Learning to drive

Day 152

I caught Simon this morning grabbing onto his foot and also grabbing onto Biggie Pooh’s foot… so cute!

So we had a busy day today. First we went to visit Vicki and also check out her new car. She let Simon test drive it.

He can barely see over the steering wheel while standing up.

Then we went to lunch at Kingdom of Dumpling near her house. We had a delicious and filling lunch.

Green onion pancakes which Ron says are very similar to the Taiwanese way, they were chewy but crisp.

We tried their tofu threads which were seasoned with a bit of soy sauce and cilantro. I wonder if these tofu “noodles” will work in soup or as a spaghetti?

The string beans were good, cooked al dente and dry fried.

Hot sweet soy milk. They also have salty soy milk.

We tried their steamed dumplings, this is 2 orders, each order is 6 pieces. They were pretty yummy, steaming hot and full of delicious juices.

Chive cakes.

Wide rice noodles with pork dumplings, mushrooms, and mustard greens. We were already too full when this finally arrived so I only had a little bit but the noodles and dumplings were delicious.

After lunch, we went to visit Ron’s mom in Millbrae. Simon had been fussy in the restaurant because he wanted to sleep but it was a bit too loud so once we got into the car, Simon tried to sleep. He ended up sucking on his fingers… and flipping me off.

Today is my dad’s birthday so we were going to have dinner at Hokkaido Seafood Buffet in Foster City/San Mateo so right before dinner, we dropped by our friends’ Sabrina and Min so that I could meet their boys Connor and Toby. The boys decided to hold a board meeting.

Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Last week, Simon had been mostly screeching but recently he’s been babbling again. Check it out:

Ferry Building Excursion

Day 123

After a long first week at work, all I needed was a little more sleep and to be able to spend time with Simon instead of rushing off to work.  His sweet little face (and funny expressions) make it all worth it.  “Yo, mama, what’s going down?”

Ron is still trying to train Simon to hold his own bottle and most of the time he’s able to hold it.  It seems hard for him to hold onto it though when it is near empty and sometimes he flails his arms and drops it or tosses it to the ground.  Ron likes taking silly pictures of Simon for Facebook.

Simon and I had an excursion planned out to meet with friends at the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market.  Karla, Brandon, and their son Miles are visiting from Santa Barbara so we met up with them for coffee and lunch.  It’s been 5 years since we’ve seen each other and both of us have adorable little boys now.

Simon was having a bit of an off-day, probably from the vaccines but Miles was a cheerful happy baby the entire time.  We had iced coffee from Blue Bottle (yum!) and a light lunch at Delica, a Japanese deli.  I had their ma po tofu salad which had romaine lettuce, noodles, minced pork, and a bit of spices but wasn’t spicy overall.  A bit pricey too, $12/lb so a full pint container was $9.60.  But they have fresh strawberry mochi and I bought one ($2.75) to try but haven’t had a chance to dig in just yet.

It was really nice catching up and talking about our babies but Simon and I had to make our exit when he started to cry his head off.  Not sure why he did but he probably realized he was really tired and wanted to go to sleep.  On our walk home, he took a little nap and was more pleasant when we arrived home.  It was good to get out and good exercise for me since I hadn’t been walking all week.  It’s a little over a mile there and takes about 20-25 minutes to walk.

Simon had a nice long 2 hour nap when we arrived home and was quite a bit more cheerful.  He hasn’t been eating much today, it seems like his appetite is down again just like the last time he had shots.  He wore this outfit today from Auntie Virginia, his version of wearing a shirt and tie.

photo.jpg

So now he had a shirt and tie onesie or a black tuxedo bib to look dressed up for special occasions.  He actually does have other outfits like button down shirts and a fake tie (the ones that are like a necklace) but they’re still a little too big so will have to wait until he is older.

