Tiny Love Lights and Music Playmat

Day 49

Simon sometimes sleeps with his eyes slightly open… it’s kind of creepy. We think he’s pretty much asleep since he seems like he is dreaming with laughs and smiles. It’s not all the time so we know he can completely close his eyelids so we’re not quite sure what to make of it.

We received the Tiny Love Lights and Music Playmat today in the mail. I ordered it from Amazon sometime last week since Simon seemed like he needed some more entertainment although he seems content staring at the white walls and wall lights, we think he could do with some colors in his life. From reading reviews on Amazon, this is one of the better playmats since it can fold up pretty flat without dismantling it yet still has music, lights, and cute toys. Simon was entertained for about 15 minutes by the dangling giraffe and he seems to enjoy looking at himself in the mirror more. He still hasn’t advanced to grabbing at objects but I’m sure in time he will.

It costs about $50 at Amazon (and free super saver shipping) but it’s more than $60 at Babies”R”Us (not including shipping or a trip to the store). Thank you to The Leung family for the gift certificate for Amazon so that we could get this for Simon.

Burma Superstar Oakland

Day 48

As mentioned in yesterday’s post, I bought some cookies from The Bread Garden Bakery in Berkeley. From left to right, peanut butter, chocolate chip with walnuts, and something called “Crispie” (there is a dime at the bottom to show the size). Of the three, my favorite was the peanut butter cookie since it had delicious PB taste and was fabulous with a glass of cold milk. The Crispie was an interesting cookie, I think it may have tasted better freshly baked as it seemed a bit chewy, but that could also be due to the sugary sticky coating on the outside. The almonds were great on top though.

Here is Simon having Tummy Time!

Oops! Face plant!

For dinner, we met up with Dylan, Erica, and their almost 9 month old Maddie. We had a nice dinner at Burma Superstar in Oakland. The restaurant is on the smaller side but were able to accommodate us in the back table where we could put 2 infant car seats and 4 adults. It was our first time actually eating at a Burma Superstar; our past experience was with take-out from the San Francisco location.

White sangria with fuji apples, strawberries, orange, mint, and lychee. Light and refreshing.

This is the rainbow salad (mixed up already) which has 22 different ingredients. It was quite strong on the fried onion and garlic flavors and I think it was more of a noodle salad than a green salad.

Firey Vegetables with Tofu. It wasn’t overly spicy and I love the green beans cooked just right with still that lingering crisp.

Two portions of brown rice topped with fried onions.

Side order with garlic noodles. Yum!

Eggplant with garlic sauce. The leftover sauce went well with the brown rice.

Last but not least, lemongrass salmon. Delicious basil and fresh salmon.

To say the least, we were well fed and had a great time catching up. We talked a lot about our babies and now Ron and I have some more ideas of what to expect as Simon grows up since they’ve already experienced it.

After we got home from dinner, relaxing at home with mommy.

Looks like he might have some big feet!

Mochi and Misu are becoming more affectionate with each other. They seldom groom each other so seem to be doing it more. Poor things don’t have as much attention as they used to.

Simon asleep for now…

Home with daddy

Day 47

Simon stayed home with Ron today while I went to have a massage at Claremont Hotel Club and Spa in Berkeley.  My friend Vicki planned this girls’ day out of relaxation.  I was sad to leave Simon for the day and almost cried as I gave him a kiss goodbye… I didn’t think it would be so hard to leave for just a few hours.  But I knew he would be in good hands with Ron so looked forward to a relaxing day with the girls.

His cute little sleeping face as I left this morning.

We had breakfast at The Bread Garden Bakery (across the street from the Claremont Hotel) and Peet’s Coffee.  The bakery had a bit of a passive-aggressive sign posted on it’s storefront window.

I had a delicious apple turnover and bought some extra cookies for home.  Can’t wait to get into them!

While I was gone, Simon had a visit from Ron’s mom and brother William.  Simon looks a bit concerned…

After I got home around 6pm, Ron’s niece Arial came for a visit and we went to dinner together at Katana-ya.  I wasn’t supposed to eat uni (sea urchin) while I was pregnant so finally got to indulge a bit tonight.

Simon is looking at me and says, “What ARE you eating mommy??”

Also, to note, his baby acne has gotten a lot better, he just has one big pimple above his left eyebrow.

Here is Arial holding Simon.

All in all, a good way to end a beautiful weekend in the bay area. The spa was nice and relaxing (albeit a bit more expensive than I’m used to but a very nice atmosphere) and a good time catching up with girlfriends. Simon and Ron had an eventful day with visiting with family and both should rest well tonight.

Puppy Pals

Day 46

Simon slept this morning with his puppy pal playmate.  My co-worker Monica bought this for him when she visited last weekend.  It’s soft and cozy so a comfortable place for him to sleep.

This beautiful Saturday afternoon we decided to drive down to Pacifica to have some ribs at Gorilla BBQ.  On our first visit, we showed up too late and they sold out of ribs.  They open at 12pm and close when there’s no more food.  So today we got there around 12:15pm and were able to score ourselves a rack of pork ribs.  Yum yum, look at that nice smoky bark on the outside.

As I mentioned before, Simon is smiling a lot more now and we’ve been trying to capture some of his different smiles on camera.  So adorable!

More puppy pals.  Carter’s has a cute line of puppy clothes and we’ve gotten quite a few different outfits.  Here’s one of the tops which Ron says reminds him of a kung fu shirt.  It has cute pants to go along with it but we didn’t bother with putting them on since we were just at home.

This is Simon sleeping… with his left hand in the air.  “Teacher, teacher, I have a question!”  A good sign?

Self Awareness

Day 45

While I was sleeping, Simon was awake at 4am with Ron.  Since Simon did not want to go back to sleep, Ron entertained Simon in front of our full length mirror.  It seems as Simon is becoming more self aware as he sometimes will smile and coo when he locks eyes with himself in the mirror or when seeing us in the mirror with him.

I’ve realized that Simon looks really cute wearing pants.  Too bad they’re such a pain when you have to do such frequent diaper changes.  This robot outfit is really one of my favorites and he’s already growing out the shirt but the pants are kind of long.  It makes me wonder if Simon has short legs with a long torso… or else these pants just weren’t designed correctly for a diaper.

Simon has been doing a lot better with tummy time and is able to hold his head up a bit longer.  Today we tried using my Brest Friend for Simon’s tummy time.

He was pretty good at it except that he was using his legs to kick and was almost toppling over the front so we had to watch him closely.  After a while he was exhausted!

So then it was nap time.   Simon sometimes will only fall sleep when being held so this is simulating our arms around him.  Nice and cozy (although Uncle Henry says it looks like a toilet bowl).

It’s been interesting to see Simon actually making eye contact with us now.  Plus he’s cooing at us and starting to smile more.  His smile is so sweet but we still haven’t figured out what we have to do to make him smile, it seems really random… but at least he is smiling so I hope he is a happy baby.
