Outing alone with Simon

Day 59

I rely on Ron a lot when we go out with Simon so I thought I’d try to take a short trip with him by myself.  Since I was only going to Borders, which is a few blocks away, I probably didn’t need his diaper bag but I brought it just in case and stuffed my wallet and phone in it.  I didn’t want to handle the Snap’n’go down the front steps so strapped Simon into the Baby Bjorn.

He was having a fussy day so probably wasn’t the best day to take him on a walk but he enjoyed the wind on his face and calmed down when we were outside.  He only fussed while we were in the store.  I think because the second floor in the children’s section was overheated.  He also wanted to eat but only 1 oz at a time, every 30-60 minutes.  We don’t understand his eating habits, sometimes he can guzzle 3 oz at one time and sometimes he only wants to snack.  He had eaten before we left but it was a good thing I prepared a bottle for our outing.  I’m not sure how I would manage to unstrap him from the Baby Bjorn and breastfeed him while he was fussing… I will have to practice that.

We made it home okay with no major meltdowns.  The walk uphill to our apartment building was good exercise, it got my heart rate going.  I was really warm though with Simon against my chest, he and I were both a bit sweaty.

Simon really likes to stick out his tongue at us now.

I wonder if this will be trouble when he starts eating solid food.  I can imagine him pushing the food out of his mouth with his tongue… what a mess that will be!

At home with mommy

Day 58

Simon was quite active this afternoon.  He was smiling up a storm.

My friend Suanty asked me why Simon never wears socks or mittens.  Well, we never put on mittens since we want him to explore his hands but he does have plenty of socks.  These are thanks to my co-worker Ed who (for some reason) had a whole bag of these Trumpette socks in various different colors and styles.  They are the best socks since they hardly ever slip off and are super cute.

Here is Misu checking out Simon while he is playing on his playmat.  I got this photo “mid-lick”… he was just grooming himself, not thinking that Simon was a tasty morsel.

Simon has a super high forehead and really big eyes.  I really think he looks like an alien sometimes!

IMG_1458.JPG

The other day I got a Balboa Baby sling because I wanted to try something besides the Baby Bjorn.  The Baby Bjorn is probably more comfortable with the lumbar support but can be cumbersome to put on when you have a squirming baby.  The sling seemed easy to put on so you can “wear” your baby and have more freedom with your arms.  Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m using it right since Simon seems super squished inside and his legs/feet seem in an uncomfortable position.  Although, he didn’t seem to mind as he was smiling up at me.

IMG_1462.JPG

I will have to try it again when he is less squirmy.  I like that it is lighter and softer material.  I know there was a recent warning and/or recall about slings because babies have suffocated in them but I think that was more with newborns who aren’t able to turn their head easily so their nose and mouth gets pressed up against mom or the fabric.  I think as long as you are watching you baby and are conscious of him breathing, it should be okay to use.  I think it’d also be nice for breastfeeding as it sort of holds him in the correct position and also works as a nursing cover.  We’ll see if we keep this…

I’m really in love with the smiles and talking this week!

Wah!!

Day 57

This afternoon we went to lunch with Ron’s dad at Moonstar Buffet in Daly City.  They have mostly Chinese food and sushi rolls but they also have a few salads, ice cream, cakes, chocolate fondue, and more.

I had two plates of food:

They also had a papaya and white fungus dessert soup and I ate plenty since papaya is supposed to help breast milk production.  Let’s hope it works!

We met up with Ron’s dad since he wanted some advice on what to get for Simon when he comes to visit.  So we headed over to Babies”R”Us after lunch and picked up a few things.

Simon sleeps very well in his car seat so sometimes we use it at home to rock him to sleep.  The only bad thing about having him sleep in the car seat is that he seems to have trouble pooping after he wakes up so can get kind of cranky.  Here is him sleeping soundly:

Then all of a sudden, “Wah!” while he is having a bad dream.  He went back to sleep after this.  It’s funny to see his frowns and smiles while asleep.

Simon loves to jump up and down (with support) while standing on our laps.  His head still lolls around a bit so we still have to support it while he is bending and straightening his legs.  He needs to work on his core muscles so that he can help to support his upper body.

Diaper cake?

Day 56

In the last few days, it seems like Simon’s eyelashes had a growth spurt!  They seem so much longer than when he was first born and are even longer than just a few days ago.  So pretty.

IMG_1423.JPG

We received this cool gift from one of the pharmacy technicians at my work.  She’s the “social chair” of our department since she plans all the birthday and holiday parties for us.  I think this is what is called a “diaper cake” and it has two layers.  I’m amazed that she rolled up each diaper, tied each one with a ribbon, then formed this cake.  She also included some bibs, a Hello Kitty thermometer, and some teething toys.  The diapers are super cute too, they have little chicks on them.  I wonder what brand they are?

This is the bottom layer of the cake.  Unfortunately the diapers are newborn size so they don’t fit Simon so I think we will end up giving these away to a lucky new mom.

Simon was quite a handful today.  He fooled us yesterday into thinking he was ready to sleep through the night when he slept 5 hours straight.  This morning I woke up around 4am to nurse and he continued waking up every hour until about 9am.  I fell asleep many times with him still on the boob.  He didn’t seem to mind as he was sleeping soundly in my arms each time I woke up.  I think my milk production is more abundant but the let-down is too slow for him so he gets fussy.  I had to give him a bottle a few times today of the breast milk I expressed since he kept on fussing and wouldn’t settle down to nurse.  Ron also went out during the late afternoon so I didn’t have time to catch a nap.  But his cute face keeps me going!  Look at that stare… aren’t you mesmerized?

IMG_1426.JPG

Tonight I think I really need to get some rest so I’m just going to pump every 2 hours and let Ron feed Simon using that milk.  I started fenugreek capsules yesterday so it may be helping but I still need some sleep and more fluids.  Water does a body good!  Slowly but surely things are improving.  I just have to have more confidence and not stress so much.  Thank you to all those experienced moms out there for the advice, just hearing experiences from friends helps to boost my confidence.

Sleeping through the night?

Day 55

Simon surprised us last night by sleeping 5 hours straight!  This is the longest duration he has ever slept continuously.  We didn’t know if we should wake him up to eat.  We ended up deciding against it and just let him sleep.  Before falling asleep, he nursed for a long time (probably about 2 hours) and we ended up having to give him a bottle of expressed breast milk before he was content enough to fall asleep.  I slept while he slept but woke up before him to pump.  I’m making some progress on the breast milk production but it is still not where I want it.

Once again Simon caught me by surprise while I was changing his diaper.  Apparently he peed while I wasn’t looking and although it did not hit him in the head (I had a Kleenex covering him), it leaked onto his shirt so he needed a change of clothes.  Check out his cute little animal paw socks!

Thank you Auntie Betty for the jumpsuit and thank you Auntie Virginia and Uncle Dan for the paw socks.
