@ Spot Lounge once again

We seem to be frequenting this place quite a lot… I guess we just have to finish introducing our friends to the yummy soju cocktails then we’ll stop going there as often… although the yogurt mix wasn’t very good this time around. Very sweet and a bit too thick.

We ordered something new this time around, a sort of stew with beef, tofu, ramen, rice cakes, and spicy broth. If you want it really spicy you have to ask for it or else it comes out kind of bland.

We also tried the seafood pancake but it wasn’t as good as the one we had down the street at Shin Toe Bul Yi.

The stew is something pretty easy to make at home as long as you have some sort of crock pot, electric wok, hot pot, etc. The broth can be bought and you can buy spices and all the ingredients you want.

Shin Toe Bul Yi

Our friends K&J are back from their around-the-world tour and have moved back to SF. We went out for dinner at Shin Toe Bul Yi. I’ve heard good things about the restaurant so it seemed like a good time to try it.

My favorite item of the night was the green onion pancake. Ron says it tasted good because it had lots of egg. All I know was that it was yummy.

We also had steaming bowls of seafood tofu soup and beef tofu soup. They also have the rice sticks with spicy sauce. The tofu soups weren’t spicy enough for us. They had plenty of yummy side dishes.

We barbequed at our table on a gas powered grills. We had the pork belly and the beef. The beef was different than we expected, it was like a pieces of a thick steak sliced rather than the thinly sliced bulgolgi.

We had a nice chat about some of our adventures over the past year. I’m glad they’ve come back and am looking forward to their wedding 🙂

Macy’s SPCA window and ZaZang Noodles

This morning we went to the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market to pick up some delicious fruits and have a light lunch and afterwards while Ron went to do some work, I walked over to Union Square to check out Macy’s annual SF SPCA display. There were only six windows with the kittens and puppies, I wish there were more.

My favorite was this white kitten taking a nap on the little padded park bench.

Most of the kitties were napping, probably tired out from playing.
These two kitties blended in with the carpet, I almost didn’t see them!

These siblings got a little playful after their short nap but they looked so cute snuggling up to each other.

This orange and white kitty slept through all the gawkers, so sound asleep and relaxed. A very pretty kitty.

There was only one puppy. He or she was clawing against the door behind because he or she really wanted to get out of there. Apparently his or her sibling was already adopted earlier in the day.

I love baby animals. So sweet and innocent and very playful.

After a few hours of fawning over the babies, we met up with friends to have some drinks at 21st Amendment where we had a Pomegranate brew, yummy. We then went to our friend’s apartment and tried this fabulous sparkling wine called La Caudrina La Selvatica. It’s very sweet, good for dessert.

We ended the night with dinner at ZaZang Korean Noodle which we’ve been to before, great za zang noodles. We decided to try the deep fried beef with sweet and sour sauce.

Quite sour and almost couldn’t tell it was beef but a very good portion and not bad.

A lot of walking today though, very tired. Only one more day to the weekend then time to start a VERY busy work week…

The Spot Lounge

We had dinner at Spot Lounge tonight. We’ve been wanting to go back to try their food ever since we went there for their yummy soju cocktails.

We ordered the rice cakes with ramen in spicy sauce. The sauce was sweet and spicy. Strangely, the dish tasted better once it cooled down.

This is their chicken wings with special sauce. Nice and crispy but maybe not enough sauce.

Kimchi tofu soup. A bit sour for my taste.

Their side dishes. My favorite was the pickled preserved vegetables.

The fried prawns served with thousand island dressing.

The kalbi. The meat was a bit fatty and the sauce was very sweet.

The bulgolgi also had a very sweet sauce.

There were five of us and this was a lot of food. We rolled out of there and have enough leftovers for one more meal for two.

I’d recommend this place if you want to enjoy good soju cocktails with your meal. Plus keep an eye out for their specials, like tonight we got 25% off all our appetizers. They have college night, $3 draft beer nights, and more.

Korean Dinner and Rock Band 2

Our friend Susan invited us over for a homemade Korean dinner. She’s been so busy with work and school that we hardly see her so she wanted to have dinner and hang out. She picked up all the ingredients from a Korean supermarket in Daly City, I’m assuming it’s Kukje Super Market on Junipero Serra Blvd. She made us duk bok ki (the Korean rice cake stir fried with kimchi, pork, fish cake, and spicy sauce.) For appetizers we had edamame and kim bap (Korean sushi, sesame oil instead of rice wine in the rice). Both were pretty good.

We also had kalbi and bulgolgi, both premarinated from the supermarket. The kalbi (ribs) were really good but the bulgolgi (marinated thinly sliced beef) ended up being too tough, all the meat juices oozed off the broiling pan and pooled at the bottom so the meat got really dry.

Susan’s fiance Ken brought over his Playstation and a game called Rock Band 2. They were already playing before dinner and couldn’t want to play some more after dinner.

At first, I was a little bit afraid to play it but after a while it got quite fun. The game has four instruments, the drums, guitar, bass guitar, and a vocalist. I tried the drums which were really hard considering there are four drums plus a foot petal and the guitar was even harder with many buttons and sticks to press… I’m not very coordinated! So I stuck with singing and if you know me, this is a big feat for me. The game only listens to pitch so you could be saying as much nonsense as you want or just keep on saying “la la la laaa” depending on the length of each tone. Sometimes the words would be going by so fast that I couldn’t catch up so just said “blahblah blaaah blah” etc. Quite hilarious I must say. Ron had a good time with the drums, it makes you feel like you’re a real drummer although you’re probably really hitting a lot of nonsense.

Susan’s sister Sally’s stage name was “Salicious”.

My stage name was “Juicy”.

It was a good way to burn some calories as the drums and guitar require a lot of movement and you’re also very tense when playing because you want to hit each note just right. With the singing, I just had a really dry throat and exercising my diaphragm with the long notes.

I think Ron is considering getting the game for our Wii… except then we’d need to buy all the accessories… yikes!