It was a beautiful day in SF today and I was glad to be able to enjoy it outside with Simon.  The farmer’s market was pretty crowded but it was fun since they had lots of samples out of peaches, nectarines, figs (yum!), blueberries, cherries, etc.  I picked up some organic nectarines and peaches as these are at the top of the list for still having pesticides on them.  We picked up a list from Simon’s doctor yesterday that has a list of which fruits and vegetables should be bought organic because of their high pesticide content and also a list of fruits and vegetables that are low in pesticide content so it’s not necessary to buy organic.

The list is available at FoodNews.org called “The Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides”.

Skechers Shape-ups and Sushi Rika

Day 73

This afternoon I went for a walk with Simon in my new Skechers Shape-ups.  I’m not sure if the shoes are just a gimmick but I figured it doesn’t hurt to try them out.  The only thing is probably hurts is your wallet as the shoes are about $100.  I took a break in Union Square before heading home and once I got up I could feel a little soreness in my calves and thighs so perhaps they really are doing something.  It’s an interesting feeling walking with these shoes, it’s a bit awkward at first since it is kind of sponge-like.  They are supposed to simulate walking on sand which is thought to take more effort and it also takes more effort to keep your balance on these shoes.

I hope wearing these will improve my posture and help me lose a few more pounds.  It was really easy to shed about 80% of my pregnancy weight but these last 20% (~6 lbs) is still taking some work.  I need to find some more time to do some actual working-out.

Plus I probably should go back to a higher protein, lower carbohydrate diet.  Although we didn’t follow that when we went for dinner at Sushi Rika tonight.  I have missed sushi because of the rice and the raw fish.  The restaurant is very close to where we live and I bought a Groupon a few weeks ago for $20 for $40 worth of food so we thought we’d finally try it tonight since neither of us felt like cooking.

Without realizing it, the specialty rolls we ordered were all fried.  My bad.  Next time I want to try their sashimi over rice dish.  But for tonight, the rolls were delicious although the fish was probably a bit masked by all the sauces on the rolls.

Jumping Tail Roll.  A little sweet, a little spicy and with a nice little salad in the middle.

photo.jpg

Dynamite Roll.  The asparagus was quite refreshing.

photo.jpg

India Express.  There was a bit of curry powder mixed in somewhere, a bit light but nice.  Nice presentation.

photo.jpg

We also ordered the hamachi kama appetizer, always a favorite of ours.

photo.jpg

Overall, our tummies were satisfied.  The size of the rolls were good for the price (~$10 per roll).  They also have Happy Hour everyday from 5-8pm on beer and hot sake.  Unfortunately we didn’t get the happy hour special because it was one of the restrictions for the Groupon so we paid full price for a bottle of sake.  Since all these rolls were cooked, I would be interested to see how their raw fish dishes taste.  Even though it is so close by, I’m not sure when we will be back since the service was kind of spotty.  This was actually our second attempt to eat here since when we tried a few weeks back, there was a bunch of people waiting although there were empty tables that just needed to be cleaned.  At that time they told us the wait was still going to be an hour so we decided to leave.  During this visit, we felt like they were trying to get rid of us as soon as possible after we finished eating.  Maybe they were unhappy we were using a Groupon?  Even so, they shouldn’t act any different than if we were regular customers.  Why else sign up with Groupon?

Simon’s 1st vacation: Southern California – Day 3

Day 68 (Mother’s Day)

For lunch we went to Daikokuya, a Japanese ramen joint highly recommended by many friends that they have excellent tonkotsu ramen (pork bone broth).  They open at 12pm on Sundays and we arrived at 11:40am and there were already two other parties waiting.  As we were waiting for the doors to open, a line continued to form, maybe 10-12 other parties.  When they did open, they were ulatra efficient.  They seated everyone then one waitress came to take drink orders then food orders and the cooks started to cook so everything came out quickly.

We ordered the ramen, one bowl regular and one with kotteri broth (more fragrant, made with pork back fat).  One was a combo with the shredded pork bowl.  The ramen was so yummy!  I usually do not to drink the broth but this one I wanted to drink it all… but was too full so couldn’t.  The shredded pork bowl was interesting, sort of like the grilled eel sauce on pork.  It is worth waiting in line for this ramen.

