen Daz vanilla ice cream. Can’t be beat. Yum.

I watched the movie “P.S. I Love You” with Hillary Swank, Lisa Kudrow, Harry Connick Jr. etc. It was a sweet movie. I liked it. Makes you think about what you’ve got and how you should appreciate it.

Now the cabin is dark so I think I’m gonna take a nap like everyone else so that when we get to SF, I won’t be so groggy. I slept a bit on the morning flight but I can never get enough sleep.

Almost there! As I mentioned it’s about 8pm Singapore time on Saturday… so have been traveling for about 12 hours total already… another 6 more hours to go. It’ll still be Saturday when I arrive in the US… almost like travelling back to the future 😀

La Fondue @ Dempsey Hill Green

So I had a date with Joyce tonight. We had a reservation at 7:30pm for 2 persons at La Fondue @ Dempsey Hill Green.

We arrived about 15 minutes early but the restaurant was empty so they seated us right away. We decided against ordering cheese fondue, I think Joyce’s stomach probably couldn’t handle it after suffering from food poisoning all week. But of course we had to get some sort of chocolate fondue for dessert.

For main courses, Joyce had something called “Sea of Life”, I think it was a sea bass roasted and covered with a buttery cream sauce and served with a small side salad.

I had the Cajun Crusted Fish (not sure what type of fish but a white one) and also served with a side salad. I really enjoyed the greens, had some spicy arugula and some bitter greens. I miss salads.

The main courses did come out a bit slow though. The guy said he just caught the fish so he apologized for taking so long… ha ha right? Thought he was a bit of a joker.

Then guess what happened? Around 7:45pm, I get a call on my phone and I see it’s the La Fondue restaurant calling me. I’m like “huh?” Why would they be calling me if we’re already sitting down? So I answered the phone and I was afraid maybe I’d made the reservation at the wrong La Fondue location… but nope, the waiter was literally behind the bar calling me confirming my reservation and wondering where we were… I said we’re sitting inside the restaurant. He’s like “oh…” and politely hangs up and comes out to apologize. It was hilarious!! Joyce and I were cracking up laughing… the waiter said there were 2 reservations for Jennifer, both party of 2, and I guess he didn’t know which one was our party…

But the only reason I can’t fully believe it is that there aren’t that many people in Singapore named “Jennifer”…

Oh well, at least we got free entertainment with our dinner… the rest of the night he kept on doing silly things like when I waved him down for the check, he turned around to look outside the window like I was waving at someone outside, before coming over… so funny…

Anyways, now for the fondue… Joyce and I had a bit of a hard time decided since they have about 12 different types of chocolate fondues: orange, mint, caramel, cookies & cream, white, dark, milk, etc

In the end we chose the cookies & cream dark chocolate fondue because we found out the cookies were Oreos!! Boy, we made the right choice…

It is also served with a platter of fruits and ice cream… but it wasn’t really enough for how much chocolate there was so we ordered an additional plate of fruits (without ice cream).

The fondue pot is a bit different at this restaurant, they use a double boiler instead of a candle… basically a stainless steel pot with water inside and the ceramic bowl with the chocolate is placed in the steel pot. This is all put on a electric hot plate built into the table. This is probably easier to take care of even though more expensive.

Our dinner for 2 cost SGD$100, after a 15% discount from using American Express.

Next time I want to try the cheese fondues… they have many different types of cheeses in their fondue pots. This will have to be after Joyce recovers though… she actually tried oral charcoal for her food poisoning and found that it works well. It’s so strange to me that charcoal comes as tablets in Singapore whereas in the US, I think it only comes in a gel in a tube or powder to mix and it’s hard to find. Charcoal in Singapore can be bought at any pharmacy by consulting with a pharmacist.

Still learning the tricks of the trade here…

I’m leaving for US in the morning! Yay!

Chinese class

Today I had the Chinese teacher all to myself since my other two classmates didn’t show up. I think I like her more now after having some one-on-one time with her. She used to irritate me a bit because I think she was a bit too boastful about her accomplishments and didn’t know how to be humble. I don’t like people who preen their own feathers. But I learned a bit more her today and she actually took the time to try to understand my questions and answer them. She used to just assume to know what I was going to ask and answer before I finished asking.

She taught me something interesting though so thought I’d share… it’s a Chinese phrase to call certain ladies:

San(4) pei(2) xiao(3) jie(3)

Hope that Hanyu Pinyin is right…

Literally means something like “three young girls for company”. The “three” doesn’t mean there are actually three girls but that they are willing to do three “things” for you. Namely: Eat, Drink, & Sleep.

Chinese phrases sometimes are so appropriate and it’s quite creative on how they make up words that they don’t already have.

I’ll be missing 3 classes though since I’m leaving for US! Will try to be good and study… hmm…
