Lazy Sunday

Spent a relaxing Sunday at home after just going out for lunch. Thought I’d take a break from eating my way through San Francisco and let Ron catch up on work.

In the morning, we shared the croissant we got from Tartine yesterday. We toasted it in the toaster oven so it got a little burnt on top. It was super buttery but oh so good.

Also, I got the new camera Ron bought for me so hopefully my pictures will be a whole lot better from now on. My new camera is the Canon PowerShot SD960 IS in the lovely blue color. Check out BeachCamera.com!

So new picture of the kitties:

For lunch, we went to Hai Ky Mi Gia in the Tenderloin. I ordered the Beef Stew Ho Fun Soup.

It came with lots of tendons (which I love) and beef. A strong tomato-like flavor and a bit oily but overall not too bad. Not sure I like the neighborhood though.

Ron ordered the duck with dumplings and noodles.

Ron’s dish was served with pickled vegetables. Nice and tangy and Ron says there was a bit of spice.

Plus we shared some Chinese donuts. It was a bit too much…

Asuka Ramen

Tried another new place in SF: Asuka Ramen.

Seaweed salad, a good portion.

I tried the tonkotsu ramen, the pork bone broth with pork, bamboo shoots, and a boiled egg. The broth was fragrant and tasty. The noodles were al dente but seemed like instant. The pork was nicely grilled but a bit fatty.

I had Ron order the katsudon since I was in the mood for that too. There wasn’t enough sauce and the breading on the katsu was a bit thick but I like what there was of the egg & onions with saucy rice.

Unfortunately, this place gave me an upset stomach after eating so don’t think we’ll be back anytime soon.

Shanghai House

Ron decided to try another SF hotspot according to 7×7: Shanghai House.

We tried their dumplings which surprisingly came out within 5 minutes of ordering. Ron says likely they were already steaming in the kitchen so not prepared fresh. The skin was a little thicker than I like but I guess it helps to seal the juices inside.

Green onion pancake.

Spareribs.

I was looking forward to their dao xiao mian (knife cut noodles) but wasn’t very happy after eating it. I’d rather go back to LA to Liang’s Kitchen.

So overall okay and filled our tummies but there are plenty of other places to eat in SF.

Burma Superstar

Craving something different and I had always heard rave reviews about a place called Burma Superstar but the wait is always really long at the restaurant itself. My co-worker suggested to do take-out since it takes only 15-20 minutes so conveniently their menu is online and I was able to order and when Ron came to pick me up from work, we went straight to the restaurant to pick-up. I was surprised when it was ready so quickly, less than 15 minutes after I ordered.

We tried their famous tea leaf salad. Lots of ingredients with a bit tangy and bitter dressing. I liked the peanuts, sesame seeds, and fried garlic. I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I’d be but maybe it tastes better freshly prepared in the restaurant.

Next dish was nan pia dok: coconut curry flat noodles with chicken. It needed a bit more spice and had probably cooled down too much once we started eating so the sauce was thick and wouldn’t coat the noodles easily.

Lastly, we ordered their string beans and fiery tofu with chicken dishes. The string beans were good but a small portion. The “fiery” tofu wasn’t very fiery.

So perhaps it must be much better in the restaurant since I didn’t really enjoy the take-out. All this cost $42 which seems a bit expensive for the portion size. With so many more places to try, not sure when we’ll be back to try it again.

Shin Toe Bul Yi

We went over to Tiff’s apartment to pick up her microwave and toaster oven since she’s moving and won’t have enough room for all of her stuff. To take a break from packing, we went out to dinner at Shin Toe Bul Yi on Taraval. We’d been there two or three other times before.

We tried some new dishes this time. Tiff and her roommate told us about their special house pancake. Apparently they used to serve with along with any meal along with their tofu soup but along the way, they stopped. Their “house pancake” is thinner and lighter than their other pancakes. It’s so good, we gobbled up two of them.

We ordered something else called spicy chewy noodle. The noodles are pretty al dente and served with the spicy bean sauce, cabbage, some other veggies, and an egg. It’s a bit weird as a dinner item since it’s cold, I think it’d be better as a lunch dish. (Sorry for the low resolution camera phone photo, I accidentally changed the settings.)

Patsy joined us for dinner too and suggested we try their sea bass dish. It looks like a mess of goo since it has bean sprouts and some green veggies with a spicy sweet sour sauce on top of the fish. We are guessing it’s a Chilean sea bass or something very similar since the fish is very tender and sweet. I’d go back to eat this again.

After dinner, we went back to Tiff’s place to pick up the microwave, toaster oven, some dishes, a foldable table, floor mats, and a huge Tarepanda plush to see if the kitties would want to sleep on it.

We’re sad to see Tiffany moving but we’re going to LA in a few weeks for a wedding so we’ll be able to see each other again soon.