After lunch, we headed to The Grove and The Farmers Market.  It was probably a mistaken to go so soon after lunch since we were stuffed but we just walked around and explored.  The Farmers Market is sort of like a food court with many different food stalls.  We walked around The Grove shopping center to make ourselves less full for Bennett’s ice cream.  They were doing a promotional event for the movie Despicable Me so we got our picture taken against with this backdrop.  Simon is yawning as he had just woken up.

photo.jpg

There were also this little people dressed up as the minions in the movie.  Kind of hilarious.

IMG_0112.JPG

After working up a bit of an appetite, we went back for ice cream.  The top is cabernet sauvignon sorbet and the bottom is peach ice cream.  The cab sorbet was yummy and refreshing.  The peach only so-so.  Simon looks like he wants some, doesn’t he?

IMG_0113.JPG

We drove to Pasadena to have dinner in the evening.  We tried this place called Daisy Mint that was recommended by Betty for their Daisy Noodles.  So we ordered the duck roll, kind of like mushu skin wrapped duck.

IMG_0116.JPG

This is the Daisy Noodles.  It is sort of drenched in a sweet coconut curry-like sauce.  It tasted good except the noodles were congeeled together so hard to separate to eat.  It was like they let the noodles sit in the pot too long and they got all stuck together.

IMG_0114.JPG

We also had the Green Jungle curry with chicken.  It also had eggplant, green beans, green and red bell peppers.  Nice and spicy.  Served with brown rice.

IMG_0115.JPG

The restaurant closes at 9pm but they let us stay there until 9:45pm.  They have this little back patio with heat lamps which was nice since it seemed quieter than inside the restaurant.  Once again, Simon slept through dinner.  I hope this is a pattern but I doubt it.  He got extremely fussy before we left for dinner and was screaming and wasn’t easy to calm down.  He had been sleeping before we arrived to the hotel and I suggested to Ron to move him from his car seat to the bed to be more comfortable.  Bad idea as he woke up and started screaming.  We know never to do that now, just leave him to sleep where he is sleeping.  He eventually calmed down and fell asleep again but spent quite some time whimpering.  It makes me so sad when we can’t figure out how to make him content again.

Oh yes, it is Mother’s Day!  We didn’t really celebrate since Ron says that it is Simon’s job when he’s older.  I look forward to receiving my first Mother’s Day wish from Simon.

Home with daddy

Day 47

Simon stayed home with Ron today while I went to have a massage at Claremont Hotel Club and Spa in Berkeley.  My friend Vicki planned this girls’ day out of relaxation.  I was sad to leave Simon for the day and almost cried as I gave him a kiss goodbye… I didn’t think it would be so hard to leave for just a few hours.  But I knew he would be in good hands with Ron so looked forward to a relaxing day with the girls.

His cute little sleeping face as I left this morning.

photo.jpg

We had breakfast at The Bread Garden Bakery (across the street from the Claremont Hotel) and Peet’s Coffee.  The bakery had a bit of a passive-aggressive sign posted on it’s storefront window.

photo.jpg

I had a delicious apple turnover and bought some extra cookies for home.  Can’t wait to get into them!

While I was gone, Simon had a visit from Ron’s mom and brother William.  Simon looks a bit concerned…

DSC_0267.JPG

After I got home around 6pm, Ron’s niece Arial came for a visit and we went to dinner together at Katana-ya.  I wasn’t supposed to eat uni (sea urchin) while I was pregnant so finally got to indulge a bit tonight.

Simon is looking at me and says, “What ARE you eating mommy??”

Also, to note, his baby acne has gotten a lot better, he just has one big pimple above his left eyebrow.

Here is Arial holding Simon.

All in all, a good way to end a beautiful weekend in the bay area. The spa was nice and relaxing (albeit a bit more expensive than I’m used to but a very nice atmosphere) and a good time catching up with girlfriends. Simon and Ron had an eventful day with visiting with family and both should rest well tonight.
