Five months old

Day 153

Ron has been looking on Craiglists for toys for Simon so we picked up a few on Sunday and also today. We got him this bouncer so that he can practice his leg muscles. It has a few different modes. One mode will play music whenever the bouncer goes up and down and the other mode plays continuous music. The person who sold it to us advised not to turn it on the continuous mode because it would annoy the heck out of us.

We also got these other toys, a xylophone, a shape sorter, a LeapFrog ABC drum, and a toy by Fisher Price called poppin’ pals.

Simon had his second solid food meal today of rice cereal. Once again he made a mess of himself but seemed to eat a bit more.

Oh and for those who are curious, Simon did finally poop on Wednesday morning, almost 2 1/2 days after his first meal. I was a little anxious about giving him solid food today since he hasn’t pooped since Saturday morning but apparently it is perfectly normal for babies to poop once a week. So we’ll see what happens.

I can’t believe he is 5 months old already!

Learning to drive

Day 152

I caught Simon this morning grabbing onto his foot and also grabbing onto Biggie Pooh’s foot… so cute!

So we had a busy day today. First we went to visit Vicki and also check out her new car. She let Simon test drive it.

He can barely see over the steering wheel while standing up.

Then we went to lunch at Kingdom of Dumpling near her house. We had a delicious and filling lunch.

Green onion pancakes which Ron says are very similar to the Taiwanese way, they were chewy but crisp.

We tried their tofu threads which were seasoned with a bit of soy sauce and cilantro. I wonder if these tofu “noodles” will work in soup or as a spaghetti?

The string beans were good, cooked al dente and dry fried.

Hot sweet soy milk. They also have salty soy milk.

We tried their steamed dumplings, this is 2 orders, each order is 6 pieces. They were pretty yummy, steaming hot and full of delicious juices.

Chive cakes.

Wide rice noodles with pork dumplings, mushrooms, and mustard greens. We were already too full when this finally arrived so I only had a little bit but the noodles and dumplings were delicious.

After lunch, we went to visit Ron’s mom in Millbrae. Simon had been fussy in the restaurant because he wanted to sleep but it was a bit too loud so once we got into the car, Simon tried to sleep. He ended up sucking on his fingers… and flipping me off.

Today is my dad’s birthday so we were going to have dinner at Hokkaido Seafood Buffet in Foster City/San Mateo so right before dinner, we dropped by our friends’ Sabrina and Min so that I could meet their boys Connor and Toby. The boys decided to hold a board meeting.

Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Last week, Simon had been mostly screeching but recently he’s been babbling again. Check it out:

CSCM looking for…

Day 151

CSCM = Cute Single Chinese Male looking for…

I can’t imagine the day when Simon has his first girlfriend… I hope it’s a long long time from now.

Ron found a good way for Simon to play with two toys at the same time, sitting in his Exersaucer next to his playmat propped up so that he can try to reach the toys.

Success!

From the newsdesk of Simon Chung:

I spent the day in Sonoma for my friend Kathleen’s bachelorette party. Her sister Colleen did a great job of organizing our relaxing day. We had a limo that took us around to a few wineries, had a picnic lunch at Imagery, relaxed by the hotel pool, and had dinner at Meritage. Imagery has two beautiful spots for picnics, a lawn with picnic tables set up and a patio area with many tables. They also have bocce ball although we did not have a chance to play. I prepared the lunch last night which included a broccoli quinoa salad with a sweet sour cream based dressing, zucchini orzo with basil salad, cheese and crackers with cold cuts, veggies with Ranch dressing, blueberries, and apricots. I didn’t get my own picture of the lunch so I hope someone else did but I did get a good group shot of everyone by our limo. Our driver Lee did a great job driving us around and taking photos for us.

Two feet on the ground

Day 150

Simon seems to be stretching out a bit more. Both of his feet can actually touch the ground while in the Exersaucer. He no longer needs the extra piece of foam to stand on. He still curls his toes though.

Ron took this picture of Simon to showcase his growing belly!

Since Simon likes to watch TV, Ron let Simon watch a bit of “Baby Can Read” videos. He seemed to enjoy it.

Just a cute photo of Simon sitting on Ron’s stomach.

I think I’ve mentioned that Simon is becoming more interested in the cats so Ron shot this video of Simon intently watching Mochi grooming herself while on the cat tree. He also takes some interest as Misu walks across his view. I hope that Simon does not start to imitate Mochi…

Ron and Simon came again to pick me up and brought some delicious tapioca (aka pearl) drinks for me and my coworkers. My favorite is the avocado smoothie and my favorite place to get it at is Sweetheart Cafe. The original is in Oakland Chinatown and there is also shops in SF Chinatown, Berkeley, and Milpitas. If you like fresh, sweet, chewy pearls, you’ll like this place. They also use real fruits for their drinks rather than powders. They also have a great hot grass jelly drink where you can choose the add-ins like taro, rice balls, sesame balls, red bean, green bean, etc. It was a good afternoon treat.

It wasn’t time for me to get off work yet so Ron went to the Starbucks nearby to wait with Simon. It was chilly so Simon was bundled up.

Eventually he got fussy so they went back to the parked car and Ron had Simon practice sitting up inside his car seat. He’s building more stomach muscles so if he falls backwards, he can sometimes pull himself back up into a seated position.

We think Simon has started recognizing himself in mirrors. He seems really excited looking at himself in the backseat mirror we have in the car. The mirror is for him and also for us to see him in our rearview mirror.

Sitting up

Day 149

I had a little playtime with Simon in the morning so I had him practice sitting up. He can’t quite do it by himself yet so I used Moo-Moo the cow to kind of prop him up.

He is learning to use his arms to push himself up but he still falls over.

After I went to work, Ron was still a bit tired so had Simon hold his own bottle… just kidding! He’s just practicing keeping the bottle in his mouth.

Simon’s Outfit of the Day (OOTD – Ron’s acronym for Simon’s many wardrobe changes). I love the little footsies and his cute smile.

Ron created a place for Simon to play with his toys. The BUMBO tray isn’t big enough since Simon usually throws the toys off and they end up on the floor and he ends up whining since he can’t reach them. Using the Boppy Pillow makes a bigger space around him so it’s harder to toss the toys on the ground. Simon is accumulating quite a few toys.

Ron and Simon came to visit me at work but had to wait a bit as I finished up a last minute preparation. They waited for me in our waiting room and Ron entertained Simon by rocking him back and forth in his car seat. Apparently he was really entertained with the motion… maybe he’ll like roller coasters in the future.

It was a long day but it’s all worth it to come home to this little guy.
