Buddy & Happy and TVPhone

I spent a nice afternoon with my parents in the East Bay. We had dim sum at Koi Garden and I went over to their house to meet their new dog: Buddy.

He’s 2 years old and a type of poodle. He looks like a little lamb. Apparently his owner got tired of taking care of him so my dad felt like he could give him a good home. Their dog Happy isn’t very happy right now though with this invader but I’m sure they’ll eventually learn to tolerate each other. They’re in separate spaces right now but it’ll be interesting to see how it’ll be when we’re over for Thanksgiving.

My parents just recently took a trip to Asia and here’s a gadget that my dad brought back, called a TVPhone (side by side with his iPhone).

It doesn’t have the sensitivity of the iPhone touch screen but it does have the capability to display a few languages and seems like it has all the programs that the iPhone comes with. They really do have some good looking copies in Asia. It’ll be interesting to see how well it works as a phone and if you can actually adjust the sensitivity of the screen so it can be used.

Sears Fine Foods, Hello Kitty at H&M, Asuka Ramen

Our Singapore roomie Justine is visiting so we met up for lunch at Sears Fine Foods. None of us have ever tried this restaurant but I’d heard plenty about their famous Swedish pancakes. They don’t take reservations for lunch and they won’t seat your party until everyone is there. The line wasn’t long except that they did ignore us for about 10 minutes when we were the only remaining people in line and there were plenty of open tables. Otherwise service at that the table was great.

I ordered one of their combination meals that comes with 9 pancakes, hash browns, 2 eggs, and corned beef hash. I ordered scrambled eggs. I liked the corned beef hash and the hash browns were nicely crisped. The pancakes were okay, nothing spectacular but they were really cute because of their size and easy to eat.

Ron ordered the Sloppy Joe.

Later in the afternoon, I went walking around the mall and checked out H&M and was pleasantly surprised they sell Hello Kitty clothes for little girls. So cute!

For dinner, Ron and I went to Asuka Ramen which is close to where we live. We tried some new things this time (since the first time I ate there, I got a stomach ache).

I tried the jajamen, noodles with sauce, some cucumbers and fish cake (no broth). It was pretty good, a Chinese style jajamen but I prefer the Korean style.

Ron had the curry over rice with tonkatsu. I didn’t try it but I assume it was pretty good since Ron ate it all without complaint.

We shared the agedashi tofu. Came out piping hot so that was great. The sauce was a bit oily but had good flavor.

I wish I got more Christmas shopping done today but I seem to get more tired easily so have to sit and rest. So I think I’d better start working on a list so I don’t waste so much time with browsing. Time is flying by, it’s almost Thanksgiving!

Macaroni and Cheese with Butternut Squash

In addition to the dessert, I prepared a side dish of Macaroni and Cheese with Butternut Squash. The butternut squash gives the dish a bit of sweetness. It was a pain to peel the squash though, not sure if I’d want to do it again.

The cheddar and squash color look almost the same so it’s hard to tell the difference between what is cheese and what is squash. The dish also lacked a bit of salt, so that might need to be adjusted.

Two Persimmon Tart with Almond Base

For our Thanksgiving potluck at work, I pulled out this recipe from a few years ago from the SF Chronicle: Two Persimmon Tart with Almond Base. It’s been many years since I made it but I remember it being a big hit. The ingredients include both the Hachiya (soft) and Fuyu (crunchy) persimmons.

The tart dough has to refrigerate overnight so if you’re going to try this recipe out, make sure you give yourself plenty of time.

We have a Hachiya persimmon tree at home but I actually don’t like to eat this type of persimmon (I prefer the Fuyu persimmons) so I found this recipe a good way to use the pulp from the Hachiya persimmons.

King Foot Subs

Having the day off in the middle of the week is weird but great! I wish we could have holidays like this more often. Although I’m sure it’s going to be really busy at work tomorrow… but so far had a great day today.

Started with sleeping in then having lunch down the street at King Foot Subs. Today they happened to be celebrating their 34th Birthday! So they are offering a free soda and free bag of chips with any 14″ sub purchase, through December 11, 2009.

We ordered their Kalbi King Sub. Filled with kalbi, kimchi, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. The bread is nicely toasted. They split the sub for us, first in half, then into quarters. It was quite filling. Cost ~$14. A bit expensive but then this was a specialty sub. The regular King size subs are ~$10. The large subs are ~$5.

Since it’s so close by, I’ll definitely go back again.

The rest of the day was spent at Starbucks, catching up on some reading and enjoying a Pumpkin Spice Latte. Then some shopping, big crowds were out today, guess there were a lot of people with the day off today. Then finally, my Dyson DC25 Animal arrived which I ordered refurbished from Overstock. It works wonders… I vacuumed one carpet and it looks brand new, it sucked up all the cat hair and dust. Since it arrived so late, I didn’t want to disturb the neighbors too long so I’ll wait for the weekend to finish cleaning. I can’t wait for a nice clean apartment, free of cat hair (except for the hair on the cats).

This is how I found Mochi and Misu when I arrived home, sleeping cuddled up together.
