Troubled sleep

Day 34

Simon had trouble napping today. His naps would only last 30-60 minutes then he would wake up and be fussy, wanting to eat, to burp, to have his diaper changed, or entertained. On days like these I’m afraid that I won’t be produce enough milk for him but thank goodness I already have a whole bunch stored away in the freezer that we can defrost.

Simon did not enjoy lying on his back so I sat him up leaning against my abdomen and sitting on my thighs.

We finally broke down and bought a baby monitor and so far it has been great. There are so many out there that it was hard to pick one but the MobiCam Digital Wireless Monitor seemed to have the best reviews and didn’t cost an arm and a leg ($160 at BabiesRUs.com). I guess being new parents, we are still a bit nervous so want to be able to see Simon while he is sleeping in his bassinet. The picture is pretty clear during day and night. The sound can be a bit screeching at times but it catches your attention.

Since he had troubled sleep most of the day, he was basically taking cat naps wherever he could. In the following instance, he didn’t want to lay on my chest so kind of crawled his way to my belly and burrowed his face into his own hand to sleep. I was afraid he couldn’t breathe but I guess that’s why he propped up his face with his fist.

Here’s Maxwell checking out Simon sleeping on my tummy. Maxwell will be 12 years old soon. One of the great things about being a cat is that you can’t tell their age by looking at them.

Ron is exercising Simon’s legs, back, and neck. Ron is convinced we can have Simon walking sooner rather than later.

I don’t want him walking around too fast, we’re not ready to childproof the apartment yet and I’m not sure we could keep up with him!

Rainy Easter Sunday

Day 33

Days with Simon seem to go by so fast. When it’s 12 o’clock, I always wonder where the morning went. Simon was a little troublemaker this morning though, he didn’t want to go back to sleep… or actually I should say, he couldn’t go back to sleep because he was overly tired. He didn’t sleep from 2am to 5am because he was up fussing and cried each time Ron tried to put him down to sleep. He was fed, clean, and burped but just couldn’t get himself to fall asleep. He just really wanted to be comforted and held before falling asleep. Ron stayed up with him and sent me back to bed since I was really exhausted, probably because I did not have an afternoon nap.

Although Simon was fine during the rest of the day and slept well and ate well. We took him out to visit Susan and Ken since they were having a small get together at their apartment. He almost always falls asleep in the car seat. His head seems to finally fit into the head rest.

He fell asleep in my arms when we got home, look at his chubby arm. Don’t you just want to pinch it?

We bought Simon a mobile made by Fisher Price for his playpen. Ron had to cut a hole in the fabric on the side of the playpen in order to attach the mobile since the adapter is meant for a crib that has wooden slats.

When he is awake, he seems to enjoy looking at the projector lights and turning mobile and when sleeping, the heartbeat sounds seems to help him to keep calm and stay asleep.

Saturday Excursions

Day 32 – Banana Island, Grandpa Chung, New buddy Derek, and Todam Tofu House

Today we spent the afternoon out and about in Daly City, South San Francisco, Burlingame, and San Bruno.

He fell asleep in the car seat on our way out. I dressed him up in his UC Berkeley gear, a onesie and his navy blue sweatshirt. He’s almost growing out of the sweatshirt so I wanted him to wear it at least one more time before he does. Unfortunately I did not get a really good picture of it as he is all bundled up.

We had lunch at Banana Island in Daly City since I had a craving for roti served with a curry dipping sauce. The roti is made by the cook at a open view kitchen area in the middle of the restaurant. It’s pretty interesting to watch them stretch out the dough very thinly by throwing it in the air.

We also had beef rendang. The meat was tender but not that spicy. The cucumbers were also a bit dry looking.

Hokkien Mee which is a thick yellow noodle with some squid, shrimp, some meat, some veggies, topped with fried onions.

After lunch, we headed to see Grandpa Chung. As soon as we got there, Simon woke up and was hungry. We had Grandpa feed him his bottle. Simon doesn’t usually drink everything in one sitting but this time he must have been really hungry as he drank about 100ml (3+ ounces) at one time, needed a diaper change and burping before drinking another 30ml (1 ounce).

We then went to visit Al and Derek in Burlingame. We hung out for a while and Ron and I learned about what to expect when Simon is 7 months old (Derek’s age). We decided to go out for dinner so went to Todam Tofu House in San Bruno. We had the bulgogi and kimchi tofu soup. I love their purple rice, so yummy!

Simon was sleeping during out dinnertime but I wanted to get one picture with his new buddy Derek before leaving the restaurant.

Simon had a long day out and about and konked out again after eating and changing his clothes. His outfit matches his blanket!

Happy 1-month old birthday!

Day 31

I can’t believe Simon is already 1-month old! He’s growing up so fast. I almost wish he would stop so that I can have more time to enjoy this time in his life. Although I am looking forward to him interacting more with us and other milestones like talking, walking, etcetera.

But he is growing up fast… this shirt is almost too small for him because of his growing belly and fattening arms. The shirt keeps on riding up his chest and back like a crop top.

We had a relatively quiet day as Simon spent a lot of the day catching some Zzz’s. He has a peculiar habit of “peeking” while falling asleep.

I think to check to make sure we’re still around before falling into a deep sleep.

One of my favorite Simon positions is when he burrows his face into my neck and falls asleep.

Simon Day 30 – Thinking of the beach?

Looks like Simon is having a pleasant sleep… maybe he’s dreaming on relaxing on the beach, enjoying the sun, and drinking a Kahlua with milk cocktail? 😛

Actually this picture was taken after we had taken a shopping trip to Macy’s to buy some kitchenware (thanks to the GC given to us by Ron’s cousin) so we had stayed out for about 2 hours. Once we arrived home and Simon was no longer feeling the air on his face and the bumps of the stroller, he woke up fussy and hungry. After he finished eating, he seemed to be having a difficult bowel movement because he was straining and crying. He was crying enough to make himself completely red-faced. He continued to cry after we changed his diaper after his successful bowel movement… then promptly fell asleep. I never knew pooping could cause a baby so much pain… We wonder if it may have been more difficult this time because he had been sitting in the stroller seat too long, all scrunched up, so his poop could not move freely through his intestines?

At least he looks happy in his sleep 🙂
