R&G Lounge

We met up with a friend at R&G Lounge for lunch. She recently came from Singapore to work and wanted to get together to thank us for helping her get settled in (although we really didn’t do much).

This is a salmon avocado egg roll. It was tinier than I anticipated, each half was only about one bite. It wasn’t my favorite dish, I think as a fresh spring roll would have tasted better.

This is their secret recipe beef. A bit sweet, kind of carmelized and sort of tasting like moist beef jerky but good.

They called this spicy X.O. chicken. It wasn’t spicy but had a good X.O. sauce flavor. I was pleasantly surprised that it was served with snap peas.

This is called Three Treasures with Black Bean Sauce. They are stuffed fried tofu, eggplant, and peppers. They are stuffed with shrimp paste. The red and green peppers were good, they were the spicy peppers, not bell peppers.

The restaurant gave us a coupon for $25 off our next meal (of $50 or more). Thanks to Helen for treating us to lunch! Next time it’ll be on us.

Good Luck Dim Sum

This morning we had our first dentist appt in a long time, probably 3 years. Our dentist was very kind and thorough. Our friends who are dentists recommended him to us. He was one of their professors and I can understand why he is one of their favorite professors. If you’re looking for a new dentist, I think he is still accepting new patients, his name is Dr. Robert Ho. Unfortunately for me, I have two small cavities and I cracked a back molar and need a crown. I’ll keep you updated on how the further appts go, I have to go back in a week for the cavity fillings and preparation for the crown.

Afterwards, since his office is on 12th Ave near Clement, we had the opportunity to go to one of our favorite cheap take-out dim sum places called Good Luck Dim Sum. We were lucky to find a parking space right in front but unfortunately had to wait in a pretty long and slow line. I kept on having to go in and out to fill the parking meter because it seems like the ladies were being unusually slow this morning. I guess they had big orders to fill though for Chinese New Year because there were pick-up tickets taped on the cupboards, one stating 30 orders of one item, 34 orders of another item, with an additional 4 items on just that one ticket.

We finally go our food and went home to enjoy. We had 3 boxes full of food for $32.

My favorite “ham shui gok” (fried chewy meat dumplings, direct translation is “salty water dumpling” I think), sesame balls, “dan tat” (egg tarts) made with egg yolks and egg whites.

“Ha gow” (shrimp dumplings), “siu mai”, and chive dumplings.

In this box were the two types of “cha siu bao”, steamed and baked, plus “lai wong bao” (egg custard buns), and chinese sausage buns.

We filled ourselves and saved some for my breakfast next week. That satisfied my craving for dim sum, especially my favorite “ham shui gok”!

Fort Bragg and Spices! (Take 2)

Sigh, it was time to head back to SF. Before we left though, we stopped at Cowlick’s Ice Cream Cafe. At the pizza place last night they had Cowlick’s ice cream on the menu but we were too stuffed to order it. Instead we figured we stop by here for lunch and dessert!

We had a chili dog and then ordered their special pumpkin dessert. It’s a warm pumpkin cookie served with pumpkin ice cream, caramel sauce, whipped cream, carmelized pecans, and a cherry on top! Yum Yum!

It took us about 3 hours to get back to the Golden Gate Bridge and took us another 20 minutes alone to cross it, there was so much traffic!

After cleaning up at home, we went out to dinner with Kat & Jon to Spices! again on 8th Avenue. We ordered more dishes this time around since we had more people.

This is Lion’s Head. A bit weird because it seemed to have a lot of filler.

This was the cumin spiced lamb. I don’t know if any of us really liked it, the gamey flavor of the lamb still shined through.

This is their version of cold noodles. The sauce had lots of chili oil and the noodles a bit too chewy. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the one that San Tung makes.

Dumplings. Overall nothing much to say.

The star of the meal again was the fried stinky tofu…

Ugh, must exercise more this week…

Spices!

I went for a workout at the UCSF Mission Bay Bakar Fitness Center. The gym is so nice and new, I wish we lived closer to it. I wanted to try out the Samba class and convinced Tiffany to go with me. Man, we felt inadequate 😛 It was our first time and the class was full, there were a lot of other people in the class who were really good. Surprisingly for flailing around, we broke a sweat and had a pretty good workout I think. Not sure if I’d try it again but I won’t rule it out. I just wish there would be more direction on how to do the dance moves rather than just watch it once, then do it. The next class to try will be hip-hop.

Since the class didn’t end until 8:30pm, we didn’t really feel like going home to cook so Ron and I decided to visit Spices! but the other store on 8th Avenue because we heard they had stinky tofu.

We ordered a rather healthy dinner for the two of us, some stir fried green veggies with garlic, the stinky tofu, and sticky rice with mushrooms. Surprisingly we ended up with a vegetarian dinner. I’m sure Ron is going to eat a hot dog or something tonight.

So here is the fried stinky tofu served a a garlic sweet spicy sauce and pickled vegetables. Ron commented that the tofu was cut well, in that they were not huge cubes that could not soak up all the sauce. We’ve eaten it at other places where you have to double-dip because not enough sauce stays on the tofu.

This is the sticky rice with mushrooms. Something to fill us up rather than eating proteins.

Ron says, “can we eat stinky tofu every night?”

I wouldn’t say every night but once in a while is good. They have a large menu but they don’t always have everything on the menu so we’re likely to go back soon. We’re slowly finding the good Taiwanese restaurants in the area.

Koi Garden – fresh lobster

I spent the day at my parents’ house in San Ramon. They kindly let me use their washer and dryer to do my laundry, saved me from using all my quarters 🙂 We went out together for dinner at Koi Garden because my parents had just recently been there for the delicious lobster. The restaurant was experimenting with a lobster “three-ways”: sashimi, rice, and stir-fried.

The sashimi was delicious with a bit of lime, wasabi, and soy sauce. The texture is a bit crunchy but also like fish.

My parents were already experts at this so they asked for a pot of hot sharkfin flavored broth to poach the lobster and lettuce. The soup was tasty and warmed us all up. I preferred the lobster meat raw though, the fresh flavor was more pronounced.

My dad compared the rice dish to a Spanish paella, except this was curry flavored and very much Asian.

I didn’t care for it as much, a bit too many onions, not enough other vegetables, and not enough sauce for all the rice.

My phone camera went on the fritz and I couldn’t take a picture of the last “way” which was stir fried with green onions. Tasty but a mess to eat.

A very satisfying dinner with my family.
