China Bee Restaurant

Before taking Ron to the airport, we went for brunch at China Bee in San Mateo. We’ve heard from friends that they have yummy Taiwanese breakfast so thought we’d finally try it out. We ordered quite a bit to sample our favorite dishes.

Sweet soy milk, rice roll, pickled spicy cucumbers, and salty soy milk. The salty soy milk was properly made (according to Ron) where the milk is curdled and filled with crunchy fried dough and green onion and preserved vegetables. The rice roll didn’t have enough meat for Ron and I thought the pickled cucumbers were a bit over-pickled.

The fried stinky tofu. The sauce and vegetables were good, tofu nicely fried, but not all that stinky. Overall still good though as I liked the crunch it had.

Egg crepe. Ron thought the wrapper was machine made so not that good and there wasn’t any sauce so it was a bit dry.

Oyster pancake, I thought was yummy. Ron found it too fishy flavored. I liked whatever the red sauce was on top.

Last but not least, xiao long bao. They were really good when hot but not so tasty as it started to cool down. The wrapper was a bit thick but the juice with the meat inside was pretty good.

We’re not sure if we’d drive all the way to San Mateo again for breakfast since you can get similar quality at Taiwan Restaurant in SF.

Capital Restaurant & Yogurt Circle

Ron and I had lunch in Chinatown today at Capital Restaurant. He said they are famous for their salt & pepper chicken wings so we ordered that plus a bowl of BBQ pork wonton noodles.

The chicken wings were nice and crispy and very salty and peppery (a bit too much for me). The meat was very juicy and tender.

The noodles were a bit overcooked for me, I like them al dente but the broth was good and the wontons decent. The BBQ pork was a bit fatty but then Ron said he might have eaten all the non-fatty pieces.

Overall it was an okay lunch but I’m just not that big a fan of salt & pepper chicken wings. The restaurant seemed clean and overall the service was efficient.

Finding ourselves in Daly City, we had a snack at Yogurt Circle at Westlake Shopping Center. Now that I’ve discovered that frozen yogurt has less carbohydrates than I originally thought, I’ve been sort of craving for it since I can’t really eat too much ice cream (too much lactose and sugar). It’s 39 cents per ounce self serve so I chose mango tart and strawberry-banana yogurt topped with mochi and slivered almonds, this bowl was about $2.50.

They also have a stamp card for buy 6, get the 7th bowl free. I might be back…

Korea House and SFSPCA Macy’s Window

We had dinner at Korea House in Japantown. I think we’ve been there before because the place looks familiar but it’s probably been many years. It was only 5pm so the place was pretty empty. We were a bit shocked by the price of the food.

Everything comes with rice, side dishes, and tea.
Sorry for the blurry picture of the side dishes, I must have moved my hand while I snapped it.

Their best side dishes were the kimchi, bean sprouts, fish cake, potatoes and turnips.

We ordered the bulgolgi ($19.95) which came out already cooked. You have to order 2 or more barbeque dishes to cook at your table. It had a really nice flavor (strong in sesame & sweet) and very tender.

Also, we got the soon dubu with pork ($12.95) because it was a cold day and we wanted something bubbling hot. It came over super hot and the broth was delicious. Tons of tofu and large pieces of pork. Ron guesses the broth has lots of finely chopped garlic because the broth was very flavorful.

After we got home I went for a walk downtown. My NP encouraged me to walk at least 30 minutes after dinner every day so I started yesterday. I make an effort to pass by Macy’s so that I have something to look forward to during my walk. We’ll see how long I can keep it up. If I see cute animals like this every evening, I’m sure I can keep at it.

A tired puppy taking a nap.

A regal looking kitty taking a rest in the back next to its litter box.

It was a chilly evening but a good walk. I had to wear a jacket of Ron’s because I can no longer button or zip any of my own jackets…

Pho 2000

Ron and I went to dinner at Pho 2000 because I had a craving for pho and it was the only place we could find that was open after 8pm in our neighborhood.

I ordered their bun bo hue, the usually spicy rice vermicelli noodle soup. I’m used to it having pork blood in it but this one did not. The noodles were good, like a rice spaghetti but it wasn’t spicy enough for me. Perhaps I’m more used to the version they make in a different region of Vietnam because this one used the red chili flakes in oil as the spice, I’m not used to having the flakes in the broth. But it satisfied my noodle craving.

Ron had the five spice chicken over rice.

I’m still in search of a good bun bo hue…

Sears Fine Foods, Hello Kitty at H&M, Asuka Ramen

Our Singapore roomie Justine is visiting so we met up for lunch at Sears Fine Foods. None of us have ever tried this restaurant but I’d heard plenty about their famous Swedish pancakes. They don’t take reservations for lunch and they won’t seat your party until everyone is there. The line wasn’t long except that they did ignore us for about 10 minutes when we were the only remaining people in line and there were plenty of open tables. Otherwise service at that the table was great.

I ordered one of their combination meals that comes with 9 pancakes, hash browns, 2 eggs, and corned beef hash. I ordered scrambled eggs. I liked the corned beef hash and the hash browns were nicely crisped. The pancakes were okay, nothing spectacular but they were really cute because of their size and easy to eat.

Ron ordered the Sloppy Joe.

Later in the afternoon, I went walking around the mall and checked out H&M and was pleasantly surprised they sell Hello Kitty clothes for little girls. So cute!

For dinner, Ron and I went to Asuka Ramen which is close to where we live. We tried some new things this time (since the first time I ate there, I got a stomach ache).

I tried the jajamen, noodles with sauce, some cucumbers and fish cake (no broth). It was pretty good, a Chinese style jajamen but I prefer the Korean style.

Ron had the curry over rice with tonkatsu. I didn’t try it but I assume it was pretty good since Ron ate it all without complaint.

We shared the agedashi tofu. Came out piping hot so that was great. The sauce was a bit oily but had good flavor.

I wish I got more Christmas shopping done today but I seem to get more tired easily so have to sit and rest. So I think I’d better start working on a list so I don’t waste so much time with browsing. Time is flying by, it’s almost Thanksgiving!
