A bit feverish

Day 248

Any idea on what to do when your baby is straining to poop during a meal? We have been just letting him sit there and finish what he is doing, finish feeding him, then change his diaper. It is strange though that he poops only during meals. An odd habit.

Ron said that Simon seemed to have been very tired most of the day today and not wanting to eat or drink much. He napped a lot this morning and early afternoon before going to Gymboree for a make-up class since we have plans for tomorrow.

My boys came to pick me up from work and Simon did seem a bit less active and wanted to fall asleep in the car. When we got home, he wasn’t in the mood for play and just wanted to go to bed so he slept for about an hour while we had dinner. When he woke up around 7:30pm, he felt a bit warm and his cheeks were flushed so we took his temperature. It was 100.3 degrees Fahrenheit, the upper limit of normal, a bit feverish. He didn’t seem uncomfortable other than being tired so I fed him a bit of dinner and had him drink about 4 oz of milk before giving him a lukewarm bath. He seemed to enjoy the time in the bath to cool him down a bit. He did feel cooler to the touch after his bath and more active so stayed up for a little bit to play before going to bed again. I hope our little baby is okay and his temperature will go down by tomorrow.

Sucking up noodles

Day 247

Simon likes Edison, his Alphabet Pal toy, not for learning the ABCs but playing with the wheels underneath. Oh well, he’s too young to recite his ABCs just yet so at least he is learning to use his fingers to manipulate things.

Simon can eat about one-quarter to one-half of a medium sized avocado and this is along with some other things like yogurt, fish, snacks, etc. He just really loves avocado. Can you feed your baby too much avocado?

We went to dinner with our friend Susan at San Tung Restaurant. She ordered a noodle dish and lucky for Simon she did, so that he could try having some noodles.

He sucked it right up and seemed to enjoy it.

At first I was just placing the entire piece into his mouth then thought I’d see if he could suck it in. I was so excited when he actually was able to suck it into his mouth… little milestones like these make me happy.

I can only hope this will lead to Simon eating other things besides avocado. We tried pasta a while back but he didn’t seem to like it since it was still too tough for him. We probably just have to boil the heck out of it to make it super soft. Or else try some softer Asian style noodles like egg noodles or something. It’s always exciting to find other things that Simon will eat since he’s turning out to be a bit of a picky eater. He’ll try most things but then reject it instantly if he’s not in the mood. But we try to reintroduce them later and sometimes he’ll be in the mood. This happened with spinach, he hated it the first time around but ate the entire portion the next time. Sometimes he likes bananas and sometimes he doesn’t. The one thing he hardly ever refuses though is avocado. I wonder what it is about avocado that he likes?

New playroom

Day 246

So Simon has taken over our bedroom. We moved the majority of our things into the other room and lay down new foam mats and shoved our bed in the corner so that Simon could have more room to play. I hope he has more fun in this less cramped space.

Although he was not a pretty boy this morning with his crazy hair.

Simon has forgotten how to drink from a straw so Ron had a new method for trying to teach him. Ron would release the water when Simon attempted to suck in. Simon seems to be a bit distracted by the TV.

Along with Simon’s new playroom, he has a new toy shelf. He likes the bins (and is playing with Hello Kitty, hehe).

I just realized that he’s getting taller without me noticing. Check him out reaching up on the shelf.

Simon had fun with this squeaking hammer that we got a few months ago in Santa Cruz. I love his expression here, looks a bit evil though.

He had a hard time grabbing hold because it was kind of slippery but eventually got it with daddy’s demonstration.

One of Simon’s favorite things about his new playroom is crawling to the edge…

Ripping off one of the foam edges…

Then trying to eat it. Daddy is trying to teach Simon “No, don’t eat”.

The room still needs some fine tuning but we’re getting there. At least Simon has more room to explore and crawl around now and is more secure away from the kitties.

Do I look like a girl?

Day 245

Simon has been having a good week, he received another toy on loan from Auntie Zoe. Lots of buttons to press, things to pull, places to put his hands in, and music!

Simon and daddy Ron went shopping today at Babies R Us and someone there thought Simon was a girl. Does he look like a girl to you? I don’t think he’d make a very good looking girl. But maybe a boy that looks like a girl will grow up to be a pretty boy? Let’s hope so. Ron thinks he may look like a girl to some because of his curly little hairs at the sides of his head. We’ll probably have to trim those eventually.

Drooling (to the right) leads to napping.

Simon ready for bed.

First sneakers

Day 244

Simon really likes his new toy from grandma Tam. Lots of things to spin and move and touch!

Plus for some reason, Simon was focused on this piece of string that is attached to one of his toys. He just wants to get it into his mouth…

Simon has had the bad habit lately of keeping food in his mouth without swallowing, then getting fussy about it because he doesn’t want to swallow it down. He doesn’t know how to spit (which is probably a good thing) but it can take him up to 15 minutes to swallow a mouthful. Here he is protesting that there is fish and sweet potato in his mouth but he doesn’t want to swallow it.

Eventually what helps is taking sips of water. Simon will open his mouth to a bottle and let you tilt the water into his mouth (that is, when he feels in the mood to drink water).

Simon got a new pair of shoes recently and Ron decided to let Simon wear them for a bit today. He doesn’t know what to make of them…

Ron thought they would prevent Simon from sucking on his toes but what baby wants, baby will try his hardest to get it…

So eventually the shoes came off and Simon wanted to show off his new robot outfit.

This evening was open gym at Gymboree so we brought Simon to get some exercise. He seemed to like being in this tube as he didn’t want to crawl out.

He also seems to like the space here since he crawls and tries to chase things. He crawls a bit different though, he uses his right foot and left knee instead of being on both his knees. You’ll see in this video.

Since Gymboree has soft mats, we thought it a good opportunity to let Simon learn how to “fall” without injuring himself. He learned a bit how to get to sitting from standing by bending his knees and using his arms for support.

Simon seems to like Gymboree and their space so we are thinking of rearranging our place so that Simon can have more crawl space. Stay tuned.
